2023.05.29 17:28 FrankBeamer_ [Spoilers] This was the most predictable and on-brand ending possible that stays true to who the characters are

I've been seeing a few posts by people angry about Kendall never becoming CEO and having the rug pulled from him last second again.
But this ending is the most true to the character's personalities, and is nothing we haven't seen before in the show.
The siblings have self destructed and lost almost everytime they've been faced with a critical decision throughout the series:
Roman buckling under his father during Ken's vote of no confidence
Kendall going on a bender the night before ousting his dad and killing a kid
Shiv underestimating Tom and fucking the siblings last second
etc etc
It's a running theme of the show. To have Kendall 'win' and get the CEO position would've been the 'shock' ending for me. Although I feel the episode could've benefited from another conversation between Tom and Shiv prior to the vote to fully flesh out Shiv's change of heart, it is clear that Kendall cemented how unfit he was for the job when he self destructed yet again in the conference room in front of his siblings, to the point of becoming physical. I genuinely feel Shiv hadn't made up her mind when she walked out, yet Ken went in all guns blazing assuming she would've voted against him, thus cementing his fate.
For better or worse, the writers have used the 'siblings get fucked last minute' trope multiple times this series. To have anything else happen at the end would've been a departure from the norm and from the central idea behind the characters. Which is why I personally feel this is the most predictable ending that stays the most true to who the characters really are - bullshit, not serious people.

2023.05.29 17:15 Dewgong444 The Khornumverate (3 Khorne LoW Demon Engines) returns from BAO with their Primarch

As we near the end of 9th edition, which will certainly go down as one of the editions of all time, I figured it'd be best to go out with a bang. To roll out the big guns. To really bring the biggest (and therefore best) models I have to the table. So I made a Word Bearers list with all 3 Khorne LoW Demon Engines, and showed it to my team. One of whom asked me if Angron would fit if it were World Eaters. I was obliged to answer yes, as there is technically a legal list there. So I made it. I told my teammate it might be the most ridiculous list I ever made. The team then strong-armed (slightly suggested) me into taking it to BAO. So let's actually see what we got going on here.
World Eaters Arks of Omen Detachment:
That there ladies and gentlemen, is 1 giant amount of 2k points. 4 LoWs, 84W at T8 5++, generating 16 total BTP possible. It is .... legally a list. So that's what we took to BAO. This amalgam of trying to get the least amount of drops possible I suppose. But we're not here to critique lists, we're here to talk about how BAO went. Once again my memory is a mess after a major and I forgot to take pictures to remind myself of how the games went so I apologize in advance for any mistakes and the TL;DR format.
Regarding deployment/reserves, every game had everyone on the board except the berzerkers which went into strategic reserves.
Round 1: Mission - 12 Tear Down Their Icons
Opponent: Dark Eldar w/10-man Court, Djin Blade Archon, Drazhar, 6 MSU kabalites kitted, 13 incubi in 3 units, 5 mandrakes, 2x3 Reavers, 3 raiders, 3 venoms, 2x5 wracks, Precision Blows Succubus
TL;DR: I went first and did some nice plink shooting, while return fire left Angron on 3. We popped some transports on 2, and in return Angron went down while the LoS got dropped to 1. Berzerkers take Drazhar out, most incubi go down to shooting, and the LoS is able to take out the succubus. Some back and forth trading ends with me edging my opponent out on primary, with both of us on fumes at the end.
Result: 81-55 Win for the WE
Round 2: Mission - 22 Conversion
Opponent: World Eaters w/ Invocatus WL, 2x Demon Princes, 10 jackals, 3x5 zerkers w/ Icon + Evi, 3x5 Eightbound, 2x3 Exalted Eightbound, 1x3 + 2x1 spawn, Rhino
TL;DR: I went first but most of my opponent stuff was in reserve or behind a wall, so I was able to pop a rhino and set myself up with the scorpion and LoS protecting Angron while the Kytan runs around my right. He does HI into the scorpion with 5 eightbound and loses 3 to do about half to it. The scorpion will barely hold out next turn when a demon prince joins the party. My LoS helps to hold down the middle while Angron waits to get involved and the Kytan holds run down my right to contest a mid objective. His reserves come in and do work, ripping my off my home and left objective. I will never regain my home objective, but Angron will hold down that left objective against 5 eightbound and 3 exalted eightbound. The LoS will hold down the center while the berzerkers and kytan will eventually make it to his backfield. An unfortunately low score on Bring It Down and Banners will bring my opponent down just below my own score.
Result: 85 -77 Win for the Primarch
Round 3: Mission - 23 Scouring
Opponent: Iron Hands (base) w/ Feirros, Primaris Libby, 3x10 Heavy Intercessors w/ Executors, 5 infiltrators, Character Contemptor w/volkite, Primaris Apothecary, 4 servitors, 6 TH/SS Termies, 6+5 Eradicators w/ Heavy Melta
TL;DR: Turns out a lot of D2 with rerolls hurts. Like a lot. I was just far enough back to not get eradicator'd T1, and some unfortunately aggressive infiltrators provide Angron and his 'No Fall Backsies' a route into 5 eradicators. Angron will be there, killing gravis marines, for THREE ROUNDS as more meat gets sent into the grinder with a 5++, 5+++. Meanwhile my scorpion gets blanked on T2 and my Kytan also falls that turn. A failed berzerker charge into the other eradicators puts me on the back foot, but my salvation arrives when his terminators fail their 4" counter-charge the next turn. The LoS get dropped low, but is able to stick around just long enough to be a massive annoyance. My berzerkers will help tip primary by living the rest of the game on my opponent's right objective. And once again winning primary tips the score in my favor.
Result: 96-68 victory for Angery Ron
Round 4: Mission - 31 Tide of Conviction
Opponent: Word Bearers w/ Ghollax Prince, Master of Possession, Dark Apostle, 2x8 Accursed Cultists, 1x10 melee cultists, Master of Executions, 2x10 Plague Marines w/ everything, 10 Possessed w/ Black Rune, 5 Possessed, 2x1 Venomcrawler, 2 Worthy Offering Brigands
TL;DR: My opponent went first and was able to position well, but only got 5 damage on the LoS with the brigands as they rolled 3 1s on the melta guns round 1. This will be a game-long theme, as none of my LoWs will take melta wounds at any point (except 2 bubonic axes on the scorpion in 4). I get forward to set up early, but the kytan gets ripped apart by 7 possessed with full wound rerolls. Angron and the scorpion will get into them, taking them down to 3 but also removing some accursed cultists while the LoS does its best to drive down the middle. Some berzerkers hold down my right long enough to fend off my opponent. He's able to get his reserved accursed cultists back into my home objective on 4 while the Scorpion eventually fell to plague marines and a Master of Execution doing 12 damage to it and I legitimately though I'd lost the game (sorry my opponent). However, a resurrected Angron made his charge and was able to swap it back to me. Angron was able to hold down my territory on 4 and 5 while the Lord of Skulls and lone spawn take 2 different objectives from my opponent, resulting in a primary score different of 18-4 in Round 5, a 14-point swing entirely dependent on who went 2nd (which is why I do not like this mission). That swing helps propel Angron to a win.
Result: 76-61 victory for best Traitors
(INTERMISSION) I'm in third place after 4 rounds which is quite fun. If you'd like to get off Angron's Wild Ride now and sleep contentedly in my definitely-3rd-place-finish, no one will begrudge you. Live in that dream world.
Round 5: Mission - 32 Death and Zeal
Opponent: Whirlwind Space Wolves w/ Guilliman, Primaris Chappy, 3x10 Wulfen, 2x1 Cyberwolves, 16 total skyclaws w/ the fixings, 10 Desolators I bitched too much about sorry Round 5 opponent
TL;DR: Wulfen hurt real bad and GW's baffling design space where anti-LoS AND double shooting should be nerfed to hell except for 1 datasheet which does both well lead to my demise. In all seriousness, I did get a little overly frisky with the wulfen who promptly ripped Angron limb from limb, and I did get out-maneuvered early on which led to me taking increasingly larger and larger risks as the game got progressively further away from me and my opponent played his role extremely well. Angron and the Kytan went down in 1, Scorpion in 2, LoS in 4, and my opponent lost everything but 9 wulfen and a cyberwolf, but all I had was Angron and 1 berzerker. He was able to just stretch me out and out-primary me by a lot (45-11) leading to my first loss.
Result: 53 - 84 loss to worst Primarch who avenges Nuceria
Round 6: Mission - 33 Secure Missing Artifacts
Opponent: Tau Sept w/ Longstrike, Coldstar, Ethereal, 10 breachers, 10 karnivores, 10 man Strike team, 2x4 Kroot Hounds, Kroot Shaper, Ghostkeel, Riptide, 10man Pathfinder, Piranha, 5 vespid, Sun Shark Bomber, Devilfish, Tidewall Gunrig
TL;DR: The Longstrike goes 'LMAO'. I did get first which was nice, but there was nothing to do other than position well. My opponent was great, played pretty much perfectly (except 1 tiny mistake which didn't end up mattering), and spiked some insane rolls on Longstrike which at that point were more humorous than annoying as the game was well out of hand by then. I'd been dodging the matchup all event, and it was time that fate finally caught up with me. If people want me to give more details on how this went turn-by-turn I can, but I think we all know how this'll turn out.
Result: 45 - 97 predictable (yet fun) result
That's it, I've once again 4-2 in a major for the 4th time IN A ROW (2022 LVO, BAO, SoCal, 2023 BAO), which is nice to get 4 wins but annoying I seemingly can't break through the meta ceiling. I did end up in 18th which is nice (and I was in 3rd at the end of Round 4), but I won't lie, a small part of me really wanted to go 5-1 to mess with Goonhammer's heads when they do their meta review.

Guns Not Spawning In Cherbourg
I reached the limit on photos to show, so there’s like 20 more, but here the first 20. So guns aren’t spawning in Cherbourg, I tried disabling Brita but that didn’t work. Anyone know if it’s just Cherbourg or if I have a mod incompatibility? I’ve been spawning on the top left island and been using that gun store as a basis, so it might just be an ammo store, but I doubt it.

2023.05.29 17:00 Akitra_Inc What Should You Know About ISO 27001 Internal and External Audits?

What Should You Know About ISO 27001 Internal and External Audits?
The ISO 27001 compliance framework is one of the most well-established data security standards worldwide. To maintain growth, SaaS companies must promote trust and confidence amongst their customers about their ability to secure and manage data.
Getting accredited by the International Organization for Standardization and its compliance protocols (for instance, ISO 27001) is one of the best approaches to demonstrate their credibility. It can help these businesses foster long-lasting relationships with clients, leading to an unimpeachable reputation and an ever-increasing growth in business revenue.
ISO 27001 works with an ISMS (Information Security Management System), which requires frequent audits to ensure that the data infrastructure is functioning optimally. An ISO 27001 audit ensures that your company’s security systems adhere to the standard’s requirements and your organization’s business objectives.
But what are an ISO 27001 audit’s requirements? What do auditors essentially look for? If you are considering compliance with ISO 27001 framework, you must know what it takes to be audit-ready. But be calm if you are not. In this blog, we will discuss everything you need to know about ISO 27001 audits, including why they are important, their frequency, who can make an ISMS audit, and the exact steps involved in a successful audit.

What is an ISO 27001 Audit?

An ISO 27001 audit is an assessment of your data systems, where a qualified and unbiased auditor looks at the three criteria outlined below to draw up a report that details how your organization is faring in its data security measures and which areas can be improved upon —
  • the ISMS or components of it being tested to see if they comply with the requirements of the standard;
  • the organization’s own information needs and goals for their ISMS; and,
  • the usefulness and efficiency of the controls, procedures, and other measures involved.
As the ISO 27001 compliance standard was created to help an organization reduce its information security risks to a manageable level, it is necessary to verify that the implemented controls do, in fact, decrease risks to a point where the risk owner(s) are satisfied and capable of tolerating the residual risk, in addition to the overall compliance and effectiveness of the ISMS.

What are the Different Types of ISO 27001 Audits?

There are two types of ISO 27001 audits—internal and external.
  • Internal audits are the ones that are conducted using the organization’s resources. A hired supplier can perform these audits if the company needs more skilled and impartial auditors on staff. These are frequently called “second-party audits” because the supplier serves as an “internal resource.”
  • External audits are the ones that are most frequently conducted by a certifying organization to get or maintain. To get their assurance of the organization’s ISMS, other interested parties (such as partners or customers) may conduct their audits, which are also included in this definition of the term. This is particularly valid when the needs of such a customer or vendor party go above and beyond the norm.

Why are ISO 27001 Audits Important?

Both internal and external audits pertaining to the ISO 27001 compliance standard are important.
External auditors independently validate your security posture During the external audit. An auditor may provide a knowledgeable and more unbiased view of existing security policies and controls and smart suggestions for further enhancing your overall security posture. Certification audits are particularly crucial since they demonstrate your dedication to security. A well-regarded third-party certification, such as ISO 27001, can provide a significant competitive edge. Additionally, it can shorten the sales cycle and let you quickly advance your business growth.
On the other hand, Clause 9.2 of the ISO 27001 standard requires an internal audit program to demonstrate that an ISMS is compliant and operating efficiently. In addition to being necessary, they also provide businesses with several advantages, such as identifying non-conformities and fixing them before a certifying authority does.
Additional advantages of both internal and external ISO 27001 audits may include the following:
  • It assures that your ISMS is properly implemented and complies with the ISO 27001 standard.
  • It gives you certified confirmation that your ISMS successfully lowers information security threats.
  • An audit also provides a comprehensive understanding of how non-conformities are promptly fixed.
  • It assures that all information security issues, occurrences, and incidents are thoroughly documented so that updates and adjustments can be made seamlessly to reinforce the ISMS.
  • It also guarantees your organization’s dedication to ongoing progress in security matters.

How Frequently Should You Conduct an ISO 27001 Audit?

To help ensure that controls are closely monitored over the long term and your ISMS is always improving, ISO 27001 compliance calls for an internal audit once every 12 months. Customers will find it much easier to trust you with their information and business.
For external audits, your organization undergoes a certification audit right at the beginning when your certificate is awarded to you upon passing the audit. Your company must undergo surveillance audits in the first and second years following your certification audit to receive your certification. Lastly, you will need a re-certification audit once every three years.

Who Does an ISMS Audit?

Your organization will need a certifying body to carry out external audits.
Meanwhile, internal audits can be performed within the organization by hiring a third party that is independent and skilled enough to handle it; as long as they are unbiased and are not auditing functions or processes that they supervise or helped build, this party may be an internal or external resource. If you need someone in your organization to meet these requirements, you must hire an outside auditor to assist you in conducting an internal audit.
In this next section, we will outline five simple steps you can out to use to conduct an ISO 27001 internal audit.

Five Steps to Conduct an ISO 27001 Internal Audit

Internal audits are generally customizable to suit the particular organization’s needs and objectives, but here are five core steps to help you get started:
  1. Reviewing documents
The documentation of how the ISMS was generated should be reviewed by your designated auditor, whether internal or external. Since it is what the internal audit entails, this will assist in aligning the scope of the internal audit with the ISMS.
The key people in charge of the ISMS’s processes and controls should also be named in the documentation. This step is very helpful, especially when the auditor has to ask for more information about the intricacies of the ISMS.
  1. Preparing for the assessment
The auditor(s), with help from the management, should develop a thorough ISO 27001 internal audit checklist of what has to be done during this phase. The time frame and the resources required to finish the audit should be considered.
  1. Gathering evidence
This audit activity actively samples data to demonstrate that policies are being followed, procedures and standards are being adhered to, and guidance is being considered.
  1. Analyzing data
The audit evidence needs to be organized, filed, and examined in light of the risks and control goals established by your organization and the ISO 27001 standard.
The evidence must be organized and checked against the ISO 27001 standard after gathering it. This procedure might show where further audit tests are needed and highlight evidence-gathering shortcomings.
  1. Reporting to management
Once the fieldwork testing and analysis are finished, your audit team will present management with a report. Results should be kept on file as a performance history and evidence that your business complies with the standard’s ISMS requirements. This report mostly includes:
  • An introduction that details the purpose, goals, schedule, and summation of the work completed;
  • The key findings, a synopsis of the analysis, and a conclusion;
  • Results and analysis in detail; and,
  • An explanation of the suggestions and scope restrictions from the auditor(s).
From there, it is the responsibility of the management to monitor the rectification of non-conformities discovered during the audit after receiving the report.

2023.05.29 16:57 StaticNocturne Why some guys find it so much easier than others (it's not just looks)

Brothers are out here are trying to crack the fucking Da Vinci code to win the affection of womenfolk, meanwhile other brothers are naturally attracting ladies by being unapologetically themselves.
Case in point: I know a knuckledragger who has little emotional intelligence or self-awareness (or at least he doesn't show it) and a dimwitted demeanor akin to James Franco in the Pineapple express. He's got a stable but low paying and unglamorous job, and he's a bit above average in the looks department but not nearly handsome enough to counteract the aforementioned issues... only they rarely prove to be issues since he seems to be able to attract casual partners and longer term partners much more easily than some of us would assume based on complex calculations using the Fibonacci sequence and Hipparchus' star charts and whatnot.
Anyhow, as far as I can tell there's no sorcery at work, the fact is he's just being himself - or more accurately the character mold of what I would call your average blue collar sports fan in the city I live in. He essentially says and does what he wants when he wants, doesn't seem to have any grand plan, and I would eat my shoe if I were to learn that he had ever looked for advice on a dating forum or referred to a guide of some sort.
There's some definite je ne sais quoi to be felt whenever anyone is being unapologetically themselves - even if it isn't exactly appreciated and even if there isn't any real wit or charm to them. Conversely it's difficult to be truly charismatic when one is attempting to play a game of sorts, it's usually perceptible, and is partly what people refer to casually when they say 'the vibe was off'.
An obvious yet crucial point to bear in mind is that some men simply have personalities which are naturally aligned with that which a large portion of women are drawn toward - even if it includes some less politically or socially acceptable elements and even if they'd be loathe to admit or perhaps even unable to consciously rationalize their attraction.
Some guys - many guys - are quite effortlessly drawing women in by being brash and assertive, lustful and a bit vulgar, by engaging with their manly sports and hobbies, getting inked and shaving their head and so on - It wouldn't be quite right to say it all comes naturally because it's socially conditioned, but it doesn't involve painstaking strategizing and planning when it comes to courtship, and I think that has an enormous impact both in rendering them more charismatic and in helping them to avoid a lot of the burnout that comes with the more calculated approach.
Of course this personality profile is going to absolutely repel certain types of women, just as a meek and geeky personality will repel certain types of women (perhaps not as viscerally but it will dry them up like the Atacama) but in general, if a guy isn't equipped with many of the traditional / prototypical male traits and behaviors, even the arguably cunty ones, they're effectively playing the game on a harder difficulty.
So, what's to make of all this?
I suppose it supports the view that we'd be better off sticking to our guns and accepting that we won't find appeal with most women, just as we aren't attracted to the majority of women we cross paths with.
It's possible to fake it and make it - I have a close friend who did exactly this with a lady with whom he was (as much as I revile the idea of dating tiers) punching well above his weight... in fact he lied about a range of things relating to his lifestyle and work to try and position himself in the most flattering light, as he knew her preferred type. They dated, he got crushed by the guilt and burden of keeping up the charade, came clean, they very nearly parted ways but ultimately remained together. Seems like a lot more trouble than its worth, not to mention it's pathetic, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't lose a bit of respect for him.
Most likely the optimal strategy is to identify and remedy a few pain points that are likely to be posing the biggest blockades to connecting with women - in my case this involves things such as oversharing personal information too soon (including mental health struggles) and hesitation around physical escalating (it doesn't come naturally so I need to consciously remind myself to be more touchy) - being the most appealing version of yourself, not acting like somebody else.
I was going to delete this after realizing it's all so obvious, but it's written now so I'm posting it

[I Accidentally Joined The Mafia In South Brooklyn] Chapter 6: On The Organizational Habits of Unrested Spirits and The Taste of Demon's Blood, Part 1.

Becca invited me to her apartment when we made it back, sent me through the alley behind the building to keep the prying eyes at the minimum. That was fine with me as I was a lot more noticeable than I liked to be, at the moment. I had already lit a cigarette by the time she opened the back door of the stairwell to let me in. It was the last in the pack, and I'd only opened it this morning. The temperature on my phone screen had finally hit zero.
"You're gonna have to give me a second, B, I don't wanna smoke around you in your condition but I really need one."
She gave me another watery grin.
"Little too much blood in the nicotine system, huh?"
"Exactly, my young friend, exactly that."
She propped the door open and sat herself down on the ground. I could tell the high heels were starting to hurt her because she kicked them off and set them neatly to the side, though I knew the concrete had to be freezing her feet off. She tucked her skirt between her legs and sat with her back against the wall, her elbow propped on her bent knee, the other leg stretched out straight before her. It was exactly how what was left of Antoni had been sitting beside me less than two hours ago.
I was getting a little tired of all the patterns appearing in my life these days.
I flipped to my news app, as was my habit. There was an article at the top of page about the preparations the SDNY were making to get ready for the coming storm, but frankly I didn't really give a fuck so I just kept scrolling.
"Your old neighborhood is in the news, B."
"You ain't had enough bad news?" Beccs asked with a rueful laugh.
"Eh, I like to stay abreast of current events. I mean, you got me pegged, B. I'm a nosy fuck. But, uh, fifteen years on the inside, you learn that it pays to pay attention to the shit other people don't notice, cause you never know when the information you pick up is going to end up being the information you need."
She gave me a look that said she had to yield to my point.
"So what's the news from Koreatown?".
"Somebody shot a wedding up, apparently. Says seven were killed, including the bride and groom and the bride's father, as they was leaving the reception. You know, most of these names are Rhees. Ain't nobody you know, is it? Kinda feel like you've had enough death for the day, kid."
There was another look on her face, one I couldn't quite read even with all my people-watching prowess.
"Lemme take a wild stab at it. Two of those names are Rhee Seong-Min and Rhee Bong-Cha."
"Yeah," I nodded. "You do know 'em. I'm sorry, B."
She gave a low, almost rumbling, chuckle. It gave me a little shiver, not from the cold, and not one of enjoyment, either. She flashed a sign, one I'd seen her flash before, but it wasn't from any gang I knew personally, and lacking any official affiliation of my own, I'd dealt with my fair share of different gang members in the Upstate Correctional Facility. Double E's, one backwards, one forwards, three quick shakes of each hand.
"God bless old K-town. But you ain't got to worry about it. I'll not shed a tear over any of them. They's family, but they ain't exactly family, you know. I might tell you about it one day."
The last sentence had a note of finality to it, so I didn't ask any further questions in that regard, but I was still as curious as always.
"If all your family has Korean names, how the hell did you end up as Rebecca and your Dad as Sam?"
"My Dad's name is Park Kyung-Sam. Just Sam was easier to tell people and he, uh, he wanted me to have the same benefit of blending in in American society, and he liked the name Rebecca. So, Rhee Rebecca Hyo-Jin. My Mom's name was Rhee Chung-Cha, but everybody just called her ChaCha, like from Grease."
"So your Mom was the Rhee?"
She made an affirmative noise and nodded.
"She didn't exactly wanna give up her family name, and… my Dad didn't exactly give a fuck cause he was in love with her crazy ass. You know, that's where I get this from. Except my Moms, if she was still around she'd make me look like I grew up to be a calm, quiet girl."
I'd hate to see what was worse than Beccs.
"You done?" Becca asked. I nodded, tossed my cigarette into the sand-filled bucket we kept here for just that purpose. I followed B inside and we climbed the stairs to the third floor. I leaned against the wall as she pulled a ring of keys from her coat pocket and waited while she unlocked the knob and the three deadbolts on her door.
"Pretty serious about your home security, B?"
She shot me a look but didn't say anything as she opened the door. A steady beeping greeted us, and Becca stopped just inside and punched in a code on a security panel. As I stepped around her and entered the apartment, I understood why.
Do you know that part in Coming To America where Akeem comes home to his dilapidated Queens apartment and realizes Semmi has filled it with expensive furniture? Well, it was exactly like that. Becca locked the door back behind her, threw her stilettos onto the shoe rack, and hung her coat on the brass tree beside it. I did the same, removed my boots to place them on the rack as well.
"Jesus Christ, B, this place looks amazing."
There was a gray suede sectional in the center of the living room, a 152 inch Panasonic plasma bolted to the wall. The coffee table, the wool Oriental rug beneath it, and the end tables looked antique, as well as the green velvet chaise set near one window. There were three ornately-carved bookcases set against the far wall between the two windows facing the street, one filled with DVDs, and on the other two almost all the books were old and leather bound. The kitchen was open to the room, separated by a butcher block bar from the living room, all matching stainless steel appliances and black marble countertops. All along the walls were family pictures dotted between massive paintings held in golden Baroque style frames.
They were… stunning was the only word I could think to describe them. Most of them were portraits done in a slightly impressionist style, impasto if my memory served me, seemingly random strokes of thick paint that somehow managed to form the perfect images of faces and a few nudes.
"Jesus Christ, these paintings must have cost a fortune alone."
Becca stepped beside me, her arms crossed over her chest as she surveyed the painting I was looking at. It was done in mostly black and red, the image of a sleeping nude man, one arm tucked behind his head, his other draped across his stomach, his hips and legs covered with a sheet. If I touched it, I could have felt the wrinkles in the bunched fabric. There was something oddly familiar about it.
"They didn't cost shit," she answered.
That made me look away from the painting and back to Beccs.
"What the hell? Did you rob a gallery?"
"No, you mook, I painted them. They didn't cost anything but the price of the canvas and the paint, which, you know, I stole most of that from school."
"You painted them," I repeated, looking back.
As I looked closer at the canvas, I realized why it was familiar. The sleeping man was our dear friend Antoni Zabrowska. I had mistaken his tattoos for shadows, though I had to admit I had never seen him look quite so relaxed. As I glanced around the room, I realized I recognized many of the paintings. I was able to pick out her father's face, Rossi's, and I realized the model for the two female nudes was none other than Nia Bianchi. There was one of a woman in white with bloody skeletal wings that bore a strong resemblance to Becca and I imagined that was the infamous ChaCha.
"That's what I go to Columbia for. Visual Arts."
"You're a goddamn genius, B."
She scoffed.
"No, I'm fucking serious, kid. My sister collects art, and she refuses to go for the big names. Shit like this, she pays 10 to 20 grand for a painting half this size, more if it's one of the artists she likes."
Now she snorted.
"What? Your sister got a money tree?"
"No, my older sister Aurie's a writer. She wrote her first book when she was ten. She's published 20 so far, but she's got 30 or 40 more in backlog that she's still tweaking. She's kind of a perfectionist when it comes to writing, but I guess it pays off. Her books sell like fucking hotcakes everytime she puts one out, two of her series got picked up by Netflix, and Lion's Gate turned her seventh book into a movie. She even got to be involved in the productions.
"She's got a penthouse on the Upper East Side that she bought about six years ago. That's where I lived when I got out of the Upstate. Aurora, she's a fucking Saint, you know. I mean, I had a shitty PO that was up my ass every five minutes but Aurie never said a word about it. She just… always told me she was glad I was home, which, you know, was nice to hear considering that according to my grandparents I died 19 years ago. She was the one that helped me get this place down here, paid in full for a two year lease."
Becca raised an eyebrow at me.
"No offense, Tony, I can tell you're crazy about her, but she couldn't have picked a better place for you than this hell hole?"
I laughed as softly as I could, to save the muscles in my stomach.
"I picked this place myself, B. Cheapest apartment I could find in any of the boroughs, and it even had three bedrooms. I was thinking about having space for a library and a home gym."
Becca snorted.
"Yeah, it's cheap cause the fucking place is about 90 years old. Nobody's been able to get a hold of the slumlord who owns it for repairs in 8 months, but I bet you the motherfucker still collects the rent checks we deposit in his fucking bank account every month."
"Yeah, I figured that out just about as soon as I moved in, but beggars can't be choosers. Besides, Antoni always used to help me out whenever something broke."
Becca gave a small smile.
"They did that for everybody. I used to call them the apartment elves, cause instead of making shoes they were skittering around fixing fucking toilets and sinks, and rewiring burned up outlets and bringing in new refrigerators and stoves when shit broke in everybody else's places. And they bought it all with their own money. Everybody tried to pay them, but they never took a dime for any of it. Ironically enough, Pops used to talk about Antoni all the time because of all the money he'd spend over there every week. Said he had a good heart, just no good sense when it came to what was his responsibility and wasn't. You know, I had my own opinions about Antoni's heart, but I kept them to myself."
"I really wish I had paid more attention when Antoni was working on the boiler, though. Instead of just passing him tools and running my mouth."
"Yeah, you're good at that," she replied with a smirk.
"And fuck you, too, Miss Rebecca. You might be the strong type, but you're not exactly silent yourself."
She laughed.
"Make yourself comfortable. I'll be right back."
I nodded and obeyed as she exited into what I saw was the bathroom as she opened the door and closed it behind her.
The sectional was goddamned heaven, and she'd said make myself comfortable so I kicked out the recliner and leaned back. I closed my eyes for a moment and sighed, and when I opened them I nearly jumped out of my skin. I barely managed to stop myself from letting out a yell as I jerked back up to sitting.
Antoni's corpse was standing by the picture wall, looking intently at a photo of a child Becca wearing a ruffled, cream colored dress with a ribbon in her long black hair. It was the picture of her first Communion.
"Goddamn, you can't give somebody a warning before you do that?"
He neither answered me nor turned to look at me because he was using the stumps of his wrists to adjust several of the frames back straight again.
"Fucking neat freak," I laughed. "She wasn't lying."
He finally turned toward me.
You ever seen a corpse try to look annoyed when he's missing about a quarter of his face? I mean, what am I saying, you probably haven't, but suffice to say, it's pretty fucking funny. He raised his left wrist, and if he had hands, he'dve been shooting the bird.
Almost hysterical laughter burst out of me as Becca exited the bathroom.
"Least the pipes ain't frozen yet," she muttered.
She gave me a strange look.
"Who are you talking to out here? And what's so funny?"
I glanced back to Antoni, but he was gone again.
"Don't mind me, B, I'm pretty sure I got a concussion. I'm pretty much seeing pink elephants at this point." Or, you know, the mutilated corpse of my best friend, but it's probably best I leave it at elephants.
"Yeah," she answered, and crossed the room to hand me something. "Speaking of."
It was a mouth guard.
"What is this for?"
She didn't answer me, but headed to the kitchen and opened a cabinet, withdrawing a cut crystal scotch glass and then opening the refrigerator and withdrawing… two bags of blood. Nia's blood, to be exact. She unscrewed the cap at the bottom of one, punctured the seal with a fresh insulin needle, and to my supreme discomfort squeezed some into the glass. The mouth guard suddenly made sense. It was so I wouldn't break my teeth or bite my tongue off when the convulsions started and my jaw locked down from consuming demon blood.
"Oh no, B, I don't want that."
"Yeah. That's why I didn't tell you why I wanted you over here, cause I knew you was gonna be a pussy about it."
I tried one more last-ditch effort.
"You need that more than me, B."
"I can just take my next dose early, but you, you can't go down and see Ma looking like that. She's gonna ask too many questions."
That one stopped me.
"I've had enough of interrogations for one day, B."
"There ain't no interrogation when it comes to Ma. She just puts it in your head that you ain't got no choice but to tell her the truth, and you do. She's made state witnesses get up on the stand and confess their own crimes, pleading the fifth be damned."
She screwed the cap back onto the bag and carried them and the glass over to the coffee table and set them down. She walked over and opened a closet door, pulling out an IV pole with a little box attached to it, and grabbed a small cardboard box from off a shelf and what looked like a tackle box. She set it on the coffee table after she pulled the pole over to the sectional and plugged it into the wall, opened the cardboard box and removed a cassette from inside and inserted it into the box on the pole.
"What's that?"
"It's a blood warmer for rapid transfusions, so I don't go into hypothermia or hemolysis. Little bastard cost 137 thousand, but at least you can buy them online. You put a fresh cassette in every time, the blood runs through it, by the time it gets to my arm it's body temp."
She opened the tackle box and removed two fresh lines, attaching one to the bottom of the warmer and one to the top, hanging the bags of blood but not connecting the first of them yet. The top had a drip chamber with a filter, and the bottom held the flow regulator and the hypodermic needle with the cannula inside.
"You know, it's not fucking fair, B, you shouldn't have dealt with half the shit in your life that you have."
She snorted and her lips pursed with anger as she sat down beside me.
"You sound like Rossi with that shit. That's why he wouldn't let me die, said it wasn't fair. I was ready to go into hospice, fuck it, I was ready to see my Mom again. But I'll tell you the same thing I told his stupid old ass. Life ain't fair. Cause if it was I'd have my mother and my baby's father and Jimmy's ass would be the one laying in the morgue. You think it's fair you almost lost a finger because of what he ordered?"
I laughed.
"No, I actually think that's pretty fair. That's karma, B. I was usually the one doing the beating. How do you think I ended up in prison?"
She looked hard at me for a moment.
"I mean, you never told me. You were pretty open about having gone to prison, but you never said why."
"Well, I learned to be open about it. Some people get real upset when they find out they're dealing with someone who's been through the system, so I didn't really wanna go through that again. So now I just tell people up front, let them decide for themselves if they wanna deal with me or not. That way they can't throw it back in my face, say I lied to them."
Becca let out a bitter chuckle.
"So what's your story?"
"Well, we still ain't finished your story, yet, but we'll take a detour. The whole thing started my Senior year of high school. First game of the year, I blew my knee out, big as a bitch, tore everything there was to tear, shit was basically hanging on by the skin alone. Orthopedics said I had two choices, keep playing football or, retain the ability to walk on that leg, so… there went all my big dreams of college ball and making it onto the Giants."
I nodded. "Middle linebacker. I was good at it. 6'7, 265 pounds but light on my feet, all muscle. Back then I was running 7 percent body fat, and wasn't even trying. Shit just… all came natural to me. It all blew up in my face. Shitloads of surgery and physical therapy, and then one day the pain pills stopped but the pain didn't. Everyday, every night, I was still hurting."
She nodded.
"I know about bone pain. I could always tell when I needed to up the dose when my bones started hurting. When I started out all it took was an insulin needle. Now I take so much, I'm not even sure I qualify as human. But I guess I won't be much longer. That's always been the plan. Just keep me alive till 30 and Ma's gonna make me like her. That's the preferred age for the Entrance, something to do with the Trinity."
I nodded.
"I started asking around school if anyone knew where to get some Percs but pain management keeps that shit so tight I could only get a few at a time. Not only was they expensive, it wasn't enough. I got hooked up with this kid named Alessandro, he told me if I really wanted to control the pain, he could get me something better and cheaper. He took me to meet his uncle, Colombian guy named Marco. First shot is free and it was… it was beautiful. Everybody always gets sick the first time, but I didn't. And then after that, all my free money from my after school job started going to horse, and uh, I got my last six months off school. I already had all the credits I needed from AP classes, started working full time. They didn't piss test. But, my tolerance was rising faster than my income was."
I took a deep breath.
"I'd been buying enough that Marco was offering me fronts but I never took it. So next time I went, I asked him for my usual and I asked how much it would be for two O's on the front, cause I knew a lot of other users and I was thinking of starting to sell myself. So, he told me he'd give me a pound, and we could settle up at the end of the month."
"Jesus Christ, if you were selling a pound a month you must have been making bank."
I shook my head.
"I wasn't in it for the money. I was in it to keep myself supplied. If I kept my prices right, I could use for free, and I had enough left over to pay my portion of the rent and help pay for the groceries. I got good at it, I'd take a shot, and nod out for a few minutes, then get up and start walking the streets."
Becca snorted.
"You wasn't standing on a street corner?"
"Fuck no. Too visible. I did all my business by phone. I had a burner and gave everyone the number, and when they needed some they'd give me a call and I'd meet them or they'd meet me. I had ethics. I used to have people offering me fucking blowjobs for a bag, but I always said no, shit felt wrong. All they had to do was pay me by the end of the month but, sometimes…"
She gave a grin.
"But sometimes, 'Bitch, where's my money?'"
"Yeah, sometimes people would try to skip out, so I had to apply a little pressure to persuade them to pay. I never killed nobody, it's hard as hell to get money out of a dead man. But, black a few eyes and break a few bones and suddenly they had money they didn't before. Being my size, there wasn't many of them that could fight back. But, I fucked up the wrong lowlife.
"There was this prick, he'd been dodging me for weeks. He owed me like two grand, I'd given him that much because I knew he had money, so when I finally caught up to him, I was pretty mad and, the bitch, he told me he wasn't going to pay me. Thought he was better than me, thought he could fuck me and get away with it. So I beat the mortal hell out of him, took his wallet. He had five grand in there but I figured, 3K surcharge for wasting my time."
I shook my head.
"But I should have done some better research on who I was going after. Turned out the little prick had a socialite for a mother and his Daddy was a hedge fund manager and… I'd hurt him pretty bad. First three months, not only was I dealing with DTs, I was waiting to see if they were going to add Murder to my charges. He was in a coma for that long, and when he woke up, he had to learn to walk again, how to feed himself. I beat him so bad I gave him brain damage."
"Goddamn, Tony."
"Apparently his parents knew their son's habits and knew exactly who I was, cause they went straight to the police, and two days later SWAT showed up, turned the house upside down. I smashed my phone into pieces, flushed it so they couldn't get my contacts, but I didn't think about the fact I still had the wallet with his driver's license in it. My grandparents disowned me, right then and there. I had just reupped so they caught me with 14 ounces, all it takes is 8 for Class A felony possession. I spent 13 months in Rikers, but my sister got me a good lawyer, he knew the judge and the prosecutor personally, golfed with them, so he got me a plea deal. I was looking at life in prison, but he argued that I was a good student that had made a bad mistake because of a chronic pain issue, and they were both first offenses, so if I pled guilty, agreed to go through a substance abuse program and anger management, then they'd give me the minimum sentence.
"15 years, Class A Felony Drug Possession, 3 years, Class B felony First Degree Assault, intentionally causing grievous bodily harm while in the commission of another felony. But, at my sentencing, the judge said I was a big guy, with a big anger problem. I hadn't killed anyone, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Said I was a danger to society, so when I got to the UCF, they put me in dark red."
I nodded.
"23 hours a day in a box by myself, no visitors, barely saw the guards. But, I stayed quiet, made no problems. Prison was overcrowded so I ended up with a cellmate, and I was glad to see him. It could have been Hannibal Lecter and I would have gave him a hug. He might have been a murderer but he was actually a decent guy. Him and his crew had knocked over some jewelry stores in Manhattan, last job went bad. He'd killed three cops, so he wasn't never getting out. Neither was his wife. Life in Bedford Hills."
"That's where they was gonna send me if Ma hadn't got the jury to give me a Not Guilty verdict."
I knew Becca had a tendency to get in trouble because beside the cheerleading pictures in the bodega, there was also a mugshot.
"What did you do?"
She gave a bitter chuckle again.
"Unlike you, I killed someone. 2021, this fucking crackhead tried to rob the store. He shot the customer that was in there, old guy named Mickey, killed him. He used to live in your apartment. Tried to shoot me, too, but the gun jammed and I had the aluminum baseball bat under the counter. I just started swinging. He went down, but I jumped the counter, and hit him again. Blood lust is a real thing. Once I saw he was bleeding, I wanted to see more. I beat his brains out, literally, he was dead long before the cops ever got there. Bat looked like a toothpick when I was done.
"They arrested me, and the DA himself showed up at my arraignment. Said self defense didn't apply, sent me straight up to Murder 2, requested I be denied bail because I had a passport and plenty of money so I was a flight risk. But we all knew the truth. He was still pissed that he hadn't been able to send Rossi away for longer, and I was the next best thing. Ma had to pull a lot of strings to make sure I still got my transfusions when I was in lockup. I was in Rikers for four months, had my eighteenth birthday sitting in the Singer Unit."
"Goddamned patterns," I muttered, then raised my voice again. "You, me, and Antoni all got that in common, except he wasn't like us. He was already in prison. That's what the rose meant, turned eighteen in prison. Life sentence, triple murder."
"He told you that?" She looked betrayed, so I was quick to answer.
"No, the tattoos told me that. Google is my best friend, B. That's what the skull and crossbones, and the coffins on his arm meant."
She swallowed, and nodded again.
"But, I moved down," I continued. "Went to orange when they moved me to Gen Pop, and I had friends waiting for me. Marco was very appreciative of me keeping quiet about my source at trial, so outside Abuela Bogota's was where I hung out the most. But I had friends all over. My sister was smart. She always put way more in my account than I could spend, so whenever I heard that somebody needed something, I'd go to the canteen and buy it myself and pass it to 'em. Nobody had to owe me shit. All I wanted was to be left alone, so I had people watching my back from all sides. I ended up in blue, got moved to the dormitory, started working in the kitchen, ended up running it, cause I was a 'model prisoner.'"
"You ever fool around with any of your cellmates?" Becca asked with a grin. "Cause I did."
I gave an uncomfortable laugh.
"I mean, yeah. 15 years is a long time to be alone. I don't consider myself bisexual even, but if somebody offers, you know…" I shrugged.
"I think the word you're looking for is heteroflexible. That's how Antoni referred to himself. He had a thing for you, you know."
That stopped me dead.
"You're fucking with me, B."
"Nope. He asked me once if I'd mind if he ever got the chance to hook up with you, and I told him no, as long as he didn't mind I still hooked up with my old girlfriends from high school. But he never asked you, said he loved you too much, was afraid of ruining your friendship."
"Jesus Christ," I shook my head, finally decided I needed time to process that, and moved on. "But, my last year there, Covid hit, and, I volunteered to work in the infirmary, but pretty soon the infirmary was filled, they started keeping people in the hallway, and finally they just ended up leaving them in their beds, I was all over the place. People dropping like flies. Everytime someone coughed or sneezed, everbody'd get nervous. I been smoking since I was 16, so I cough my lungs out every morning.
"People was looking at me like I was Death Incarnate. But I never caught it, not even once. And I was all around the sick, I was taking the bodies out to the truck outside the gate. Could've run but I didn't. Only had a few years left. It worked in my favor. They cut the last three years off my sentence, put me on supervised release and now, here I am, 36 years old, and just starting my adult life."
"Rossi got let out of lockup right before lockdown, poor bastard. Me, him, and my Dad all quarantined at Ma's, but of course, you know, me and Dad was essential workers so at least I got to get out of the house everyday. I graduated early, at 16, been working seven days a week since."
I glanced at the glass on the table.
"So let's get back to your story."
She shook her head, lips pursed again.
"Uh-uh, you're not wasting anymore time. Take the blood, but first," she reached out, quicker than I could even register, and used her thumbs to set my broken nose back straight.
I let out a yell, momentarily unable to see as my eyes filled with tears.
"Jesus wept, Becca, fucking hell, goddamn."
"Sorry. It would've hurt more if you'd known it was coming. Besides, you're a good looking guy, Tony, you don't wanna ruin your face."
"Thanks, B," I muttered as I pressed the toilet paper back to my freshly bleeding nose, tears streaming down my cheeks. "Need a haircut though."
"Nah, you oughta keep it. It's very The Dark Knight Joker, just black, not blonde and green."
I laughed quietly.
"Not sure that's the best association, B. A little too psychotic and violent."
She raised an eyebrow at me.
"Alright, alright. It's probably an accurate association, just a little less arson and murder." I sighed and looked at the scotch glass. "So how do I do this, B?"
"Think about it like a tequila shot. Take the shot and then slip the guard in quick. Then sit back, try to relax."
I nodded and grabbed the glass before I lost my nerve. I raised it in her direction.
"Geonbae." She responded.

2023.05.29 16:54 MarcelvanBasten Control is Remedy at its best. For the most part anyway

For a while, it looked like this would become my GOTY at the time of playing.
Control is awesome. It’s one of those games that you just want to play because of how good it feels to play it, which to me, was a Remedy first. I’ve always loved their games due to the aesthetics and narratives they encapsulate. The problem with them was always the mechanical side. From Max Payne to Quantum Break, none of their games have ever played great. Control is absolutely no different when it comes to story and art direction: the game looks incredible, with a very stylised presentation and masterful use of light, colour and cinematic tone. But what it does do differently is showing us Remedy at their gameplay peak.
I am actually somewhat shocked to see how much the studio has evolved on the gameplay front in a three-year span, since Quantum Break. The best example of this, apart from the character movement, can be found in the Arkane-like abilities Control allows you to use. You can shield, levitate, dash, and most notably, you can use virtually anything as a weapon (including enemies) by launching them. The latter in particular feels phenomenal to engage with. With the help of the surprising destructible environments, combat and interactivity become an absolute blast, and Launch becomes your main means of aggression - even if the game also offers you several effective, unique-looking guns to use. Tied to this is a rewarding sense of progression and power fantasy that Control infuses in the game as you through it and improve your abilities. This, more than anything, is the part of the game that I really loved.
Control is much more than that though. In true Remedy fashion, the story is rather mysterious, never straightforward and constantly engaging, even if the ending is a bit underwhelming. There are some truly interesting moments, impactful revelations, and if I had any criticism to levy against it, I’d say that the urgency imprinted on the narrative makes it illogical for the player to deviate from it in order to tackle some of the side content (though you can safely ignore stuff like the somewhat pointless Bureau Alert missions). Control’s story is highly interesting in the way that Max Payne, Alan Wake and Quantum Break’s stories are highly interesting. And part of it is handled through captivating worldbuilding and exposition, not just through documents, but through videos and curated shows (The Threshold Kids episodes are amongst the weirdest, creepiest things I’ve seen in games in recent years).
In fact, after playing it, I don’t understand the criticism I had heard saying there’s ‘too much to read’ in the game. I didn’t feel that - at all - at any point during the main campaign. The only exception to this was the AWE DLC, which in my opinion contained way too many collectibles, was way too driven by a fan-service appeal and, as a whole, was a low point in the whole Control experience. In fact, the introduction of this DLC towards the end-game phase threw off the pacing in a way that was so frustrating that made me ignore it and go back to focus on the main story. A story which, ironically, didn’t even need that expansion to offer the fans really interesting, logical and satisfying connections to the Alan Wake universe. Personally, I think the AWE expansion would’ve worked much better if unlocked only after the main game, since you can continue to play it anyway.
Another thing I loved about Control was its level design, which again, showed us Remedy in a way we hadn’t quite seen before. The Bureau building is incredible, vast, unique, and in a lot of ways a character in itself. Granted, navigation is a bit confusing until you get the hang of it, and if I’m being honest, I wasn’t really fond of the fact that some of the areas are initially locked - metroidvania-style - for no real reason. But the fast travel system works quite well and makes backtracking feel seamless, so no real issues there. Getting to know the building, with all its nooks and secrets, was an absolute joy and delivered no short amount of surprises and really high moments.
So my overall impression after playing Control is a really, really positive one. I ended up not loving it as much as Alan Wake just because I personally felt the story wasn’t as good and didn’t quite stick the landing. But there’s no denying that there are a lot of things in this game that highlight Remedy’s technical evolution and cement them as one of the most interesting, identifiable studios in the industry. Highly recommended. 8.5/10

2023.05.29 16:51 sideCharacterrr To all the adults that hurt me.

Hi! This is a throwaway account because I can't use my main acct since I use that username as my IGN in every game that I played, and I don't want to be recognize by people I know irl. I've recently started reading a book called "Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents," and it's made me understand why I try to avoid developing relationships with others.
To my dad, I know you are fighting your own demons but setting the house on fire where your daughters are sleeping is not the way to get rid of it. You tried to reconnect with me but it’s too late.
To my aunt and uncle (mother side), who teased my sister and I when our parents divorced and made us feel unwanted.
To my Algebra teacher, who humiliated me in front of the class after I questioned why the given solution was inaccurate and unrelated to the problem at hand. When I first saw you in my final year of high school as my Chemistry teacher, I was terrified. Up until the day I graduated, you bullied me.
To my aunt (father side), you accused me of stealing money from you. You accused me of doing drugs. You used me as your emotional punching bag.
To my stepdad, you were nice at first. I finally thought that I have a father I can rely on. But you said I was freeloading at the age of 10. You also threaten me to fix my attitude with a gun. And now, you’re clueless as to why I don’t want to be anywhere near you.
To my mom, I will be forever grateful to you for raising me and my sister as a single parent. I just wish you try to understand me better. I just wish that you try to understand that I failed my subject because I can’t focus. I have ADHD and you never knew. Instead, you resort to physically hurting me when I failed a subject. You dismissed my feelings when I feel scared around my stepdad. You gaslighted me into thinking that it did not happen, and I started to doubt myself. You showed that you love our half-brother more and you let us hear that he was the thing that ever happened to you. It left me thinking that my existence will never be enough. Overall, you are still able to do a decent job at being my mom and I thank you for that.

2023.05.29 16:37 sprkwtrd Here's an analysis for everyone to disagree with

Barry is a show about idealization.
Barry isn't a typical killer: he's sensitive, other-directed. He becomes a killer when his army buddies love him for it; he becomes an assassin when Fuches loves him for it. He becomes an actor when he sees a glimmer of admiration in the eyes of Sally, Gene and the other people in the class. He becomes religious when, having lost his acting career, he thinks God and his son might love him for it. He's incapable of self-esteem.
He's not the only one. Sally's loveless childhood makes her narcisstic and desperate for success. Gene wants to regain his former glory. NoHo Hank wants nothing but a 50/50 with Cristobal. They need a new story to tell about themselves.
Idealization in the form of acting turns out to be rather difficult. The ugliness that the image is supposed to cover over constantly seeps through. The actors don't know how to act unless they draw on real experiences, which pulls them back into the person they didn't want to be anymore. Barry can't make a clean break from the past without having to tie up loose ends (i.e. killing people in between acting classes). Sally's family comes back to push her into a fit of rage. After the time skip, she ironically ends up in a kind of Joplin, Missouri. Gene can't stop being an asshole to his son ("I pray that human beings can change their nature, because if they can't then you and I are in deep trouble."). NoHo Hank's Chechen ties get him to betray Cristobal. Barry and Sally don't know how to be parents, they can only act out what they think parents look like.
Only Fuches is a bit different: he tries to run (the shepherd sequence), but he comes back.
When the image breaks down, the characters have different reactions. Some of them realize that you can only make a clean break by affirming what you were before. Fuches is the pinnacle of this. He becomes a new person ("The Raven"), but only by accepting his nature: The prison guard gives him a friendly wave, his girlfriend falls for him, his crew loves him. His stepdaughter is even more or less OK with him beheading people, since he was upfront about it. The assassins can't kill him. Rockets swerve to miss. Every bullet misses him in the shootout.
The rest of the cast is saved or damned by fate depending on whether they accept the truth about who they were in the past.
The damned:
- NoHo Hank was on the verge of confessing to the murder of Cristobal, but then calls Fuches a liar and immediately gets shot.
- Gene never told the full story about Barry (the money) and is sucked back into wanting to make a movie about his life. Moss immediately begins to pursue him after his meeting with the movie exec.
The saved(-ish):
- Sally's visions cause her to turn herself in and acquires a degree of self-esteem for it. (Hence her confidently saying 'No' to the guy asking her out.) But she's still more or less dependent on the opinion of her son.
- Barry wants to turn himself in and he immediately gets his punishment in the form of a bullet to the head. (Significantly he's shot by a stage gun that fires real bullets.) He's obviously not going to heaven, but he gets what he wanted: an idealization of his life, the adoration of audiences ("Wow!") and his son.
So the show has a kind of karma logic to it, but it's not based on what you factually did (Gene didn't deserve to go to jail on those grounds), but on your honesty in accepting it.

2023.05.29 16:04 froggyjm9 I completely dislike Shiv…but I think everyone is missing the post about the siblings…they aren’t serious people, they are all messed up bullshit.

For me Shiv’s doubts started when Kendall was given a chance to speak on his vision of the company and he could only said “GoJo is a bad deal, I have a deck with our financials, but who cares let’s just vote”— he had a chance to win more people to his side, but he was all show. At that point I think Shiv understood there was a huge chance Kendall was going to squander everything and maybe just like Matsson just cut her off after he got the crown and maybe even tank the share price with his wild ideas.
If he didn’t go psycho on her, if Kendall could have stood in front of the board and said “Shiv and Roman will be a huge part of the company running ATN and socials” she would have voted yes.
She chose Matsson, because she walks away with money and a sniff of power with Tom, who she is still trying to have a relationship with, even without knowing he was gunning for CEO.
The GoJo deal was a serious deal, Kendall isn’t a serious person. He’s a good showman, but not a business killer, he’s never been— he always loses, he thinks he’s him, but always falls short. He’s a mess.
Roman is most definitely also not a serious person.
Shiv, thinks she is, but she isn’t one either.
Tom is a serious person who would do anything to be in power, he came from “nothing” so he understands he needs to scheme his way to the top, just like Logan did at one point.
The siblings are all bullshit, not sure why people think Shiv “stole” anything from Kendall, he did that himself.

2023.05.29 16:04 EddieMunson221 Counterpoints to a few popular criticism's of the finale.

There's many unresolved plot points (Man with no eyes, Crystal/Kristen etc.) this post will focus on criticism of character development or things people felt were resolved, but in very poor ways. These are just counterpoints to stimulate debate and not intended to dismiss any criticism as unjustified.

#1 - "Teen Van became so unlikeable, and the least relatable character"
Unlikeable, sure, and Liv doing a great job of portraying that. To me, Van is still one of the most relatable teenagers in the 1997 timeline.
Van got left for dead on the crashed plane and resented Jackie for it. Then Tai went AWOL on night-watch and Van got her face ripped off by wolves. Then thrown on a fire, for dead. Nobody on the team had her back, and nobody was watching her back, when Van most needed them to do that.
Trust issues on steroids, right there, especially for a starving teenager to try process.
The physical scars from it are the only ones we can see but the emotional scars must run deep.
That Van turned to a supernatural explanation for her survival, is relatable, I mean, fuck, I'd probably believe in a higher power too, if I survived a plane crash AND a pack of wolves mauling me within the same month!
From that perspective, her belief that this higher power "chose" to let her survive and "chose" to let Javi die, isn't all that crazy. It's absolutely nuts and borderline sociopathic, objectively, but in her mind and cult-like thinking, it probably checks out.
That she's become colder, emotionally detached, self-centered, is understandable. Van knows she can't truly count on anyone in an emergency, or to do her any favors to get out of this alive, not even Tai, because Tai might be off sleepwalking again.
S3 might be Van's redemption arc.
#2 - "Travis should have been in Natalie's death dream"
Subjective, like anything else, but to me that scene felt more touching and profound with Javi being there and not Travis.
Nat couldn't have saved Travis in the present-day timeline but she could have (at least tried to) save Javi. She took that guilt with her out of the wilderness, and carried it throughout her adult life. The guilt of letting a child die in her place.
For that death dream to have emotional resonance and catharsis, Javi offering Nat an olive branch of forgiveness, not to be afraid, was more powerful to me than a Nat-Travis sort of Titanic-esque Jack & Rose reunion.
#3 - "No way Saracusa folds so easily to Walter's threat"
When the cops searched the Sadecki's house, we saw that Saracusa was super confident and cocky in dismissing Callie's plan to claim he took advantage of her. That cockiness though was solely based on Kevyn having his back, if Callie actually pursued it.
When he sees Kevyn is dead and his own gun emptied 3 bullets into him, it's probably tempting to go along with Walter's plan and let Kevyn take the fall for all of it. Doing so would remove a potential future Callie problem.
A little too convenient but I can equally buy Saracusa is a smarmy, crooked cop willing to prioritize self-preservation over getting justice for his partner.

These are all just counterpoints with a view to encouraging discussion, it's not like we have a new episode any time soon :)
I love the show and try to look for the good in people, as opposed to reductively dismissing any of the teenagers as beyond redemption.

2023.05.29 16:00 Nicolas873 Doom 3 is pretty mediocre

It took me a bit but I have finally managed to finish Doom 3. Note that I played the vanilla version and not the BFG edition. From what I have read, the BFG edition gives you much more ammo, adds in a head/ chest-mounted flashlight and also has fewer enemy spawns. So apparently a whole lot easier and less scary than the original release.
A lot of people (or at least that's the impression I got) consider Doom 3 a black sheep for taking the franchise into an entirely different direction. From a fast-paced action game to a slower one with more emphasis on horror. Personally, I don't mind the change at all and actually think it's a really interesting idea that could work. Unfortunately, it feels like id didn't have a coherent vision for the game and just put together something that excels at neither being a good horror game nor a good FPS.
The game has 27 levels but for the sake of simplicity I'll mostly talk about "sections", so either entire levels or part of them to explain why I didn't enjoy the game. For several sections, especially early on, you are making your way through parts of the UAC facilities on Mars, slowly and room by room. The atmosphere is dense, most humans you encounter are dead with only a small handful of survivors scattered around. Most of the time you are on your own and only get to see the fallout of the hellish invasion. Apart from allowing you to pass the security clearance check for doors, the PDAs that can be found provide additional information on the game world, ranging from describing Life on Mars among the UAC personnel to research and medical examinations all of which become more disturbing as you progress through the game. Reading about how the (mental) health of the marines and research personnel that have been "to the other side" quickly started to deteriorate was genuinely terrifying and really added to the atmosphere. These moments of silence are broken up by hostile forces you encounter. These can vary from demons to possessed humans. Sections like these are just great. The game doesn't try too hard to scare you and let the atmosphere and world they built instead do the work. If the game had been like this throughout its entirety I would find it hard to not recommend it. Unfortunately, these sections are too few and far between.
Ouside of them, the game feels almost amateurish at times. It heavily relies on cheap jumpscares to give you a sense of dread. Monsters spawning in front and behind you at the same time, walls suddenly coming off the moment you walked past them revealing an imp ambush, monsters lunging at you the moment you open a door. The existence of these cheap mechanics wouldn't necessarily sour the game for me if they weren't used throughout the entire game up until the end. For me they had already gotten stale two hours in. Additionally, by 2004 a lot of great horror games had already been released. Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dino Crisis and many more - all of which showed there are much "better" and more mature ways to do horror than to simply use jumpscares. Doom 3 really just did miss the mark by a mile.
The action-oriented sections are mostly not good either. Enemies almost exclusively spawn in so you can't strategically clear a room as it's empty until a trigger is activated by like picking up an item, entering a room or interacting with something. Your movement is very sluggish even while sprinting and the jumping feels awful. In some levels there are rooms or scaffoldings with items hidden inside or on top of them - similar to what you would find in Half-Life. But unlike Half-Life, getting to them can be a really pain. Imagine Half-Life 1 or 2 movement with a much higher gravity so that even crouch jumping does not work reliably anymore. The weapons are mostly unremarkable as well. Particularly the shotgun is terrible due to its high spread meaning it is only reliable at literally point blank range. At shorter ranges it can still sometimes one-hit kill enemies but only inconsistently which leads to frustrations. The other guns don't really stand out either. Grenades have a weird trajectory and bounce around like mad which can sometimes lead to your own demise. Among the arsenal is also the rocket launcher which doesn't really fit into the game as it mostly takes place in small rooms and tight corridors. Another often touched upon aspect is the lack of a flashlight. In the calmer sections I described earlier switching to it doesn't really bother me that much since you're primarily just exploring. But when the game amps up the pace and throws a large number of enemies at me, some small and completely shrouded in darkness, fighting them is not hard or scary but just becomes a nuisance. It's just annoying. For some reason the facility is also really dark. Way too dark, even before the invasion as you even find PDA entries in which UAC personnel complains about flickering/ failing lights. Yet they never did anything about it? A trained marine never considers the possibility of using tape to keep their hands free? Or at the very least keeping it in his left hand when using the pistol so they can use both at the same time and at least have some sort of defense and not be completely exposed and vulnerable? And what about the people who designed the combat armor? The game really makes you feel like you're not playing as a trained soldier but rather as an idiot working for a company full of idiots. This is even a problem in Hell. Before I played Doom 3, the image of hell I had in my mind was one of eternal torment in searing heat - with lava, flames and all that - anything but dark. But in Doom 3? Hell was so dark at times that I didn't even immediately see the skeletons hanging from the ceiling the game rattled hoping to scare me. I wasn't even scared of enemy encounters ther either. I was scared of falling into a pit or a hole in the ground I didn't see because it was pitch dark and I'd have to redo some sections. In Hell, the game also starts using smaller enemies like trites and cherubs in larger numbers. They often spawn behind you as well to give you that cheap Doom 3 horror experience. It gets even worse when you consider the fact that taking damage from any enemy causes your camera to shake around which makes killing smaller-sized enemies at short ranges even more of a slog than it already is. When you return to Mars this continues for a few levels. My most hated sections were around that point. I'd found myself at the other end of a bridge Dr. Betruger had previously destroyed and trites start spawning. Seemingly endlessly. It felt like a triggered hadn't properly activated as I stood there one tapping with the P90 at the trites that spawned and approached almost one by one for far too long. Reminded me more of a cheap mod someone threw together than the studio that once defined the FPS genre. The other section comes shortly after. You find a locked door and receive the objective of retrieving a missing door panel. Eventually, you find yourself in a small tight server room that's again too dark. The game spawns trites and cherubs all around you in addition to some monster closets that activate once you have walked past them. If they wanted to scare me, they failed. If they wanted to annoy the player - job done.
Another thing that hurts the game is its length. The pacing is off due to too many samey levels and drags on for far too long as a result. So much time is spent advancing through the alpha labs just to use a train to go through the delta labs. From there you go to hell for like 15 minutes before return to Mars. The UAC facilities finally start to look more disturbed by blending the original research facility design with hell. Personally, I would have cut some alpha/ delta labs levels (or inbetween) and made hell a bit longer. There is just too much time spent in similarly looking sections that mostly play the same and while the game tries to address this with hell and the levels that follow after, it was already too late for me. There are 27 levels and you don't enter hell until level 20.
I also played Resurrection of Evil, an expansion pack to Doom 3 by Nerve Software, and found it to be quite better than the base game. Most of the scariness comes from the atmosphere of the facility and not cheap jumpscares or enemies spawning behind you. When the action kicks in the game also feels much better. You no longer feel ill-equipped at shorter ranges thanks to the double-barreled shotgun which shreds demons and the enemy spawns are mostly much better placed so you don't have to constantly turn around or check for monster closets. The double-barreled shotgun is also the only weapon with which I was successfully able to kill an imp mid-air while it was lunging at me after I opened a door. In Doom 3? Even when I reacted in time the spread was so high I never got a kill even though I was dead on. Unfortunately, it still has the same darkness issues that plagued the base game, especially in hell. The Lost Mission campaign found in the BFG edition is even better and was actually good throughout.
All in all, Doom 3 isn't a good horror game and not a good FPS either. I do think it has a great atmosphere, sound design and also visuals for its time but in conjunction with the poor gameplay it feels more like a tech demo. And at the end of the day, if it isn't fun, then why bother?

2023.05.29 15:59 vsemohouci Game does not want me to give it chance

Stupid little story, but it got me really down and sad/salty. I am mainly Bright Sands player who is going to Crescent Falls and 3rd map only for quests, I am casual so max 10 drops a week (1-3 drops a day). I am lvl 9-10 at vendors and just few days ago I found 10th resin gun for quarters upgrade. So, I am like over 1 hour on Tharis Island map, ratting every corner, avoiding players, trying to get spine briars (did not found any), but 1st ever time found Charged Tharis Iron Ingot and Tharis Iron Ingot, never even have them in inventory before... I am 50m from extract, after 60+minutes long drop and game crashes, FIRST TIME CRASH EVER FOR ME, I was playin since aplha/beta and all 3 season. Like the game was: "You are having fun and excitement? FUCK YOU AND DON'T COME BACK, IDIOT."
As I said, get me really down and sad/salty.

2023.05.29 15:54 reinishii WTF is underdeveloped?

I was lost in my thoughts the other day and came to a realization on how India barely gets the credit it deserves. A lot of people stereotype India as "under developed" and for "proof" they show images of slum areas, but you could legit say the same thing for America (not directly targeting anyone just giving an example) and show images of homeless people in NY city, or show the statistics of gun violence. But thats not the point here, India in my opinion was technolgically and medically advanced from ancient times, (to be exact in my opinion, it was India and China) No wonder the Brits wanted to take over! This thought originally occured when an Indian friend of mine showed her skin care and hair care routine which is all completly natural involving a herbal mixture for the hair, and a turmeric mixture for the face. All were herbs from India. But this practices were there since ancient times. Of course this is just one example but there are too many to give and i'm kinda lazy to give them all. In actual my point is what in actual defined an underdeveloped country? It would be helpful if someone who is more knowledgebale about this topic give more examples. And i can give the other examples if anyone is up for debate

2023.05.29 15:28 ravensmith666 Flea market Rules 1

I’m at an indoor flea market. Each tenant has their own shop and we all signed a contract that required us to be there every sat from 9-5 and sun 12-6. It states clearly who to contact if you can’t be there. Let’s just discuss that one rule. It’s chaotic because people roll in whenever they want, not at all or they set their hrs to like 10-2 and still don’t bother. There was a tenant meeting a few months ago and I’ve never seen so much deflection, projection, blatant lies and suggestions on what the owners could do to get people in there. So the owners implemented every single suggestion in the meeting except one that was just stupid, including adding a bathroom. Attendance did not improve at all so a new procedure was implemented if you don’t show. I’ve never seen so much outrage and it’s insane to me. One vendor is so entitled and thinks they’re so important that they are specifically being targeted and it’s all been orchestrated by another vendor who is clearly out to get them. Another said they’d be happy to show up when the owners get the customers in there. (I was gobsmacked) I had no idea that the building owners were required to supply you with customers! Are there any successful stores that just open whenever? Do people with real shops think it’s ok to ask you to call them if somebody shows up wanting to buy? And not just take the money for -if it’s marked. They want you to do like a zoom negotiation. Am I crazy to think this is unacceptable behavior?

2023.05.29 15:26 The-MS-Paint-Master Confusion about Yakuza 4's main plot point

I finished Yakuza 4 a couple months ago and continued through playing the franchise (Currently on 6 - really enjoying it), but one thing about 4 stuck in my mind and I couldn't figure it out.
Obviously, 4 revolves around Saejima's assassination attempt on the Ueno. In the intro to his part, Majima shows Saejima the guns and bullets they'll be using. He says "Got 'em through the Dojima Family. Hundred percent certified."
Again, obviously, these guns had rubber bullets. Who in the Dojima Family provided these guns? Who was in cahoots with the police in '85? I don't ever remember it being mentioned in game, and the videos I've watched on Yakuza 4 also don't mention it. I feel like I'm missing something.
It doesn't ruin the plot for me not knowing this, I like Yakuza 4's story a lot.
