So, I've been thinking about my DDR days, where I was playing somewhat seriously and I'm curious the best way to get back into the swing of things.
I've had a Red Octane Afterburner (3.0?) back from 2007 (I actually found the old receipt in gmail RIP RedOctane), which has been sitting in my garage collecting dust for the last 5 years :( , while it's 'control box' (DB9 to PS2 adapter) has sat in another box and I never seem to have had both at the same time, but I know I've got both at least
I remember setting up Stepmania way back in 2008 or so as an avenue to explore and remember using an old USB to PS2 controller adapter and playing some songs on there on my old laptop.
I've got a spare computer, some room in my office, and I'm honestly trying to figure out the best way to take what I've got and make a little homemade "Stepmania/DDR" machine from it. I want to get back into a healthy hobby.
I've looked online and I found a site DDRPad.com and they seem to have a specialized USB control box which I think might be better than a PS2 controller to usb adapter, I'd assume this would probably be a good choice to be able to keep/use my current dance pad, but I also have no clue who to trust, and DDRFreak seems to be dead lol.
So I guess my questions break down as the following.

1. Is my dance pad still going to be usable? Do any of the sensors degrade over time of non-use and should I buy a Stepmania USB control box and just 'have it work'?
2. When setting up a computer (A small little micro computer with a 6th gen I7 & 8 gb of ram) would it be best to go Windows for driver support? Linux? Or what would you recommend? I have an AtGames mini arcade cabinet thing that has HDMI input, so I was debating using that as a screen, and MAY want to consider loading other types of games onto it, but really it's mostly a question of 'what OS works best for Stepmania"
3. Have songs migrated away from more casual players? I was at the awkward point in DDR where Standard songs were too easy and I was full combo'ing them, but Heavy Songs were a bit much of a challenge. (vanilla 6-8 footers?). I'm out of shape, and would definitely need to ease back into things, and I'm a little worried that the scene has gone into the advanced options (GDQ showcase level)
4. Any sites that I should buy stuff from or avoid?
5. Any general advice as I look to configure all this stuff? I see it looks like there's 2 major versions Stepmania 3.9 & 5.0. If I just want a generic 'DDR Machine" style that has a bunch of songs for me to get back is there anything to worry about?

First one I guess is not customized-- catch and release Mini Evo special edition by Sharper By Design damasteel/timascus. I had to try it because the blade and inlay are absolutely gorgeous, and the action is silky with incredible acoustics. As some of you know, I just can't get into flippers as much as I've tried. Second is a lovely Olamic Whippersnapper, the latest bolster lock variant. Sick contrast between the fat carbon and the frosted finish on the bolsters (which costs extra from the $700 base price on these). Most importantly, it has beautiful regrind by Transparent Knives, redone swedge and everything. The complete details are in this post though I wasn't quick enough to snag it directly then-- I traded fancy full TI xm18 plus cash for this from next owner. Third is a Mac2 3.5", my favorite knife model out there. This one has an amazing custom ano and I got it off the FB group; started as a stonewashed frag with Magnacut blade, and is currently on skiff bearings, has a McNees Mythosaur clip, and of course has completely refinished scales. Assume warranty is void for sure, but the action is incredible and it just looks sick. Comes with box and COA, original bearings, and skiff thick washers! Please note this one has seen use, you can see a few marks on the scales and blade, which has been sharpened and is quite slicey. Fourth is a Benchmade Mini Crooked River from the Custom shop. This one is SWEET, and I think was somewhat of a legend on reddit. It belonged to hzd_joker who put a beautiful mirror edge on it after it got a BGM hollow grind. Carbon fiber scales and the blade is 20CV (not sure bench made even offers this option in the custom line anymore) and was coated; after the regrind it has a sweet two-tone look. Cutting with this one is a pleasure; the video shows some faint lines from use on blade. The body has some wear as pictured, as I loved to carry this one and so did previous owner. Centering is a hair off but quite good for Benchmade. Don't let the word Mini fool you; this one's a full sized knife. Probably would cost about $400 from custom shop before regrind etc, asking SV $325 shipped priority and comes with original bench made box and accessories.

Lastly is a tactile rockwall thumbstud I got on the swap. It has the golf texture with magnacut blade, plus a blue and purple ano job that looks awesome. I just find it a little small; I like some heft to my knives (bugout is too light and stout guys like Mac2 are perfect). Looks sweet though basically a catch and release from me. Mini rant incoming.
Joey’s character was done dirty in comparison to the rest of the cast. He had no emotional, mental, or talent development. The stupid jokes got laughs so he became a caricature of himself.
In the encyclopedia episode, it shows that he’s not stupid, he just lacks significant education. He doesn’t like being dumb and not understanding what’s going on. And he can and enjoys reading, as shown in The Shining/Little Women episode. But that’s quickly forgotten, and the rest of the series is littered with jokes about how he can’t read, or hates reading. That encyclopedia episode could’ve been a stepping stone for him going back to school or at least educating himself, but it’s wasted.
Joey’s lack of awareness steadily becomes a type of total retardation. (In the actual definition of the word, not the slur.) The French episode is one of the cringiest bits of the series.
The moments where Joey is compassionate and sweet are the highlights of some episodes, and in a lot of ways, Joey is the nicest of all the Friends. The episode where he learns to ballroom dance with Treager is great! He’s always making fun of Chandler and Ross for anything effeminate, but he falls in love with dancing. That could’ve been developed into him learning skills and maybe meeting someone at a dance class or something. But no, that’s tossed in the bin as well.
The falling in love with Rachel subplot was the only character development Joey ever gets. It was sincere and wonderful to see that side of him. Even if he wasn’t going to end up with Rachel, that should have been used as a catapult to give him a real relationship arc with someone. Erin (the girl who speaks four languages and he starts falling for but she breaks it off because she’s a “loner”) could have easily been the one for him, or even Mary Ellen, the woman Phoebe sets him up with in the Meeting Mike episode. But all the women that could have had any potential are given some inane flaw or Joey blowing them off because of his incurable playerness.
And it’s such a waste because Matt LeBlanc was absolutely wonderful in any scene where he had to be sincere. His confession of love to Rachel, when he’s rehearsing that love scene, and any time he’s being genuine with Phoebe. I really wish they’d leaned into that more.
Now onto the others. Rachel starts off as a spoiled, shallow person, who likes dating doctors. She and Ross have such drama throughout the show within an extremely toxic dynamic. It would have been a wonderful character arc for Rachel to truly fall in love with someone sweet and the opposite of who she would have gone for in the beginning. The episode where she and Joey go on a date when she’s pregnant could have easily been the start of something if they’d written it that way. It’s honestly one of my favorite episodes. They have such a sweet time together and have great chemistry. I know people hate the Rachel/Joey storyline, but I really believe it could’ve worked if they’d let it. Joey and Rachel could’ve gotten together at the hospital without the Ross drama. Or, they could’ve gotten together in Barbados, again without the Ross drama. (Though, arguably, the margarita episode is a shining comedic achievement to David Schwimmer.)
Rachel and Ross keep falling back on each other. Not because of any true chemistry, but because it’s easy. A true character arc would be Rachel being in a healthy relationship with someone she never would’ve gone for before.
Running jokes and storylines revolve around Ross being divorced. He chain dates nice women (Mona, Charlie to name the best) and drives them away with his absurdity and disregard and pettiness and jealousy. Ross should’ve realized all his negative traits, ended up alone, but working on himself. Ross, with three divorces and blowing up every relationship, would be happy being alone and focusing on being a good father (as Ben’s forgotten character screams from the the abyss).
…I realize this show was made in a time before most sitcoms had running storylines, and not all shows can be Schitt’s Creek. But it drives me nuts how dirty they did these characters, particularly Joey, when there was so much potential!

Hi all! I (25F) was finally diagnosed with BPD 4 days ago after dealing with the signs of it for years. Trying to understand if some things I experience can be attributed to it. So, I’m just wondering if anyone else can relate to this feeling. Some days (like today) I just feel completely switched off from everything & everyone. It’s like the polar opposite of heightened emotions but rather just a feeling of total nothing-ness / indifference. This can go towards my partner & my relationship, my friends, my family, my hobbies. I don’t feel the disgust that typically comes with devaluation but rather just like I feel nothing towards anyone or anything. In a way, it’s distressing to wake up in the morning and feel like I couldn’t care less about my FP or anyone else close to me but at the same time, I sort of welcome these days with open arms. In a messed up way it feels like a break from typically feeling things to the extreme and like for once my emotions have settled (or in a way, disappeared). It never lasts for long, usually just a few hours or a full day max but I’d say it happens about once a week. Just curious if anyone else can relate and if so, any idea where this may stem from?

I have hypothetical that might turn actual shortly:
Contacted by recruiter for job that pays 40k over market. But, requires in-office (these positions are rarely in office, those advertised as such just don’t get filled) Interviewed, got offer, included reloc. Lump sum payment with first check. But, like all the shit in the USA it’s at will, I can get rugpulled any sec. No guarantees of anything, and relocation cross country.
I’m giving two weeks to current job on Mon. They might counter.
Current gig: underpays market rate by 40k Fully remote, minimal BS, I feel like a fraud most days as I barely actually do much (might just be impostor syn.) Love the gig and the peeps, the pay is too low to survive in todays economy.(plus my dog needs a house with a backyard, ASAP)
If current gig says: what’ll it take for you to stay?
I know exactly what I want, I know it’s doable (they just had a jd out for a diff position that they hired for with the salary I would accept as the top of the range) And I would need a severance clause (none currently) ie pay for 3 mo or more, healthcare for 6. And allowance to move wherever I want (currently out “remote” is a per manager thing, not an actual policy, and the CEO was trying to push for onsite last year)
If they meet all that, immona have to ruin the recruiters day… what are the chances they blacklist me across all their offices? ( they are in one of the premier recruiters for these positions/specialty, and have offices across USA and elsewhere)
I don’t care much about the co that made the offer, or their feelings (full of boomers that demand in office) big publicly traded hellhole, etc.
Should I even consider a counter since I’m now a flight risk? Even though pay is the only reason? The only reason my predecessor in this position left was because of pay…
I need headless input plz

I feel like the biggest fraud of a dad. I love my two-year old daughter, but I hate having a kid.
If I have to be home with her while my wife is running an errand or something, it invariably ends in frustration for me. She’s two. She’s allowed to do two-year old things, and I understand that. But that means dealing with potty training accidents, constantly getting up from where I’m sitting (for no reason other than she doesn’t want me sitting there), and any meltdowns resulting from me not understanding her two-year old language that loosely resembles English, or her not understanding why she can’t have a cookie.
Growing up, my mom often expressed anger at my dad’s selfishness. He would play tennis a few nights a week, but my sister and I were generally old enough to take care of ourselves outside of cooking. Problem was that he had some anger issues, did leave almost all of the chores to my mom, and was sometimes violent. I vowed never to be that.
Now, at 36, I can’t get over the idea of being “selfish” even if I know I need to take care of myself, and make myself happy. Before having a kid, I played sports and could take time for myself whenever I needed it. This summer, I got cut from a team I’ve been with for a long time because I chose to not travel for weekend-long tournaments. I’ve been spiraling in the week or two since then. I thought I’d be retained as a practice player, but I was just cut loose. I feel like I gave up something I’ve been passionate about for almost 20 years. My wife has said that I could travel a few weekends, but I know it’s hard on her, and that makes me feel bad for doing it, and that’s why I made the choice I did. I feel “selfish” anytime my kid is awake and I’m doing something that isn’t house-related or child-involved. One weekend, my mom visited. She’s great with our daughter and often comes to help us cook and hang out with her first granddaughter. I went out for a round of golf (which is one of my escape mechanisms), and my mom said to my wife, “Oh, don’t let him go out and golf”. My wife pushed back on that, but I do also feel guilty going out to play when my kid is awake and my wife is solo-parenting.
I dunno…this whole thing reads like a giant rant but I just need to know I’m not alone here. Maybe I’m a good parent, but maybe I’m just really good at pretending to be one, and I’m just not cut out for it. It’s funny because I keep remembering the Bluey episode where Bandit is a claw machine and says something like “the claw has no kids. His days are free and clear” and I can’t help but feel a little jealousy for my friends who don’t have kids yet, or have definitely chosen not to.

Today I faced 2 games where there were 3 or 4 heavy cc. In one they had lux morg malz senna and in the other one ahri rammus lux sej.
Generally I get tenacity in runes, build a qss (even if im considering to stop doing so since is an expensive item that slows down my eclipse in most games where i take it and it cleanses on cc) but still i cant get close to the carries since some champs like neeko or morg have multiple ccs. Also I find hard to play against long range comps, like xerath, senna, and generally champs who can poke me while i charge toward their team. Any tips?

I’m 29, and only started online gambling last Sept 2022, but somehow managed to wipe off all my decade worth of life savings, from that point until the end of May 2023. 2 weeks in, i knew i was immediately reeled in and already starting to get addicted, but somehow kept going anyway? Absolutely did not gain anything from it, it’s a full cycle of my brain just keep on tricking me that if i bet now, i’ll win this time, but most of you know how it ended. Small bet winnings, then you’ll try to turn them into big bets, then of course, here comes your losing streak. I really don’t know what has been going on in my brain for indulging and letting the silly thought win each time. You’d really think that what you’re depositing are just numbers, but no, you’ll only realize that it’s actual real money until it’s all gone. Plus the feeling of jealousy with other players who just keep on winning. Then questioning as to why i am not as lucky as they are? Then turning into feeling like the whole universe just hates you. Such a weird thing for me because I don’t have any kind of gambling history prior. For the entirety of my 20s i’ve handled my money so well, so it’s very insane the fact i blew it all in a span of 9 months. Probably the reason why i keep betting big anyway is because I can’t justify what had become of me and accept that what i’ve worked so hard for are gone now, all because of i tried gambling. Very heartbreaking that i’ll never get it back, as fast as i threw them away. That’s the hard truth, as difficult as it is, we have to accept it. I have to accept it.
Been planning to stop gambling since the year started, but keep failing to commit every time. I was able to quit for about the whole month of February, and then just kept relapsing after that. I am determined to entirely quit this time.
I wanted to say thank you to everyone sharing their progress stories on here. I love reading how well you guys managed to beat this addiction, please keep sharing them. I’ll get there again someday.
If you can relate to what i’ve been saying, i’m very sorry that you’re going through this as well. I don’t want to feel dumb and lost anymore, and by posting here i hope to help bring clarity and some sense into other’s brain, because i know you guys are the only ones who will understand the stupidity of it all. i’m not one to tell you what to do, and it’s ironic coming from me, since i’ve been reading on here for the past month, and my mind knows it never ends well, i keep ignoring that voice anyway but well, i can try. I promised to myself that i’ll really stop starting this June, and so that’s what i’m doing and so far, it’s going well. Gambling defeated me, but now it’s my turn to defeat it. If you’re struggling right now, my thoughts goes out to you. Please sort it out, it will definitely take a while, but it’s not too late to stop now and try to rewire your mindset. Distract yourself with something else. Put on your favorite songs and sing along, watch whatever the hell is on youtube that’s not gambling related, talk to a friend, plan your future with what you currently have and work on starting your finances over again, just really anything that will take your mind off of gambling. For starters, i cleared my browsing history for a clean slate. The change will only really start when you want to, i hope the time comes sooner for you too. Right now, i’ll be living paycheck to paycheck until maybe early next year, for my bills and other personal expenses. But the good thing is i don’t have big debts because i only really gambled my own savings for the most part. Still frustrating though that i won’t have any emergency funds until then, but that’s part of the consequence that i have to live with.
I’m a stranger from the internet, but i truly wish for everyone’s peace of mind, and a better life than today. We can change back to life prior this. I’m leaving this devastating phase of my life behind. I hope you do to. Those 9 months felt like a nightmare, but i’m choosing to wake up now. It’s such a trance like you’re hypnotized, but i think i have finally snapped out of it. I’m not letting this addiction take over the rest of my life. It’s a new month, i hope we can all start our journey to recovery sooner, and not later. Thank you for reading this post.
