July 20th, year 024 Angels Descent
The class, with two of their teachers, were en route to the Ironwoodlands. They had been on the road for a few days as the Ironwoods themselves were at the far west of Greed’s domain, and the gate was more central to the region.
“So, you kids ever been to the Ironwoods?” All but Tasha and Alex shook their heads to indicate no.
“I’ve apparently only been once when I met Elissa’s father… at least that’s what my journal said… memory is still hazy for me… Yuu, you’ve been here a few times, right?”
“Yeah, when master got tired of me making machines that destroyed buildings, he threw me to the elves to ‘play’, as he called it.”
“Any advice? Elissa hasn’t really talked about her home much, so I’m kind of in the dark myself.” The class focused their attention on Yuu, who held her hands to her hips and puffed her chest with pride.
“Of course, young one, I shall educate you as you do your students. After all, I am an expert in interacting with Ironwood Elves!!”
“Yuu… you are like a few hours older than me; I wouldn’t call me young?”
“Silence, young one!”
“So what should we do then? Are there any rules like for courting an Ironwood elf?” Maxwell asked, glancing at Tasha.
“Well, first off, ignore Tasha,” Yuu said bluntly. “Second, a big thing to remember is there are three clans of Ironwood elves. First are the worker folk; they do the everyday stuff. The second is the warrior clans; they are self-explanatory. Finally, there are the outside clans.”
“Outside clans?” Bea repeated.
“Oh, I’m part of that!!!” Tasha said, beaming a smile at everyone.
“They are clans not taught the normal ways of Ironwood elves. This is so they can actually interact with the outside world and not cause a diplomatic incident.”
“Uh… what do you mean?” Daisy asked, only to follow Yuu’s gaze towards Alex.
“Oh yeah… Elissa is part of the Warrior Clan, and the first time I met her, she gave me a friendly little bump to the chest.”
“That sounds cute,” Daisy muttered, thinking of all the times she had seen the pair be so lovey-dovey.
“Cute bit was when he flew through three walls and shattered his spine.”
“WHAT?!!!”
“Yeah, the warrior clan greet people they consider as friends with a full-force punch. It’s why their warriors are weirdly durable and able to endure considerable pain,” Yuu explained, glancing at Tasha, who had learnt such a skill from Elissa herself.
“So first rule, you see any elf with a weapon, flip them off, stick out your tongue and be as rude as possible. The second they think you are a friend, you will suffer for it.”
“My brother has been brought here?” Daisy muttered, feeling a pang of panic about her brother receiving such treatment.
“Oh, don’t worry; Elissa will keep them safe.”
“So, will they treat the Big Chief like a friend?”
“Oh yeah, certainly… this one, however,” Yuu said, gesturing to Alex.
“I’m technically rather hated by the Ironwood elves.”
“Why? Aren’t you marrying their princess?” Daisy asked, shocked.
“Well, need I remind you her brother took an arena full of noble children with high-ranking lords hostage to rescue her? They adore Elissa. I’m just the human bastard who stole her away.”
“To be honest, sir, from what Miss Yuu has told us, why don’t they just kill you?”
“Blunt question Maxwell but a thing to remember Elves live for a very long time. They see me more as a short fling that’ll last a few decades, maybe a century or two. After which, I’ll die, and she’ll move back.”
“And you’re ok with this?”
“Maxwell… a thing you’ll learn when you find the one… you will never care what the world thinks so long as you can be with her,” Alex replied as he looked out the window wistfully.
“We’re almost at the first town,” the carriage driver announced. “I ain’t gonna take you any further.”
“Good, we can get some rest in a real bed,” Kline grumbled.
Stepping out of the carriage, the class came face to face with their first experience of an elf settlement. They had originally had the image of what had always been written about elven homes. Buildings entwined with trees. Great structures as if moulding nature itself.
The image before them was an entirely metallic set-up. Every building was coated in metal plates and had countless spikes. Worse still was the severed monster heads resting on each building's roof.
“Big Chief?”
“You won’t get much rest outside the Ironwoods capital. This region is infested with monsters that attack every night.”
“Why would they settle in a region with monsters?!!!” Kline cried out.
“The majority of their population are warriors. Where else can they get a good fight?” Yuu replied.
“So Miss Elissa had to fight every night since she was a child?” Daisy asked once again, feeling worry begin to bubble up.
“You didn’t?” Tasha asked, looking perplexed. “Everyone around here, regardless of clans, learns how to fight monsters from when we first can walk. Only the warrior clan focuses on it and gets all the fun.”
The class decidedly ignored Tasha’s comment and chose a fortress-looking inn for where they would rest for the evening. Though they weren’t certain how much rest they’d get, especially after seeing the monster head hanging near the entrance. The innkeeper welcomed them with open fists, only to be rebuffed as they had been instructed to do.
“Fine, here’s your keys, you ungrateful pieces of crap!”
Throwing the key at the class, they only barely dodged as they lodged themselves into the wall behind them. A wall they couldn’t help but notice had numerous holes from past throws of the keys.
“Me and Yuu are gonna settle in at the tavern and have a few. You can get some rest,” Alex said as he sat at a table, ignoring the baleful glares pointed in his direction.
“Come get us if you need help,” Yuu added as she ignored an elf actively punching her in the face.
The class settled into a large room with bunkbeds enough for the whole class and their teachers. As they rested, trying to clear away the fatigue of a long journey, the hours began to pass.
“So Tasha… what are your parents like?” Maxwell asked, looking up from his spot on a bottom bunk.
“They are rather boring. Daddy works as a clerk in Hades seat. Mum works as a monster cleaner.”
“Monster cleaner?” Daisy repeated.
“Yeah, the dead bodies of monsters we slay we display on our buildings to show how strong a monster we beat. Well, after a while, they go icky and need cleaning. Mum handles that.”
“So, the really big monster head we saw near the entrance?”
“Yeah, means the guys here must be really strong.”
“I’m starting to wonder what I should fear more, the monsters or the elves,” Bea muttered as she snuggled on Gunter’s chest.
“Not sure what you mean… but I’m sure my family will love Stampy,” Tasha proudly took the small creature out of her travel bag, where it proceeded to munch on a piece of plant she offered it.
“Kwooooon!!!”
“I’m more wondering what they’ll think of me,” Maxwell muttered to himself.
“What was that?”
“Nothing!”
“Sparky… come on, boy, I got some snakkums for you,” Daisy said as she held out a piece of travel jerky for her duck-sized dragon. The small creature poked its head out of her travel pack and snatched the dried meat before retreating.
“He’s been rather scared lately,” Daisy muttered.
“Probably the field of danger here,” Tasha replied as she scratched Stampy’s long neck.
“Danger field?” Kline echoed, looking nervous.
“Can’t you feel it?” Tasha asked, looking confused. “Try to feel the aura.”
Relaxing, the class focused their senses, and that was when the pressure began to rise. They had been able to ignore it so far as it had become more like background noise. It was nowhere near as bad as when their instructors pressured them directly. But it was enough to cause minor discomfort.
“What is that, Tasha?” Bea asked.
“That is, um… it's all the monsters' aura getting spread across the woods.”
“So what we are feeling is…” Kline began before trailing off with a look of horror.
In one of their lectures with Alex, he had taught them you can increase the density of aura in an area by focusing and compacting it, but the problem with that is it reduced the range. Another option was you could increase the number of people releasing aura. Experiencing this pressure from a vague distance meant the numbers must be considerable or very strong. Likely both from what had been described.
“Why in the hell would people live here?!!!”
“Well, the trees were the original reason,” Tasha replied, oblivious to how nervous Kline was starting to become.
“The trees are really big, and iron whatsits grow through them. That’s why they call them ironwood trees. Also, my ancestors liked fighting and making friends, so here they could do both.”
As the class began to ponder who unhinged and crazy Tasha’s people must actually be, the entire inn violently shook. Jumping from their beds, the class immediately went into action mode and rushed down the stairs to find several of the inn’s staff rushing out the front door with weapons.
Looking around, they found their teachers relaxing with drinks, still having a friendly conversation as if they were oblivious to the dangers outside. Running towards the pair, they stood at the ready.
“Oh hey kids, me and Yuu were about to grab a deck of cards. Want to join in a game or two?”
“Sir, the inn is under attack!” Daisy shouted indignantly.
“And?” Alex replied, tilting his head.
“We should help!” Maxwell answered as if stating the obvious.
“Why?” Yuu answered this time. Both teachers looked confused. Ignoring the cries for help and pained screams coming from outside.
“Because, sir, you have the power to help!!!” Daisy shouted.
“And that makes me beholden to them? Daisy, I gained this power to ensure my freedom to do what I wanted. It may seem callous, but just because I have the power to help does not mean I or anyone else are under any obligation to help.”
“Big Chief, please help!!” Gunter pleaded.
“Sorry, but the dork is right. We may have the strength to help resolve many situations, but people do not grow if someone else solves every little thing.”
“Kids… this is a lesson you will need to learn someday… You can’t help everyone, and in reality, you shouldn’t. You will either run yourself ragged or become someone else’s tool. Gain power to ensure freedom. If you kids want to help, you can go and help. But me and Yuu here will be starting a professional game of snap.”
“Fine, we will go out and help them!” Bea shouted indignantly as the class stormed out of the tavern and out into the town.
The sight that greeted them was one of abject chaos. There were already a few collapsed buildings, and they could see people running around in a panic. Down the road from their inn, they could even see the remains of one of the attacking monsters.
It was a giant beast about the size of a two-storey tall building. It was covered in boney plates that, even from how far away they were standing, looked needlessly thick. While its tail looked like a massive boney club, the kind used by giants.
“Earthen Drakes… Armoursauses, if I had to guess,” Maxwell said, looking at the remains.
“What can we do then?” Bea asked as she channelled her energy into bringing out her possession summon.
“We can spread out in teams of two. One enhancer and one projection and focus on the small fry,” Kline suggested as he fired an accurate shot that took the head off a small turkey-sized lizard monster.
“Ok, Kline and Tasha, you go that way. Gunter and Bea, you go to the south. Maxwell, you and me will head east,” Daisy declared. Maxwell hesitated for a moment looking at Tasha before nodding. With their plans decided, the class split up to face the attack.

A Scholarly Summary of Skyrim - Road Work
As we left Winterhold, I am thankful that our journey was fraught with far fewer perils than the day before, as my mind was still reeling with the possibilities of joining Curator Morellus. Before I knew it, we were coming up on Fort Kastav again. I saw movement on the battlements and prepared for another fight. Imagine my surprise, and then disappointment, when I saw the uniforms of the Stormcloaks.
https://preview.redd.it/fnspm0d33i2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=ea14de9570758b81b23f512dc79e9073b7248ae3
I think I was able to hide my emotions, but it frankly turned my stomach to see these ignorant traitors claiming the benefits for work I had done. I can only be but so surprised. They have already decided that they owe the Empire nothing for their freedom and defense. It would be out of character for them to consider the sacrifices and efforts of others.
We continued beyond the fort, past the former encampment of the Seducers, and eventually made it to the crossroads. I was temporarily tempted to turn east and spend the night in Windhelm, but Brelyna reminded me that this is the seat of the turncoat Ulfric Stormcloak and would be decidedly unfriendly to her as a Dunmer. We resolved to continue west, following the road to that promised to lead us to Whiterun.
Unfortunately, this is where our ease of travel came to an abrupt end.
https://preview.redd.it/hamw2i62nn2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=c9e5a417777e9c7abfe4bbc60e68dc6a1c29e07d
To the left of the road, I could make out an artificial barricade of some sort next to the destroyed remnant of a merchant's caravan. I could see figures moving around, but I thought it unlikely that these were the merchants. Given the encounter I'd had with the Seducers the previous day, I knew it likely that this was one of their raiding parties. As I crept closer, my hypothesis was confirmed: I could see the leader wearing their distinctive armor.
Brelyna and I crept up and sprung upon them. It was a pitched battle [Editor's note: she died twice], but we were able to overcome them. The more concerning thing I discovered, however, was a necromancer's alter in the center of the encampment! I must remain vigilant to any more signs of these bandits. They are more dangerous than the typical highwaymen and brigands that harry travelers.
As night fell, we passed a sign for the Nightgate Inn. What a pleasant surprise!
https://preview.redd.it/ck6ja6hgtn2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e5b7b13b54f8607e62e750cc1f9ec72af9ce8e9
The accommodations were sufficient, but I will say the conversation was severely lacking. The innkeeper was welcoming and professional, but the other patrons were...unimpressive. The orc refused to engage, and I wish the drunk would have followed suit. Nothing but vile racism. I did find some interesting notes about an investigation being conducted around the premises. Perhaps it relates to the Seducers?
The following morning dawned clear and bright. We left early, continuing west, but soon came across more bandits. Brelyna and I attacked aggressively, assuming to have again discovered Seducers, but it was over almost before it began. If I can be honest, I nearly felt guilty. We decided not to delve deeper into their lair and simply carried on with our journey.
We encountered a few wild animals (wolves, spiders, and bears, to name a few), but the rest of the morning was rather uneventful. As we turned south and descended from the mountains, I found a south-easterly path which seemed it may lead toward Fellglow Keep. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I found some ancient Nordic ruins and a grove of some kind, but it was ultimately a waste of our time. We turned back to the main road and hurried along.
In the mid-afternoon, we were solidly into the warmer farmlands of Whiterun. We even began to find the roads patrolled by armored guards of the hold! On the side of the road, I again saw a broken-down wagon. Fearing another incursion by the Seducers, I hurried forward to speak with the jester who seemed to be responsible for the situation.

Delayed Burial

Thankfully, this was just a simply thrown wheel. The jester, Cicero by name, was apparently trying to take his mother to her final resting place, but had run into mechanical difficulty. I was shocked to learn that the farmer at whose doorstep he found himself had refused to aid him!
I marched up to the hill to the proprietor, Vantus Loreius, and gave him a piece of my mind. He gave some jingoistic claptrap about strangers during war times, but I would have none of it. With a little determination, I was able to make him see the light and take responsibility for aiding someone in need. It hurts nothing help an innocent traveler!
https://preview.redd.it/96bi8mario2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=fca3b7fe480edaeb55536585808a7d0fe65576d7

With this matter resolved, Brelyna and I hurried to continue our journey. Just a few hours later, I found what I believe to be the path that would take us towards Fellglow Keep. I chaffed, however, as the sun was already beginning to set behind the walls of Whiterun. I forced to make a decision: would we press on along this path, climbing into the mountains once again as night descended upon us, or would we turn towards the city?
Frustrating as it was, I could not justify forcing Brelyna up that path. It was my choices that brought us here so late, and I had no certainty that this was even the correct path. If this turned out to be yet another false lead, I could doom us to either a sleepless night or one exposed to the elements. We marked this point on our map and set our sights on Whiterun's main gates. I am so thankful that we did!
https://preview.redd.it/mrc3gcgu2p2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=a49789e1115764e2f7f5306c511da1e85acabbad
A giant was attacking one of the farmsteads! Brelyna and I caught site of it from the road and joined battle immediately. It seemed there were others already assaulting the beast and our combined efforts were able to fell the monster. I spoke with one of them (she called herself "Aela the Huntress"), and she invited me to join their order of adventurers. The "Companions". I was as polite as I could be, but my intellect will be of far more use to the Empire than working as a glorified mercenary.
https://preview.redd.it/bjfwj4gw3p2b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=555b1204d751afeddfc7cc3ddcdc10b7db0362b0
Finally, we made it inside the walls. The moons were already high in the sky, so we simply found our way to The Bannered Mare and bought a room for the evening. After a good night's sleep, we will finally address the thieves and traitors of Fellglow Keep!

2023.05.28 11:48 poppywalker Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello again at friend Taylor Swift's concert in MetLifr Stadium

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello again at friend Taylor Swift's concert in MetLifr Stadium
The lovely and well-known singers Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello had discovered in a
previous day after their breakup. They were walking in the New York City by hand-in-hand
as a couple of love birds with fine smiles. So it was rumoured that both of them are back
together again. Shawn ,24 and Camila 26 couple is very popular among people these days
due to this new appearing again. So after their outing with a coffee in NYC, they have come
to the MetLife Stadium. There both Shawn and Camila has been spotted in VIP area of that
Stadium. They seemed as a very lovely couple with their expressions. Also, both faces were
colored with a glamorous smile. As I can feel there was a lovely eye contact between them
as a couple when they are smiling and talking.
They had photographed at that night, while they are dancing together at friend Taylor
Swift’s Eras Tour show. Both of them were dancing to his song very happily by singing the
song. All attention focused on this lovely couple. As I think all the fans of them have felt a
great happiness with their new coming. There Shawn was wearing a white sleeveless shirt
and pants, meanwhile Camila was wearing a black sleeveless leather top and fitted black
skirt with a multi colored pattern. Also she had worn a pair of hoop earrinsg to enhance her
beauty. So Shawn and Camila were very smart with the dresses and their lovely smiles. Also
she has released her hair freely to the down. Another thing is they hadn’t pay their
attention to the cameras around them. May be they wanted a free time without anyone
attention to attach with their feelings. It is said that they went out for a dinner just one day
before this concert. So , that means rumour of Shawn and Camila coming back as lovers may
be a true. They had come out for dinner that day with very comfortable casual. Not only
that last week also they were caught for people and cameras by holding hands tightly. Due
to they are very cute and glamorous couple they highlighted so much, because they
separated before one year ago, and now they are again flying like love birds. That Eras Tour
concert was held in East Rutherford. It is said that many famous characters were there in
that night.
In this way this lovely and famous couple has spotted so many times after famous Coachella
Music and art festival romantic kissing. They had gone for a coffee outing, for a dinner and
this time for a concert. They have danced together too. As I can feel the rumour will be true
in nearly future very soon with these evidences. So, let’s wait and watch. May be Shawn and
Camila want to show off their relationship again, that’s why they behave in public like this
way.

As Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month draws to a close here in the United States, I wanted to share a collection of write-ups featuring the stories of Asians/Pacific Islanders who are currently missing or whose cases have not been resolved. This is an expansion of a piece I post annually and therefore may it sound similar. These are mostly my pieces as well as a few other cases that I have remembered reading about over the last year or two including some cases recommended by readers. Feel free to add other cases which have stuck with you down in the comment section. I hope to garner some exposure for these lesser known cases and links to sources can be found at the bottom or embedded.
Khoi Dang Vu was a deaf American man who went missing from his family’s home in 2007 in Vancouver, Washington. He left on a rainy night without his coat, bike, or any belongings. His case is now considered a homicide and no trace of him has ever been found. True Crime Bullsh*t, an investigative podcast, has surmised that Vu may be a victim of serial killer Israel Keyes. The FBI considers the case a kidnapping. Khoi is of Vietnamese descent. My write up here- https://www.reddit.com/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/g89b2z/what_causes_someone_to_leave_their_home_in_the/

Gary Ridgway aka the Green River Killer terrorized the Pacific Northwest for decades. What many people do not know is that the Green River task force is still in operation. Ridgway confessed to 71 murders, but only around 49 bodies have been found meaning there are more victims waiting to be discovered or reported missing. Two of Gary Ridgway’s known victims were of Asian American or Pacific Islander backgrounds. Marie Malvar, who was of Filipino descent, and Kimi Kai Pitsor who was native Hawaiian, but there may be more. Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau, usually known as Eddie Aikau, a famous lifeguard and surfer, was credited with saving over 500 people at Waimea bay on Oahu’s north shore during his tenure as lifeguard. In fact not one person was reported drowned during Eddie’s shifts at the beach. In 1978, 31 year old Aikau had decided to join the Polynesia Voyaging society, a group who planned to travel from Hawaii to Tahiti using only outrigger canoes. Shortly into their journey one canoe sprung a leak and eventually capsized 12 miles south of Molokai. Eddie paddled on his surfboard towards Lanai in a valiant effort to summon help, but soon disappeared. The US Coast Guard were able to save all the passengers and a huge search was launched but Eddie was never found and is presumed drowned. Hang Lee, a 17 year old girl, went missing from St Paul Minnesota on January 12th 1993. Hang was last seen with a friend Kia “Nikki” Lee. She left home with this friend between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. but when Nikki returned home an hour later, Hang was not with her. Nikki initially told authorities Hang had left with some unidentified young men. She later changed her story and said Hang had gone to a job interview with Nikki's own employer, Mark Steven Wallace, at Wallace's small painting and carpentry business on Iroquois Avenue. Wallace told Nikki that he was looking to hire another employee and she suggested her friend Hang as Hang was looking for a new job. Nikki thought that this request from Wallace was odd as he did not have enough work to hire another employee at that time. Nikki eventually told authorities that she and Hang went to Wallace's place of work and drove around with him in a white truck before switching and driving around in a tan Chevy Cavalier. Wallace dropped Nikki off and then left with Hang in the car. Wallace also told Nikki to not report what happened to the police. After a few interviews with the police Nikki retained an attorney and is no longer cooperating. Wallace denied involvement but also retained an attorney. Wallace is the prime suspect in the disappearance of Hang Lee. He has a record which includes rape, kidnapping, stalking, and drug possession. Hang Lee has never been located and her mother and 13 siblings are still looking for her.Hang is described as a sweet and naïve teenager who is only 17 and 1993. She was 5 ft tall and weighed 90 lb. She was last seen wearing a lightweight black leather jacket, a black t-shirt with "Skid Row" written on the back, black jeans or slacks, sneakers and several pieces of jewelry, including two silver bracelets. She is described as an Asian female with black hair and brown eyes. Her parents moved from Lao (sometimes spelled Laos in the US), and she is Hmong descent. She speaks both English and Hmong. She left behind her purse, a paycheck, and all of her other belongings.Full article here.

In September of 2019, Tampa native Paulino Norberto Del Mundo Japor Jr. decided she wanted to go on a 10 vacation to Cozumel, Mexico but during a layover in Dallas she called her sister and asked for help getting a ticket back to Florida as she had changed her mind about going to Mexico. Her family said on the phone she sounded “desperate” and “incoherent.” She never boarded a flight home or boarded her plane to Mexico. Her last known whereabouts were documented on security tapes from the Dallas airport. Her phone and bank account have not been used since that day and she was never seen again. Ashok Kuman Narain was last seen in Eugene, Oregon in either 1987 or 1988 where he lived with his wife and young daughter after moving from Fiji several years earlier. In 1987 the dismembered body of a pregnant woman and the body of a toddler were found floating nearby in Washington and Oregon. 20 years later these bodies were identified as Raj Mati Narain and Kamnee Koushal, the wife and daughter of Ashok, after Raj’s brother read a story about the unidentified bodies online. He had not heard from his sister since 1987 when Raj’s letters back to her family in Fiji mysteriously stopped. Ashok is wanted for questioning but his whereabouts are unknown. Authorities are looking for a white 1980 Toyota Tercel with the Oregon license plate number KUV762, which disappeared with Ashok and may be connected to Raj and Kamnee's homicides. Both Oregon and Washington authorities are investigating his disappearance. Most sources say the family is of Indo Fijian descent, however, the Charley project now reports that Ashok is of native Fijian descent. Yuan Xia Wang went missing near Washington DC when she was headed for a doctor’s appointment. Yuan had been found at Dulles Airport when a man who was smuggling people into the country was detained and Yuan was one of his charges. Police became suspicious when Yuan who was supposedly a Thai citizen could not speak or understand Thai, but rather spoke Mandarin. Yuan told authorities her parents in Fuzhou, China had paid money for this man to get her into the country using a Thai passport. She was supposed to live with an aunt in the US, but she didn't know where or who this person was so she was placed in foster care for the time being. Other reports say that her smuggler was supposed to take her to a hotel in Alexandria, Virginia. Her foster parents hired a Mandarin speaking babysitter to stay with her until she was enrolled in at a local middle school. Yuan went missing only a few weeks later while on the way to a doctor's appointment. She reportedly got off the school bus and was supposed to take a cab to the doctors but vanished by the time the cab arrived. Although Yuan said she was 12, she was 5’ 6” in height and most people thought she was probably 14-15 at the time of her disappearance. She is of Chinese descent and speaks Mandarin. Police believe she either ran away, was kidnapped by her family members or smugglers, or met with foul play. She may have been seen in Kansas city in 2008. Sadly her dentals, fingerprints, and DNA and not available. https://www.reddit.com/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/jbtixc/yuan_xia_wangmissing_from_lincolnia_virginia/

Faloma Luhk, 10, and Maleina Luhk, 9, disappeared while waiting for their school bus in As Teo, Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, on May 25th, 2011. The girls were last seen sitting on a concrete slab at 6:10 a.m. across the road from their bus stop, only 300 feet from the home they shared with their grandparents. The bus arrived and left without them at 6:30 am but the girls were not reported missing until they didn’t come home after school that day. The 12 mile long island of Saipan was searched thoroughly by friends, family, locals, and the FBI but no trace of the girls or their things were ever found and their disappearance remains one of the most well known mysteries from the Northern Mariana Islands. Both girls are described as Pacific Islander females with brown hair and brown eyes. In 2011, Faloma had bronze colored highlights in her bangs, and Maleina had a large birthmark on her left cheek. She is reported as small and short for her age. A distant family member by marriage, who was later arrested for domestic violence, is the prime suspect in the case. Dong Chull Jung disappeared within minutes in Lakewood, Washington. The 78 year old was residing at the Golden Lion Motel on Tacoma Way in Lakewood, Washington. The establishment has long been a hotbed of criminal activity and violence since at least the 1990s. On average the police responded to incidents at the 24-room hotel over 100 times per year. November 22nd 2003 was one of those times. On that day witnesses called the police after hearing a “disturbance” in Dong’s room. When the authorities arrived, they found a giant pool of blood on the floor as well as Dong’s prescription eyeglasses, but Dong was nowhere to be found. According to the News Tribune, a paper out of Tacoma, one week before Dong’s disappearance he was granted a temporary domestic violence protection order from a Paul C. Jung, who might be Dong’s adult son. In June of 2003, someone named Hae Sung Jung, got a restraining order against Dong. Hae might be the estranged wife of Dong, but this isn’t known for sure. There are vague reports that Dong was having “marital issues'' at the time of his disappearance. Very little information is available in the case. The Golden Lion Inn was finally torn down in 2017 but the fate of the elderly man who resided within remains a mystery. Dong is described as an Asian (Korean) male, with brown eyes and thinning gray hair. He is 5’6'' and weighs 135 lbs. Dong wears prescription eyeglasses but they were left behind when he vanished. If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Dong Jung please call Pierce County Crime Stoppers 253-591-5959. https://charleyproject.org/case/dong-chull-jung

Amber Aiaz and Melissa Fu were mother and daughter who went missing In November, 2019 from Irvine, California. The story of their disappearance and possible kidnapping is complicated. I would suggest reading the story here or here if you are interested in the details but the basic story is this. Amber's husband, Cheng Zhang, reported his wife and stepdaughter missing to the police about a week after they were last seen. He said that a Chinese man and woman came to his door, put something on his face and he passed out. He reported that when he woke up he found blood and evidence of a struggle in the apartment. He also found a note telling him not to report his wife and daughter missing to the police for at least several days and continued to get notes over the next week. He did what the notes instructed for the next several days. When he finally did report his wife and stepdaughter missing, police were skeptical of his story to say the least. Several months later police reported that they had found nothing to indicate that Cheng’s story was untrue, including over 40 hours of interviews with him and 44 days of around the clock surveillance. In the past Amber had told acquaintances that she was a very wealthy woman who had millions of dollars to her name. While this was not true, authorities speculated that Amber may have been kidnapped for ransom only for her captors to find out that her story of riches was nothing more than a farce. Amber's money has not been touched in either her Chinese or American bank accounts. Both mother and daughter left behind their passports and there's no indication that either of them have entered China.
Amber is described as a 34-year-old Chinese woman who is 5'9 and weighed 180 lb. She has black hair and brown eyes. When last seen she was wearing a black shirt, a black vest, black fitted pants with white writing on them, and light colored shoes. She may use the name Mei Yi Wu or Meiyi W. Wu.
Melissa is described as a 12 or 13 year old Chinese female with black hair and brown eyes. She was 5 '11” in height and weighed about 200 lb. She was last seen wearing a black tracksuit.
Cheng described the unidentified abductors as a Chinese couple in their 40s. Both had average builds. The woman was reported to be about 5’8” and had her black hair tied back in a bun. The man was of average build about 190 lb. and 5 '10”. He had short black hair. The couple may have been driving a black Cadillac and they may have been seen near the apartment complex that day by other neighbors.
Destiny Dee Sanith was last seen by her family on March 3rd, 2022 in Williamstown New Jersey. At about 2:30 in the afternoon on March 3rd, she asked her mom if she could borrow the car to go visit a friend in South Philadelphia. When Destiny did not return in the evening her mother learned that she never made it to her friend's house that day. New Jersey police had contact with Destiny at about 5:20 a.m. on March 4th In Folsom New Jersey. Destiny and her car were near a strip mall at the time. What exactly happened is not clear but police reported they helped Destiny move her car into a parking spot and then gave her a ride to a Wawa convenience store about a mile up the road. Destiny's family has reported that they have surveillance video of Destiny entering and then later leaving the Wawa store after purchasing a drink. At about 9:00 a.m. she was seen leaving the store with a drink crossing the road, turning into another convenience store and then going behind the building and out of view. This is the last known sighting and location of Destiny Sanith. On March 5th when Destiny had still not returned home she was reported missing to the police and her family learned about her interaction with the police on the morning of March 4th. Destiny has not been seen or heard from since.
Destiny is described as an Asian female 27 years old, who is 5'6 and height and weighs about 160 lb. She reportedly has short wavy brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing black sweatpants, a black Nike sweatshirt, a backpack, white and red Air Jordan sneakers, wearing earrings and carrying a coffee. She has a tattoo of the Virgo symbol on her right hand. Her nickname is Dara. Her family has set up a GoFundMe to help find Destiny and hire a private investigator. Full article here.
Myong Keun Noah, who went by the nickname Mike, was seen by his family at around 7:00 p.m. on May 1st, 2007 in San Bruno, CA. Mike owned a private car company called E Limousine Services that he ran out of his home. That evening Mike told his son that he had to leave to pick up a 7:30 p.m fare. He did not tell his son where he was picking up the fare. Mike's wife was at an evening class at the time. Neither he or his black Lincoln town car was ever seen again. His car was new and didn't have permanent license plates, but had the transportation carrier permit number TCP 18525 printed on the back bumper. It had a transponder that registers when it enters San Francisco International Airport, but the transponder did not register a trip to the airport that evening. A search of parking areas at both the San Francisco Airport and the Oakland Airport did not locate Mike or his car. Mike's bank account and his phone have not been used since May 1st, 2007. Mike had no history of running away or dropping out of sight, he had no reported mental health issues, no personal problems, and no enemies. Police report that they are baffled by his disappearance. K.L. Campbell J.:
REASONS FOR SENTENCE
A. Overview
[1] On May 12, 2023, after a trial spanning many weeks, the accused, Saaid Mohiadin, was found guilty, by a jury, of the first-degree, “planned and deliberate” murder of Jerome Belle. The offence took place in Toronto, on the afternoon of March 19, 2019. The accused was arrested for this offence nearly a year later, on March 12, 2020, and he has been in custody ever since. Indeed, he was arrested and kept in custody even before then in relation to an unrelated matter.
[2] In any event, the accused must now be sentenced to the mandatory minimum sentence of life imprisonment, without being eligible for release on parole for 25 years, pursuant to the combination of ss. 235 and 745(a) of the Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, chap. C-46. That is the custodial sentence that will be imposed upon the accused.
[3] Typically, the imposition of such a sentence does not require any sort of detailed explanation. The sentence is a mandatory minimum sentence and must, as a matter of law, be imposed, regardless of the personal circumstances of the accused, the positions of the parties, or any other potentially relevant sentencing factors.
[4] The authorities are clear that this mandatory minimum sentence is not in violation of any constitutional right protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. See, for example: R. v. Mitchell (1987), 1987 CanLII 128 (NS CA), 39 C.C.C. (3d) 141 (N.S.C.A.); R. v. Cairns (1989), 1989 CanLII 7224 (BC CA), 51 C.C.C. (3d) 90 (B.C.C.A.) at pp. 103-104; R. v. Luxton, 1990 CanLII 83 (SCC), [1990] 2 S.C.R. 711, 58 C.C.C. (3d) 449; R. v. Kay, 1990 ABCA 317; 59 C.C.C. (3d) 515; R. v. Lefebvre (1992), 1992 CanLII 3937 (QC CA), 72 C.C.C. (3d) 162 (Que.C.A.); leave denied (1992), 72 C.C.C. (3d) vi (S.C.C.); R. v. Newborn, 2020 ABCA 120, 390 C.C.C. (3d) 86, at paras. 28-40, 57-92; leave denied: [2020] S.C.C.A. No. 282.
[5] This is the second murder conviction of the accused. However, s. 745.51 of the Criminal Code, which provides that where an accused is convicted of multiple murders, the trial judge may, under certain circumstances, impose consecutive periods of parole ineligibility in relation to each murder, has been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of Canada. See: R. v. Bissonnette, 2022 SCC 23.
[6] In the result, given that the accused will be eligible for release on parole after serving 25 years in prison in connection with this sentence of life imprisonment, I thought it appropriate to provide these reasons for sentence, at least for the future assistance of the parole authorities. Needless to say, perhaps, this is not a “typical” case – even for those few offenders who have been convicted of the most serious offence known to the criminal law. That is so, because, as I have already suggested, this accused, despite his relatively young age of 32 years, has now been convicted of two entirely separate first-degree murders, in addition to all of the other crimes displayed on his unenviable criminal record.
[7] Indeed, in my view, the accused is an inherently dangerous individual, who poses a special danger to the public – and this factor is one that should properly be taken into account by any member of the parole authorities when considering his potential release back into civilized society at any point in time in the future.
B. The Facts of This First-Degree Murder Case
[8] In conjunction with the verdict unanimously reached by the jury in this case, I am satisfied, beyond any reasonable doubt, that the Crown has established all of the following facts in this case.
[9] Jerome Belle was shot to death on the afternoon of March 19, 2019, at approximately 3:25 p.m., near the intersection of Randolph Avenue and Bloom Street in the city of Toronto. This happened while Mr. Belle was in the company of another individual, Ryan Garballa, who was out walking his dog, and who was himself physically unharmed in the shooting, notwithstanding the fact that he was right beside Mr. Belle when the shooting commenced.
[10] The accused had earlier planned and deliberated over the killing of Mr. Belle, and then, on the afternoon of March 19, 2019, he saw an opportunity to put his plan into action, and he then executed that plan. Indeed, in my view, the circumstances surrounding the killing of Jerome Belle really permit no other reasonable conclusion – once the alibi evidence is rejected.
[11] The accused had made arrangements earlier that day (March 19, 2019) to have his friend, Ms. Abdi, come and pick him up in her car. Accordingly, she could, unwittingly, provide the accused with the necessary “getaway” car following the killing. Indeed, based upon her evidence, that is, in fact, exactly what the accused did. He took advantage of her friendship, and her willingness to drive him to different locations around the city, as he wished, to enlist her assistance in escaping from the scene of the murder.
[12] At the time of the killing, the accused was dressed in a “white hoodie” sweater, and he had pulled the hood of the sweater up over his head, and had drawn the hood tightly around his face, so that little of his face could be seen. This individual is, fortuitously, seen getting out of a white Mercedes Benz vehicle, parked relatively close to the geographic location of the killing, just minutes before the shooting, and is seen again, quickly returning to that same vehicle just minutes after the gun shots were fired, killing Jerome Belle. Indeed, this aspect of the case was helpfully recorded on a surveillance camera attached to a passing Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) “Wheel Trans” bus – but the actual killing happened just outside the scope of this surveillance video camera.
[13] In his evidence, Mr. Garballa explained how the man wearing the “white hoodie” – the accused – approached he and Mr. Belle and how the man in the “white hoodie” immediately shot Mr. Belle, from relatively close range, numerous times. The shooter then quickly returned in the direction of the parked white Mercedes Benz vehicle. Mr. Belle was pronounced dead a short time later at a Toronto hospital, despite the speedy medical efforts of the paramedics who arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting.
[14] Given the speed of the shooting, and the fact that no words were exchanged between the accused and Mr. Belle, there could be no realistic suggestion that the killing was provoked, or accidental, or done in self-defence. Indeed, there was no such suggestion by defence counsel for the accused. Clearly, the killing of Mr. Belle by the accused was intentional.
[15] The driver of the white Mercedes Benz vehicle was a young woman named Sagal Abdi. The jury was obviously impressed by her testimony, and clearly accepted it as truthful, significantly corroborated as it was. Ms. Abdi provided direct evidence in this case, clearly identifying the accused as the man wearing the “white hoodie,” and who is seen getting out of, and then getting back in to, her car, right before, and then right after, the shooting. Ms. Abdi was a close personal friend of the accused at the time of the shooting, and communicated with him on a daily basis, and often drove him to and from his nearby home and around to various different locations, around the time of the shooting.
[16] Ms. Abdi testified that, on the afternoon of March 19, 2019, she picked up the accused at his nearby home at the foot of Bloom Street, at his request, and she then followed his directions to where she parked her vehicle, near the intersection of Perth Avenue and Randolph Avenue. She understood, from what the accused told her, that he was going home to retrieve something he forgot to bring with him. While Ms. Abdi had offered to drive him home for this purpose, the accused told her to just wait in her car for his return. She did.
[17] Many of the relevant events leading to the killing (but not the killing itself) were captured on the various surveillance cameras in the area. Viewed cumulatively and in sequence, the police-seized video recordings, together with the accompanying viva voce witness testimony, prove all of the following events beyond a reasonable doubt:
• At approximately 3:17 p.m. on March 19, 2019, two men walked down a staircase on the west side of the building located at 140 Perth Avenue, and headed south, down to near where Bloom Street turns the corner and changes from being a north-south road to being an east-west road. The accused lived in a residence just across the street, on the south side of Bloom Street (even though the municipal address of the building was on nearby Perth Avenue).
• At approximately 3:22 p.m. on March 19, 2019, two men (and a dog) leave one of the apartment buildings in the area via the “south stairway.” These two men were clearly Mr. Belle and Mr. Garballa. Further, once they exited the building, they were very close to the accused’s residence, and could easily have been seen by the accused from his home. Indeed, I have no doubt that they were seen by the accused.
• At approximately 3:22 p.m. on March 19, 2019, a white Mercedes Benz (matching the description of the vehicle driven by Ms. Abdi) is travelling southbound on Bloom Street (from Randolph Avenue), heading in the direction of the accused’s residence. Ms. Abdi confirmed that she was alone in this vehicle as she travelled to pick up the accused.
• At approximately 3:23 p.m. on March 19, 2019, a white automobile is parked on the east-west section of Bloom Street, near the front of the accused’s residence. Ms. Abdi confirmed that this was where she always parked her car in order to pick up the accused from his residence, as she had done many times in the recent past.
• At approximately 3:23 p.m. on March 19, 2019, the white car moved in an easterly direction along Bloom Street, towards Perth Avenue. Ms. Abdi explained that the accused called her on the phone and told her to pull her vehicle up further on Bloom Street to pick him up. The accused had never done this before. The accused did this, in my view, so that he would not be seen, by Mr. Belle, leaving his residence.
• When the accused left his residence on the afternoon of March 19, 2019, he clearly had a loaded gun in his possession – the very firearm he used to kill Mr. Belle just a few minutes later, according to the combined testimony of Ms. Abdi and Mr. Garballa.
• The white Mercedes Benz vehicle, turned left (north) on Perth Avenue, from Bloom Street, and then turned left again (west) on Randolph Avenue, where it parked near the intersection. According to Ms. Abdi, the accused directed her to this location and, during their brief time together in her vehicle, and before he first exited her vehicle, the accused took off his black “puffer” jacket. Thereafter, he was wearing the “white hoodie” sweater. When the accused left her vehicle, he was wearing this “white hoodie,” with the hood pulled up over his head and drawn tightly around his face, so as to conceal his identity.
• The accused had to have seen Mr. Belle heading northbound on Bloom Street, with Mr. Garballa and his dog, as within a couple of minutes of being picked up by Ms. Abdi, the accused directed Ms. Abdi to drive to a location (and park her car) geographically near where he anticipated Mr. Belle would be – if Mr. Belle and Mr. Garballa continued walking northbound on Bloom Street (in the direction they were headed when they were seen by the accused).
• At approximately 3:24 p.m. on March 19, 2019, two men (Mr. Garballa and Mr. Belle) were walking northbound on Bloom Street, walking a dog. By approximately 3:25 p.m. those two men had walked northbound up beside the playground structure near the intersection of Bloom Street and Randolph Avenue. They eventually continued walking north, off the screen, to the geographical area where the killing of Mr. Belle took place. Mr. Garballa explained that, when they got there, the man wearing the “white hoodie,” ran toward them and, with no verbal exchange at all, the man in the “white hoodie” (the accused) just started shooting Mr. Belle. Once he had shot Mr. Belle multiple times, the accused then turned around and ran back towards the parked white Mercedes Benz of Ms. Abdi. Mr. Belle was just left, dying on the ground. He was pronounced dead a short time later at a Toronto hospital.
[18] After the accused returned to her parked white Mercedes Benz vehicle (after he had shot Mr. Belle), the accused told Ms. Abdi to drive away, and he directed her, ultimately, to a parking lot in the area of Jane Street and Finch Avenue, some considerable distance away.
[19] As Ms. Abdi testified, during their travels to this location, the accused told her a number of things, including: (1) He said: “This is the hood – shootings happen every day;” (2) He told her to “get rid of [her] vehicle,” and that she could not drive the car anymore, for at least a couple of weeks; and (3) he told her that they would “have to get married so that [she] could not testify against [him].”
[20] Ms. Abdi testified that, a day or two later, she saw a “Snapchat” message from the accused and ultimately saw a “snap” video that had been posted, which included the accused and some of his friends talking and laughing about a “headshot.” According to Ms. Abdi, in this video, the accused had dyed the tips of his dreadlocks from “red to black” (so they looked different than they did the day before). Ms. Abdi testified that she communicated later that same day with the accused, indicating that she was “upset” in that it had become “evident what he had done,” without “any remorse” and asking why he would “drag [her] into this.” The accused responded, by text, to the effect: “You don’t understand – it was kill or be killed – this guy was standing in front of my Mom’s house where my mom and my niece lived.”
[21] During the trial, defence counsel for the accused, advanced the theory that the accused was not, in fact, responsible for the killing of Mr. Belle. Indeed, the defence adduced evidence of an “alibi,” suggesting that the accused was inside his parent’s residence for the entire day on March 19, 2019, and, therefore, could not have killed Mr. Belle. Indeed, the defence called a number of witnesses in support of this “alibi,” including the accused’s mother (Idman Said) and his brother (Suleyman Mohiadin). By their verdict, the jury clearly rejected this evidence in its entirety, as incredible, as the jury was perfectly entitled to do.
[22] While the defence did not expressly argue, to the jury, that this was a second-degree murder, not a first-degree murder, at the close of the case for the Crown, the defence brought a non-suit application, contending that the Crown had led no evidence that this was a “planned and deliberate” first-degree murder on the part of the accused. I dismissed that application. See: R. v. Mohiadin, 2023 ONSC 2520. I concluded, essentially, that there was, indeed, evidence of “planning and deliberation” on the part of the accused, and that the jury could reasonably conclude that this was a “planned and deliberate” first-degree murder on the part of the accused. Ultimately, the jury reached that reasonable conclusion.
[23] Nevertheless, I note in passing that, even if the accused had only been found guilty of having committed a second-degree murder in connection with his killing of Mr. Belle, he would still have had to receive the same sentence that must be imposed today, given the operation of s. 745(b) of the Criminal Code – which treats a second murder conviction (of any degree) as a first-degree murder for purposes of sentencing (i.e. requiring the imposition of the mandatory minimum sentence of life imprisonment without parole eligibility for 25 years).
C. The Criminal Record of the Accused
[24] As I noted in an earlier ruling, the accused already has a significant criminal record, starting in 2012, which displays convictions for a number of criminal offences, including the unauthorized possession of a firearm, failing to comply with a recognizance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, assault with a weapon, failing to attend court, threatening to cause death or bodily harm, and obstructing a peace officer.
[25] Most significantly, and most recently, on December 6, 2022, the accused was convicted of the offence of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment, without eligibility for release on parole until he has served 25 years of that sentence.
[26] In these circumstances, the accused would appear to be precisely the kind of offender who was designed to be addressed by the enactment of s. 745.51 of the Criminal Code. In other words, the accused has committed two entirely separate incidents of first-degree murder. Yet, while he has been found criminally responsible for the separate killings of two different individuals, at different times, and in different locations, his sentences of life imprisonment (and the coincident periods of parole ineligibility of 25 years) must be served concurrently – resulting now in the imposition of a sentence that is not significantly longer for the commission of his second murder. Needless to say, perhaps, the accused is very fortunate in this regard – whether he knows it or not.
D. The Victim Impact Evidence
[27] The Victim Impact Evidence in this case (Exhibit #1) was prepared by Nichole Belle, Veronica Belle, Chanelle Belle and Cherelle Belle. This document outlines the devastating personal consequences that the Belle Family has suffered as a result of the murder of Jerome Belle by the accused. While I am unable to accurately detailed all of those circumstances, it is fair to observed that the Belle Family has been truly overwhelmed by this senseless murder, immediately (and forever) depriving them of a much-loved brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, friend and son.
E. Conclusion – The Sentence Imposed
[28] In the result, the accused is now sentenced to life imprisonment. He shall not be eligible for release on parole until he has served at least 25 years of this custodial sentence.
[29] There are also three incidental sentencing orders that, in my view, must also be made in the circumstances of this case.
[30] First, pursuant to ss. 109(1)(a) and 109(3) of the Criminal Code, I order that the accused is prohibited from the possession of any firearm, cross-bow, restricted weapon, ammunition, and explosive substance for the rest of his life.
[31] Second, as the accused has been found guilty of committing a “primary designated offence” as defined by s. 487.04(a) of the Criminal Code, pursuant to s. 487.051(1) of the Criminal Code, I make an order in Form 5.03, to have samples of bodily substances taken from the accused for purposes of forensic DNA analysis.
[32] Third, pursuant to s. 743.21(1) there will be an order prohibiting the accused from having any communication, direct or indirect, with Nichole Belle, Chanelle Belle, Cherelle Kent, Veronica Belle, and/or Sagal Abdi, for the rest of his life.

2023.05.25 18:39 AdventureMaterials The Third Son - Part 1 - An OSR/D&D Style Ironsworn Game

Beginning the story of Gethin Oyvind, a knight-errant, and his band as they seek treasure and fame in the land of Ederfast (the name came on the cool map I found online, so I’m rolling with it). It’s going to be a D&D-inspired, party-based dungeon crawl using Ironsworn and Starforge rules, mix-and-matched as I see fit, but tending toward Ironsworn.
The Party: Sir Gethin Oyvind E-1 H-2 I-3 S-1 W-2 Assets: Commander, Ironclad (light armor), Empowered (Knight Errant). Equipment: chain armor, sword, shield, crossbow Vows: Become worthy of the Oyvind family name (epic): 0.0
Bonds (all randomly generated):
  1. Baggi the Carpenter.
  2. Frej the Mercenary.
  3. Tessa the Wheel-maker.
These seem like unlikely allies of a Knight-Errant, but I’m interpreting them to be those whom he knows and trusts in this region. In this world, adventuring knights are relatively common, and all tend to migrate to other regions in search of fame, fortune, and glory. “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown…” As a third son, this is even more true. All of Gethin’s brothers are known to the court and beloved of their father; Gethin has come east to earn the right to bear his own name, and he refuses to return home until he has done so.
Because this is a D&D style game, my PC won’t be solo, but the rest of the characters will not be represented by Ironsworn PCs. Instead, they are represented by the party contained within the “Commander” perk. As it stands, they are:
  1. Sola the Cruel. Workcrew overseer.
  2. Inguna the Naive. A trapper.
  3. Bjarn the Jealous. A falconer.
  4. Somhaile the Tactless. A thief.
All were randomly generated, and I hope we’ll get to see some personality (out of the ones who survive). Note that I am back to using the default Ironsworn stat spread; the more powerful heroic version just didn’t feel right for an old-school D&D adventure.
And now we begin the adventure, throwing ourselves right into the thick of it. In keeping with the IS ethos, Gethin is not an abject neophyte. He is competent and well-equipped, although how well his men-at-arms are trained is something that we have yet to see. This is not his first adventure, and his previous exploits have won him some friends in Longhill, a major city in the region.
Reminder: You can find links to every one of my solo session game reports on my Campaign Logs page.
What is the trouble in Longhill? Resources/Depleted. What is the city like? Blocked/Darkness.
Longhill. A sprawling city set in the lee of the western hills. Already, long shadows darken the city’s narrow streets. “It’s good to be back,” Somhaile the thief says as they pass through the city gates. Gethin disagrees, but he holds his tongue.
Which bond approaches? Tessa the Wheel-maker. What does she say? Affect/Duty – SweaOpportunity
Gethin leads the band north through the gates, to the stable house. Tessa, the [oracle=] hot-tempered wheelwright and stablemaster, is working in the yard. After Bjarn and Inguna unload the donkey’s saddlebags, he leads it over to the small fenced yard.
“It did its job?” the woman asks as she hands him back his retainer.
“Well enough,” Gethin replies. “What’s news?”
“Almost better you didn’t bring in five mouths to feed. Tensions are high in Longhill.”
“Why’s that?”
“The river’s dried up,” the woman says simply.
“It isn’t,” Gethin replies. He’d seen it as they passed in from the east.
“Not the water,” she snorts. “The fishing. Nobody’s caught anything in days. The market’s closed up. Never happened afore. A curse, no doubt.” She looks doubtful anyway. “Or so they say. I don’t know about curses, but it’s something suspicious, and that’s for certain. Fish don’t just up and stop, not all at once.”
He pauses, glances back at his band and sees Sola giving Somhaile an earful after the thief–scout, Gethin reminds himself–apparently tried to leave off without hauling his share of the luggage.
“The boys could use a night or two in town,” Gethin says, “but you think there’s any coin to be made here?”
Tessa laughs. “If you could get the fish swimming again, the baron’d give you the robe off his own back.”
Swear an Iron Vow (Dangerous) to discover the source of the fishing issues: [Weak Hit: 1 + 2 + 1 = 4 vs 4 3]. +1m (now 3).
Gethin grins as he leaves the yard and lets one of the band lead him to a nearby tavern. They secure a pair of rooms on the second floor and then return to the common room. He drops a purseful of silver in the middle of the table. “Drinks are on me,” he says as the silver is immediately divided into four piles. “But keep yourselves ready. We might have more work in a couple of days.”
Grim faces stare back at him.
Paying work, this time,” he clarifies.
“I’ll drink to that,” Inguna cheers, and the rest of them take him up on it.
Gethin doesn’t drink, though–he has work to do. He heads out into the night and makes his way toward the river docks.
Gather Information: [Weak Hit: 6 + 2 + 0 = 8 vs 5 10]. +1m (now 4). Twist: charge/opinion
The fish-markets are quiet at night. Normally. Tonight, he can hear the ruckus from several blocks off. Soon, the light of torch fires become visible. A platform has been raised, and a weather-worn man is standing atop it, preaching–shouting–at the crowd below. The fishermen listen, rapt, as he roars that the river god has taken back its bounty because of their sin.
Is this bad for Gethin (75%)? Yes, but… easy to get away
It doesn’t take long before the priest’s laundry-list of sinners begins to include foreigners and, to Gethin’s dismay, the gentry. He glances down at his outfit–the boiled leather vest is unassuming, but the laced sleeves beneath it give him away. He slips back into the darkness and returns to the inn.
Has anything happened to the crew (25%)? No.
The entire lot is drunk when he returns to the inn, but Sola has them (mostly) in hand. He pulls her aside, warns her not to let them leave the tavern grounds that night, and then heads upstairs to sleep.
Are the party ready to head out the next day (33%)? No.
Dawn comes early. The four members of his crew are sprawled across every flat surface in their room that isn’t his own bed. He rises and dresses quickly, even throwing on his chain and strapping on sword and shield. He kicks Sola awake as he leaves. “Don’t let them out,” he warns again. “I’ll be back before nightfall.” Then he heads out into the city.
Anything drastic happen overnight (10%)? No.
The streets are calm. Whatever he felt brewing in the market-district last night, it hasn’t come to a head yet. He returns to the stables to find Tessa.
Is she there (33%)? No.
She’s not there, but an apprentice is. Gethin tosses him a couple of coppers to get his horse ready so he can leave early.
Secure an Advantage (Heart): [Strong Hit: 5 + 2 + 0 = 7 vs 4 1]. +2m (now 6).
The boy takes the coins eagerly and gets the horse ready. In moments, Gethin is mounted and riding out through the city gates. He turns his horse north and heads toward the river–and beyond it, the lake.
Face Danger (Wits) to check for encounter along the way: [Miss: 5 + 2 + 0 = 7 vs 8 9]. What do we find, and where? Corruption has spread further than thought. Mysterious/Foothills.
It isn’t long before he is in the foothills. Soon, the trail rises and comes to a crest. The river and its docks lay before him, winding away northward toward the distant lake. Even here he can tell that something is wrong. The smell of it–like a days-dead fish left outside, but not so close that it is overpowering. Something is definitely wrong.
Any fishermen in their boats (80%)? No, but…
The normally-busy waterways are empty. As far as he can see to the north and the east, the waters are empty. But there, by a sandy shore, he sees a young woman readying a small rowboat to go into the water. He spurs his horse forward and rides to her.
What does she say? Knowing – Account – Fame.
“I know you,” the woman states as Gethin rides up beside her. “You’re that foreign dandy. The gentleman-adventurer.”
“We prefer Knight Errant,” Gethin responds. “Who are you? And where is everyone?”
Compel (heart): [Miss: 4 + 2 + 0 = 6 vs 7 6]
The woman snorts. “As if I’d tell you anything, what with the curse your lot brought on us!” She pointedly turns her back to the knight and pushes her boat into the river.
Gethin reflects on the encounter on the ride back to the inn. Tessa was right–things are getting bad in Longhill. But that just means the rewards will be all the greater when he can…put the fish back in the river? He shakes his head. Maybe his crew will have some idea of what to do.
[Mark Progress: Bring back the fishing :2 boxes]
What has the party been up to while he was gone? Communicate/Vengeance.
The party is still holed up in the tavern when he returns. Somhaile was the only one who ventured out, and she returned quickly, bearing word that tensions are high in the city. Talk in the city is indeed turning against outsiders.
They spend another night and prepare themselves to head out the next morning.
Any event in the night (10%)? Yes, change/idea.
That night, hundreds of people march through the streets of Longhill as Gethin and the others watch from the window of their second-floor room. The bedraggled priest leads them, chanting that the time has come for repentance and cleansing, for a turning away from foreign influences.
Is the local lord a native of Longhill (50%)? No, but…
The line seems to wind toward the gates of the keep, but the guards there stand strong against the crowd. They mill about for a few hours before dispersing into the night.
The next morning, Gethin rouses the party early and leads them out. Somhaile and Bjarn grumble, but Sola keeps them in line while Gethin goes to the stables to see about renting horses for the party.
Secure an Advantage (wits): [Weak Hit: 2 + 2 + 0 = 4 vs 3 10] +1m (now 7).
Unfortunately, none are available to rent. However, the stable has a few mules available, and Gethin rents one of those for hauling supplies. While the stable boy fetches Gethin’s horse and the rented mule, Gethin breaks the news to the party. They fuss about it, but they all remember the events of the night and are too eager to leave to make too much trouble.
A few minutes later, they are out of the city and heading north toward the river. They angle northeast, trying to put some distance between themselves and the docks in case they run into any angry locals. Gethin then spurs his horse on ahead, hoping to scout some of the terrain and gain some sense of which direction to search.
Gather Information: [Weak Hit: 2 + 2 + 0 = 4 vs 4 3] +1m (now 8), but introduce danger. Danger: Escort/Vengeance.
He rides east along the bank for a mile or two, until the river bend and trees conceal the city behind him entirely. He scans the bank as he rides, but he sees nothing of note–and sees no one–until he hears the sound of movement in the water.
A boat comes around the bend ahead of him, rowed by a pair of fisherman while a third man stands with a bow in his hands. He shouts when he spots Gethin and has the rowers push them toward the shore.
Face Danger (Heart): [Weak Hit: 5 + 2 + 0 = 7 vs 4 10]. -1m (now 7).
Gethin calls out to them, unwilling to turn and run from a bunch of riled-up yokels. The captain of the boat has the gall to ask him for his name and purpose, and even goes so far as to demand that he disarm himself! It takes some time–more than he cared to spend–but Gethin eventually cows the aggressive captain and puts the man in his proper place before sending him off down the river.
It’s late morning by the time Gethin returns to the party. He explains that the smell of rotting fish–weak near the hills–does not dissipate up river. He suggests they head that way to search at first. The others agree and they turn toward the east and head upriver.
I’ll be handling the passage up-river as a troublesome Tanglewood delve with a Haunted (randomly selected) theme.
The river wends its was toward the sea through a low valley cut between the hills. Trees grow near the water, and eventually they thicken into a strip of dark woodland. All of the party are unnerved by the sight of the twisted trees, though none is willing to mention it.
[Delve the Depths: Mark progress twice and Reveal a Danger.] [Mark Progress: Haunted Forest :6 boxes] Danger: Denizen hunts
All right, this should be interesting. A ‘denizen’ is surely not the same as a person in this haunted forest. So I have to choose between a ghost and a monster of some kind. I know a ghost wouldn’t be literally hunting, so I’m going to roll on the Monstrosity table:
Monster: person-sized – crustacean – horns/tusks – parasitic
Several miles pass in nervous watch before they come across the thing–something like a crawdad or a lobster, but the size of a large man. A hard shell covers its back, and a wicked proboscis extends from the center of its face like a spear.
Face Danger (Shadow): [Strong Hit: 6 + 1 + 0 = 7 vs 3 1]. +1m (now 8).
Fortunately, the sound of wet slurping alerts the party before they see the beast. Somhaile sneaks forward and returns with a pale face. Her hands flutter as she tells them of the thing she saw, of the sight and sound of it as it buried its foul mouth in the bloated corpse of a deer and drank the ichor.
Do the others want to fight it (15%)? No.
There is no margin in risking one’s life to kill strange beasts in unfamiliar woods, so the party votes unanimously to give the thing wide berth. They cut inland a few hundred yards and pass on until they are sure they have left it behind. After that, though, all of them are even more cautious of what they might find–or what might find them.
End of Part 1.

2023.05.25 12:51 suzzface Where Did They Crash: A Definitive Deep Dive

Where Did They Crash: A Definitive Deep Dive
In celebration of the finale of S2, I thought I'd post the theory I've been working on about where they might have crashed (or my best guess). This will be picture heavy, measured in miles, and tries to account for the movie magic. Anyone with better knowledge of the area/Canada/planes, please feel free to weigh in!
So let's start with a list of things we know:
Promo Material: All the promo stuff states they're in the Northern Ontario Wilderness.
The Flight (1x01): They're making a detour, and will have a great view of the Northen Rockies.
The Rescue (2x01): A news anchor says during the rescue scene from 1998, that the girls were found 600 miles north of the designated flight path.
The Area: We see a large snowy mountain range from the 2nd Winter flash forward at the end of the pilot (no timestamp bc mine have been incorrect before due to being outside the US and using a different platform). Lots of pine trees, a lake, and a fuck ton of snow. (The lake/cabin scenes are all filmed just outside of Vancouver, for reference).
Here is a typical flightpath from Teterboro airport in NJ, to Seatac in Seattle WA:
NJ to Seattle
However, we know there's a detour north that ensures the girls a good view of the N. Rockies, and the above flight path takes them ~100 miles south of the southern most area of the N. Rockies (rough guesstimation based on google maps terrain). The YJs could probably still see them, but I'm not sure if that counts as a 'great view'. For the purpose of my theory, I've shifted the flight path ~100 miles* north, which takes the flight path into Canadian airspace.
(*this is a rough number, it could be a more or less than this! The captain said the diversion was due to a storm system, which are only usually about 15-20 miles wide, but by adding 100 miles, the new flight path would have flown directly over the very bottom of the N. Rockies, ensuring the promised great view.)

Part One: Picking A Side

The original statement, which was released when the pilot was first ordered, before it was filmed and the rest of season 1 was written, places the show in Northern Ontario, the Eastern side of Canada. However, the Rockies are a thousand miles away on the West side. My theory is the writers chose N. Ontario to begin with, but by the time it came to film, they'd changed the location of the crash to B.C. Here's why we can rule out Ontario, and place them in the Rockies definitively.
  1. The aforementioned mountain ranges. Ontario has some high elevation peaks, but nothing like the Rockies, or the dark mountains we're shown in the pilot.
  2. 600 miles north of the flight path in Ontario would have them in an area that's full of lakes and is relatively flat.
This is a distance measure of 600 miles from the original flight path, which lands them just above a place called "Big Trout Lake". Any further north, and they're in danger of being able to see Hudson Bay (big water source top centre-right). It's part of the arctic ocean, and there are polar bears in the area, namely the west point of the little dip at the bottom of the bay (aptly named "polar bear provincial park").
600 Miles North Measure for Ontario
That area on maps looks like this:
Mostly flat with lots of little lakes - no match (imo).
  1. The Kurt Loder MTV News promo.
Circumstantial evidence in my ❌No Ontario❌ defense. Posted to the official Showtime youtube account shortly before the s2 premiere, It features 90s Kurt Loder discussing the Missing Yellowjackets, 3 months after their disappearance. It also features this map:

For those who cbf going to youtube
This might indicate that they have no idea what the flight path was and that the plane stopped communication early on in the flight, but I took it to mean that this was where the plane was last confirmed to be, until the ? appears while the plane is nearing the Saskatchewan/Alberta border and the plane starts fading out. This puts the flight way past Ontario, ruling it out entirely (to ME!).
Rule out Ontario, add in the N. Rocky Mountains, you've got yourself a British Columbia based Crash site.
Winner: It's a West Side Story.

Part Two: Picking a Latitude

If we take the flight path (original or modified), and we take the 2x01 reveal that they're around 600 miles north of that, and we add in how close they are to the N. Rockies as shown in the pilot, we end up with a rough area of a few hundred miles of where the plane might have crashed.
Here's the end of the AQ ritual scene at the end of the pilot:
That's a lot of mountains, plus the sun rising in the east.
In order to be that close to/in the mountains like that, they need to be squarely in British Columbia (BC/Albertans can confirm or deny this for me, I have only been to Vancouver and S. Ontario).
This is the north east corner of BC, showing a sliver of NWT at the top, and Alberta to the right. I have the terrain overlay on, to show the difference between the flat land on the right and the northern rocky mountains high on the left.
N.E. B.C.
There are provincial parks in the area, and highway 97 wends it's way through. To have the sun rise on the east behind the Rockies, the crash either took place on the very edge, or they're somewhere in the middle (I don't really have a preference).
Notice the 97 shield on the vertical road - it's right above a place called Trutch. This is relevant because:
600 miles north of altered flight path.
If we take the flight path, and the 100 miles north I tacked on to represent the altered flight-path, and we measure 600 miles north of that that point with the other end being near the rockies, it comes out right here:

Good ol trutch.
It has a latitude of 57.8°, which I'm going to round up to 58° for fun (bear in mind that 100mi and 600mi are rough/rounded numbers, so it could be anywhere from 57° to 59° latitude, or higher. I'm doing so much guesstimating you wouldn't even believe).
If you compare this to the screenshot of Trout Lake in N. Ontario from Part 1: Both have the terrain filter turned on! Ontario is not mountainous in the same way the B.C. is mountainous.
North East of the 600mi point is Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park, which has pictures if you click on it. Here are a couple:

In Winter (those mountains are similarly dark and snowy!)

In Summer (snowless, but shows off them ranges).
In my extremely humble and potentially wrong opinion, this general area fits with what we know of the crash site pretty perfectly.
Winner: It's 98° 58° give or take.

Part Three: Finding A Lake

The biggest landmark we have besides mountains is the lake. The real lake they filmed at is Stave Lake, just northwest of Vancouver.
Here it is in the show:
Omg Stave Lake you look amazing

And here it is on Google maps:

She's long, skinny, and surrounded by steep terrain.
This gives us a rough idea of what kind of lake we're looking for.
Lakes around the 58th parallel are all long and skinny, like our mate Stave, so there are lots we can choose from.
Here is my best Pick:
58.2, I'll allow it
These are the Tuchodi lakes. They're around 40 miles North West of the Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park, and only 0.2° to 0.4° north of the latitude decided on in Part 2. She's ~11 miles long, and skinny, just like Stave. Here are some pictures I yoinked from google maps:

someone went boating there in 2017 thank you to that man
The shore is not the same rocky pebbles as stave, unfortunately.
Wow !
It's not a perfect match because it's not the exact same lake, but it's a workable option! Sure, the mountains are steeper and the water is bluecleaner, but these are the movie magic suspensions of disbelief we must make.
Fun note: in 1x03 when Tai says she's seen a lake, she said "it looked just left of due north", and "about 5 miles from here". What does left of due north mean? North West, baby! Now, 40 miles is a lot more than 5, but it's the same direction, so I'm counting it as a win.
Another option:
haha
Sure, it's 210 miles further west than Trutch, but it's called Cry lake, next to Dark Mountain. If that's not fitting as hell for the YJs, I don't know what is! Cry Lake has a lattitude of 58.6, which also makes it closer to 700 miles north than 600, but again: Cry Lake by Dark Mountain. She's 15 miles long.
Assorted smaller lakes:
No terrain filter, so we can see the blue bits
These are all just east of Trutch. The Tuchodi lakes are the two lines in the middle on the right side, and they're about 20 miles (As the crow flies) from the "Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial..." writing, to give you a frame of measurement. There are lots of smaller lakes along the bottom of the image that wouldn't be as big/long as Stave, but they're firmly ensconced in the N. Rockies, as well as being around the right latitude (57-59). You could pick any!
Magnum mine near the top is an actual Mine/"populated locality", so there are people in the area (ish) and it holds up all the mine theories—although I think it's a copper mine, if my googling is accurate.
Winner: I like the Tuchodi lakes option, but it could realistically be any long skinny lake in the N. Rockies within 50 miles of the 58th parallel—so like, ~40 different lakes. I think that's the best we can narrow it down to, considering all the visual clues we get from the show are an amalgamation of filming locations around Vancouver.

Part Four: Conclusion/TL;DR

In conclusion, They're in Northern B.C. and definitely not Ontario, around 58° Latitude, with at least some of the N. Rockies to their East, by a long skinny lake.
You Are Here: :(
Thanks for reading! Please feel free to add to anything I've said, point out any glaringly obvious flaws or things I've missed, or just straight up disagree! This took me three hours so I hope it makes sense and is somewhat easy to follow. Buzz Buzz Buzz!! 🐝🐝

2023.05.24 05:19 punk-ass_bitch The Ten Most Important Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Concerts

I want to clarify two things: 1) this is purely subjective (but based on historical context), and 2) this is the most important shows, not necessarily the best (though there is overlap). In chronological order:
May 9, 1974 — Cambridge, MA
Bruce and an early incarnation of the E Street Band (with Boom Carter on drums) play their second show of the night opening for Bonnie Raitt. Two very important things happened during this show. First, they debuted a new song called “Born To Run.” And second, a young music critic named Jon Landau attended, and famously wrote of his experience: “I saw rock and roll future, and its name is Bruce Springsteen.”
November 18, 1975 — London, UK
The E Street Band — its lineup solidified with the additions of Stevie Van Zandt, Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan — play their first show on foreign soil. Landau’s quote from the precious spring was plastered all over the theatre, giving Bruce anxiety and causing him to have all the marketing materials removed. What followed was a masterpiece of a performance, immortalized a half century later on the DVD Hammersmith Odeon, London ‘75.
September 19, 1978 — Passaic, NJ
I said there was some overlap, and here it is. The utterly flawless homecoming performance widely-circulated as the aptly-titled bootleg Piece De Resistance saw the band play arguably the greatest-ever renditions of “Prove It All Night,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “Racing in the Street” and “Thunder Road.”
September 21 and 22, 1979 — New York, NY
The Legendary No Nukes Concerts. For many casual fans, the accompanying film later that year gave them their first glimpse at the live greatness of the E Street Band. These shows featured the live debut of “The River” and guest appearances from Tom Petty and Jackson Browne.
December 31, 1980 — Uniondale, NY
Again, a crossover from the “greatest shows” list. An epic marathon and arguably the peak of the original River Tour. Festive, legendary, and just so damn fun. Maybe the least “important” show on this list, but at the very least a noteworthy one. Featured the version of “Merry Christmas Baby” that’s appeared on so many holiday compilation albums since.
August 20, 1984 — East Rutherford, NJ
The surprise appearance of The Miami Horns for arguably the most-famous version of “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” was only the beginning. During the encore, Little Steven makes his triumphant return to the band for two songs, including the epic cover of “Drift Away” that is, for my money, the best cover the band has ever done. Also featured all-time-great versions of “Growin’ Up” and “I’m Goin’ Down.”
July 19, 1988 — East Berlin, GDR
If I were to rank these shows, this would be the easy Number One. The E Street Band was the first Western rock band to cross the Berlin Wall. By the most conservative estimates, there were at least 300,000 people in attendance. And many have credited the show with helping crack (and eventually topple) the Wall. The cover of Bob Dylan’s “Chimes of Freedom” and the short speech Bruce gave beforehand was a highlight.
July 1, 2000 — New York, NY
Four words: “We’ll be seein’ ya!” There may be no moment more significant in the 50-year history of this band. They’ve now played together longer since the breakup than they did before it, and those four words — and the acknowledgement that they were officially BACK, and that the reunion was not a one-off thing — were just the beginning. Not to mention it was an inspired performance (and makes up roughly half of the great concert film Live In New York City).
March 20, 2008 — Indianapolis, IN
If you have a chance, go read Jason Federici’s essay about this night and how much it meant to his dad. What made me fall in love with this band was their sense of family and togetherness, and giving a dying Dan Federici the curtain call he deserved after 36 years was just a beautiful moment. My personal-favorite version of “Sandy” opens with just Bruce and Danny, evoking images of the two of them on the Asbury Park boardwalk in 1971.
July 28, 2012 — Göteborg, SE
This show is significant for two reasons. One, it was then the second-longest show in the band’s history at 3 hours and 58 minutes long. Two, it featured the long-awaited return of Bruce’s magnum opus, “Jungleland,” for the first time since the death of Clarence Clemons.

2023.05.24 02:49 SpiritMister What is this on weather radar?

What is this on weather radar?
Noticed this on weather radar near Nashville. Of course the weather is moving East to West, but that’s not what I’m asking about. You can see this storm moving west and what I am used to seeing as a gust front or a storm burst. But it is at the top of the storm and follows behind it.
I am not a meteorologist and do not play one on TV, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. My best guess is this is the normal verga that would be seen on radar as the sun sets and the air cools. The radar just makes it appear this way?
Can someone explain what is actually happening?
