2023.05.29 17:52 screenee Sapphic social network anyone?
Hey folks! I keep seeing posts with the recurring theme of sapphic folks like us looking for a WLW community and friends. I’m a nerdy lesbian who’s into breaking tech and building stuff so I made a thing for us :)
Super early days still but if anyone wants an invite to a very very very new wlw social network, drop a comment or send me a DM. Once I get enough interest, I’ll send out links…because a social group of one doesn’t seem very ummmm social lol
I’d love to get some input on what you’d like to see so I can make it a great place to hang out (and help me crush any pesky bugs) 🐜👟

2023.05.29 17:33 Amandarichie583 AITA for not giving my hotel room up at a wedding?
My family member last year asked me to be her bridesmaid really close to her wedding because another bridesmaid had dropped out. I of course accepted even though I lived 2 states away. I made time to attend every bridal shower, bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner etc.
My hometown is a few hours away from the town the wedding was in so each time I travelled I either drove a few more hours to stay with my parents or stayed on a family members couch. For the wedding, this was not an option since so much family was coming into town, all the guest bedrooms and couches were already spoken for so i planned on getting a hotel room for the night of the wedding.
The bride asked me a few weeks in advance if I needed a hotel room since she was blocking off rooms for the band and said she would block off one extra room for me. When I called the hotel they had only one extra room besides the ones she blocked off for that night so I triple checked with her that one room was for me. She assured me one was so I changed the room into my name and put my card on file.
My boyfriend also drove from two states away to come to the wedding with me and brought my dog since no one would be home to watch her. We planned on leaving her in the pet friendly hotel during the wedding and checking on her every few hours since the hotel was super close to the reception. This was also by boyfriends first time meeting my family so we were excited.
The day of the wedding the bride tells me that I no longer have a room at the hotel because they did not book enough rooms for the band so they would be taking mine. I informed her that my boyfriend and my dog we’re already on there way to check in to the hotel and she basically said sorry they can’t check in. All other hotels close to the area were booked solid for that night and the only available room was over 30 minutes away and $300 more than what I paid. I let her know that I spent a lot of money to travel back and forth for her wedding and didn’t have the money even in my account to do so. She asked me to find somewhere else to stay, which I tried but with my boyfriend, my dog (who doesn’t get along with other dogs) and I, there was literally nowhere. She told me she didn’t know what to tell me so I told her if I no longer had a hotel room that I would be asking my boyfriend and dog to head back to my parents house hours away and I would be leaving the reception early to go home too.
She was very upset with me but I felt like I had no other choice and I feel as though it has ruined our relationship. The manager at the hotel informed me that since my name and card were already on the reservation that nobody else could check into my room and the bride had to send one of the band members to the other hotel that was farther away and more expensive.
Am I the asshole for not giving my room up?

2023.05.29 17:20 Unciia The Peaceful Settlement site
| This is an example how I use Peaceful Settlement theme/domain to generate a village. So it is Longhall, medium sized town in Havens which serves as travellers outpost from mines to the big settlements of Havens. It is a "Formidable" site with 10 points of interest. - Is a square with tree, where I've gathered information about Longhall
- Is a theifs pit, where I have sworn a vow to solve problems in mines of the north, because rogues of Longhall have a profit from trading.
- Is a scouts watehouse, who asked me to find a relic in ancient ruins, because he knows a buyer for it. I sworn a vow.
- Is a tavern, where I gave the she-varou a potion (because I am alchemist), and she invited my to their camp in the north.
- Is a hunters house. I've bought some supplies from him.
- Is a smith. There was a guards patrol, and I am not in very good relationship with them, so I sneaked out.
- Is small village garden, where I had a rest.
- Is a guarded traders warehouse, where the barrels with toxic substance comes from the moor nearby. It is a dangerous "Fortified Stronghold" site itself, I destroyed barrells successfully, but it will increase a threat for my main quest, if I don't kill the messanger asap.
- Is a herbalist store, I will visit it after, maybe (when I gain enough experience).
- Is a pilgrims house, he want to visit firstborns circle in the Flooded lands, but I am too busy, maybe, the next time.
I glued this map in my journal. When I return, maybe I will add more information. submitted by Unciia to Ironsworn [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 16:49 Jkwallen_cats AITA in the middle for life?
So my mom moved close 3 years ago to be closer to me and the children. She is no longer married but complains often she is lonely. She gets manipulative if my husband is home and says short or hurtful comments to try to make me feel guilty for spending time with him. He works a lot so when he's home I want to spend as much time with him as I can. I still invited my mom to do some baking with myself and my daughter while my husband was resting. She came over and was "moppy" the whole time and then just left. She also walks in my house without a call or text and will open my bedroom door without asking first to even come over. One day I locked my bedroom door while I was in the shower and had music playing while I got ready. She accused me of doing "adult things" since my door was locked. No, I just dont want you barging into my bedroom...I literally feel in the middle and like I'm being pulled in two different directions. Help!

2023.05.29 16:31 SleeplessFromSundown The Séance Club - The End of Windhaven Manor [Final]
This post is the final part of this story. Sorry it has taken so long to get through. And I'm not sure I even understand all of it yet. If you're new, this all started
here. The previous part (Part 7) is
here. Thank you to everyone who followed along.
-----
“Do you see her?” I asked in a meek voice.
“You mean that girl in black?” Harvey answered.
It was her, in the flesh. Her lips parted and formed a malevolent smile. Her dark eyes fixed on mine. My legs turned to solid lead. My feet refused to move. The anxiousness to reach Parker and Juliet and Beth in the cellar crumbled like the wood turning to ash behind us. She demanded my attention.
A hand rocked my shoulder. Harvey. I pushed him away.
“You have to go. Help them. I’ll take care of her.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll be right behind you.”
A mirage of Harvey flitted past Ally and disappeared into the kitchen. Everything blurred, everything but her.
She tilted her head to one side and bridged the gap between us with four slow and deliberate steps. She pushed her right hand out from a long sleeve and ran the black painted nail of her index finger across my cheek, the smooth lacquer cold against my skin. I shuddered as the chill spread like ice creeping up a window.
“It is such a shame to be losing you so soon. We’ve only just met, and yet I feel like we’ve known each other our whole lives. Do you feel it too?”
I shook my head. “Let me go.”
“We’re past that now Sam. I considered if we could coexist, you and I. It gave me a thrill knowing there is another one out there like me. But you insist on meddling with my work.”
“You mean locking all those girls in that filthy dungeon where they met their end? And Jane here.”
“The work is sometimes unpleasant.”
“But the pay is good?”
“This isn’t about money Sam. You and I are the same. The pain you felt from not fitting in. The lonely nights lying awake, wishing you could be like everyone else. The stares and the whispers. The rejection from those who are supposed to love us the most. I too know. But where you hid, I searched out a path where my talents were appreciated and rewarded. You don’t hate me Sam. You hate yourself for not thriving like I have.”
“Thriving? Is that what you call it?”
“By all measures yes. I am good at what I do. The best. The only. Or so I thought. And then there is you. A naïve, sheltered little boy who can barely put on his own pants in the morning. It is such a shame. And these so-called friends of yours, that was always doomed to failure. Oh and if you harbour any thoughts of them escaping, know that we blocked the little secret entrance the stable boy showed you. There’s no escape except through the fire. When they pick through the ashes of this building they will find their bones, and yours. Is this how you imagined it turning out?”
I flexed the muscles in my legs, but they refused to move. Ally smiled.
“It’s useless now Sam.”
I heard the faint whisper of Juliet’s voice in my head. She pleaded with me. Come on Sam, you can do this. I remembered the last encounter with Ally, outside the wall separating Windhaven Manor from the world. Ally had put me in the white room. I had broken free. I had overcome her power once. I had to do it again.
I took a deep breath in through my nose and cried out and willed my feet to move. Electricity coursed through my body and I directed it down to the floor. My left heel separated from the floor and that set the whole thing in motion. The dam burst. I lurched forwards and overbalanced and sprawled to the floor.
Ally crouched beside me and chuckled. “Some would call it a tragedy for a child to die so soon after learning to walk.”
I looked back towards the front of the house. The fire burned hot. Thick black smoke circled up the huge open space of the gallery. Portraits hanging on the wall bubbled and curled as flames consumed them.
A figure appeared at the foot of the staircase. The spectre of Crown. The goons had dragged his lifeless corpse out of the house, but stood before me was the spirit with unfinished business. The ugliness of his actions showed through now in death. His skin was sallow and wrinkled. His head too big for his body and his teeth yellowed. A grotesque monster made worse by his mortal demise.
Ally whispered in my ear. “He knows it was your meddling that brought about his end. I’ll leave you two alone.”
She brushed my cheek with the back of her hand and stood. As she walked away leather straps materialised out of thin air and pinned my body to the floor.
The spectre of Crown grew before me, swelling in size until he had to crouch to stay below the chandelier. He clenched his fists and with burning red eyes let out a guttural growl that skipped my ears and penetrated directly into my skull.
I tried to pull my hands to my ears but they would not come. It made no difference. The roar coming from Crown stabbed the inside of my head like a thousand daggers. I lifted my head and the growl grew to a scream that ricocheted around the inside of my skull. I couldn’t take much more. It felt as though my head would explode.
Guilt bubbled up and mingled with the fear and I shrank into the floor and wished for it to swallow me. They were down there, the only friends I had known, banging against a locked door denying their escape. I sobbed. I sobbed like I had the night my parents turned from me.
In the pit of my stomach something else grew. A seed of frustration born of a lifetime existing in a world that didn’t make sense. A world where I had no idea who I was and what I could or should do. A world in which I hid. I couldn’t do that now.
Juliet’s voice as clear as day, cutting through the racket of Crown’s scream. Do it Sam. I gritted my teeth and electricity buzzed somewhere deep inside, at first dull and imperceptible, and then amplified and resonating until it peaked into a deafening roar.
Above Crown the bulbs in the chandelier glowed white. He swivelled his head and watched them dumbly.
I concentrated, felt the energy forming an extra limb. Like the arms and legs of a newborn it flailed spasmodically. I fought to control it, to turn it to my will. I focussed on the straps pinning me to the floor. The electricity fed into the straps and turned them hot. For a moment I feared they would scold my skin, and then in a moment of release they split and flung upwards.
I picked myself up off the floor and faced the spectre of Crown. Like a spent boxer throwing one final punch I threw out my hands and screamed, willing Crown to be quiet and be still. Demanding he be so.
The floor shook. The dozens of bulbs in the chandelier shattered. The giant spectre of Crown diminished and the screaming inside my head softened until it was no more. Crown’s eyes opened wide as his mouth stitched together and his arms wrenched behind his back. I flicked my hand like I was swatting a fly and Crown flew into the corner of the room and slumped to the floor.
I bent over and rested my hands on my knees. My muscles ached, like I had run a marathon. Shadows played on the floor. I sucked in air and smoke and spluttered and coughed.
In the hallway the silhouette of Ally. She turned and shook her head. The heat of the fire intensified and crackled at my skin. If we were to make our escape, she could not be here to block us. I straightened and strode towards her.
I cycled furiously through the events of the last few days, searching for something to defeat Ally. I had to do to her what she had done to me. The time for running and breaking her spells was through.
I closed my eyes and concentrated. I stripped away everything except for the two of us. The crackle of the fire replaced with silence. The smell of the smoke disappeared. The heat washed away. One by one I shut down all my senses. When I opened my eyes a monotone room of white. Sterile calm had replaced the burning insides of Windhaven Manor.
Her eyes scanned the room and she giggled. “Cheap tricks won’t get you far,” she said. “And you learned this one from me.”
The white rippled as if the walls were made of water. She was fighting it. I concentrated, focussing all my energy, all my will. The ripples slowed and then stopped.
“You’re a fast learner,” she said. “But I have been doing this for more than a weekend.”
Strips of colour permeated the white. A rectangle of tile appeared on the floor. And then some blue from the curtain. Enough of a smouldering wall to let in some smoke. The acrid smell reached my nose and I spluttered. As each wedge of colour appeared, I filled it back in white. But it was a sinking ship and the pail I held to bail out the water would not be enough.
Ally grunted under her breath. A grunt of frustration. The white room shook and made a sound like a train bearing down.
I had to bind her. I raised my palm and coils of rope rose from the ground and oscillated like snakes around her. She swatted them away and wrenched them from the ground and flung them at my feet, limp and unmoving.
“It won’t be that easy,” she sneered.
My arms jerked behind my back. She bound my wrists and then my ankles. She pursed her lips and blew as if extinguishing a single candle on a birthday cake, and it was enough to send me to the floor. I couldn’t do this on my own. I needed help.
I shut my eyes and concentrated my energy not on my bindings, but on the woods at the back of Windhaven Manor. On the girls who escaped the dungeon and now roamed the forest, watching the house burn from behind the barrier Ally constructed.
I fed the energy coursing through my body into the giant snowdome structure until it burned hot and then like the globes in the chandelier, it cracked and exploded into the night sky. The spirits of the girls watched the shards disappear and then strode towards the Manor.
I turned my attention to the tiny room beside the pantry, where Jane Laughlin lay bound to the bed. I stood beside her and lay my hand on the shackles binding her to the bed. She shuddered as the mask came free from her mouth and then stood as the shackles broke.
I opened my eyes and the white of the room flickered off and then back on again like bad reception on a television. I had to keep the white walls up long enough for them to draw near. For them to be ready when the façade fell. Ally strode towards me, exuding confidence.
“You can’t beat me Sam.”
Ally squeezed her hands into fists and screamed. In a burst of energy she wiped the white room clear and we were back in the burning house. The air was thick with smoke. Behind me a timber beam tumbled from the ceiling and crashed to the floor. The heat and smoke sucked the moisture from my insides and I heaved out a series of coughs.
Ally opened her eyes and smiled. She had bested me. But then they came. The girls from the dungeon and Jane Laughlin surrounded her. The sum total off all the pain and hurt inflicted in this place. Everything Ally had worked to keep hidden from the world.
They lurched at Ally. She raised her hands and pushed them back one by one as they went for her. She spun on the spot, trying to keep them at bay. She could not hold them all back. The sheer weight of numbers overwhelmed. They leaned in and pushed their heads into hers and showed her what those men had done. Made her feel it. The fear and despair and anger of each individual stacked together and Ally crumpled to the floor holding her head.
“Make it stop,” she said.
They kept at her.
Jane Laughlin sidled over to the base of the stairs where Crown sat, bound and with his mouth stitched. She considered him, restrained and helpless on the floor as she had been. He fought with his restraints, and then whimpered, as she had. As I ran for the pantry and the wine cellar, the corridor filled with the muffled sound of his screams.
The door to the cellar stood open and I made the descent of the stairs in three leaps. The enclosed space already full with smoke. At the end of the long corridor leading outside, Parker and Harvey shouldered the door. Juliet and Beth screamed encouragement. The door would not budge.
“We can’t go that way,” I yelled.
They raced back up the long corridor. A sudden rush of emotion bubbled up to the surface. I was so happy to see them all still alive. My lower jaw rattled and my hands shook. I fought to hide it.
Beth reached me first. “Sam, you’re ok.”
I blubbered a response and took in a lung full of smoke. We had to get out.
The fire raged outside the kitchen door. A wave of flame climbed up and spread across the ceiling. A subtle cracking sound from above intensified and a chunk of the upstairs floor came crashing down through the ceiling, blocking the rear door. We couldn’t get out the back. The only way now was back through the house. A ball of flame whooshed through the doorway and I put my arm up too late, my eyebrows wilting in the heat.
We crouched together in the middle of the kitchen, lowering our heads to get the last of the remaining oxygen. Malicious red flames and choking black smoke surrounded us on all sides.
“Where do we go now?” Parker’s words came out between coughs. Tears streaked down his cheeks. Soot covered his brow. I wished I had an answer.
Then he was there, standing over Parker’s shoulder. Leon. With the protective bubble gone, he too was free to come in the Manor.
“The fire has not yet consumed the dining room. But you don’t have long.”
I looked vaguely in the direction of the kitchen door and blinked back the stinging from the smoke. “I don’t think we can find it in this.”
“Follow me.”
I pulled my shirt up over my head. “We have to go. The dining room, we can make it. All together on three.”
I shouted out the numbers, the sound drowned out by the roar of the fire. I grabbed Beth’s hand and yanked her into action. Leon led the way and I kept my eyes on his heels. Together we were a flurry of arms and legs bounding for the dining room. I gritted my teeth against the heat. We burst through the doorway and everything turned orange.
From below the sweater pulled tight down over my hair, I shot a glance over to the floor of the grand gallery where I had left Ally writhing on the floor. She was not there now. Nor were the spectres of the girls.
I followed Leon’s heels into the dining room. The great wooden table smouldered in the centre of the room. Brilliant orange flames consumed the thick curtains. Parker spotted his camera still atop the tripod and set to pulling the camera free before Harvey grabbed his arm and yelled something that sounded like ‘leave it’.
Harvey grabbed one of the heavy chairs with their high backs and velvet cushions and heaved it at the window in the back corner of the room. The chair disappeared into the darkness of the night and Harvey kicked at the glass shards left behind. Parker joined. We piled out the opening.
I drank in the fresh cool air of night, staggering over the narrow path beside the house and to the small strip of grass beyond. Parker collapsed beside me and pulled the laptop out from under his shirt. He tapped at the casing and for a moment a brief smile flashed across his face, but it did not last long. He wiped soot and sweat from his face with shaking hands.
Harvey checked us all in turn, like a parent fussing over their children. We had scrapes and bruises and our skin was red and raw, but we were alright. We had survived. He ran to the front of the house and came back with palms held out by his sides. The man in the black suit, the goons Ponytail and Beanie, and Ally were all gone, along with the black van and the BMW.
Huddled together, we watched the fire consume Windhaven Manor, bright reds and oranges lighting up the windows and thick black smoke tumbling into the purple haze of sky. It was almost morning, the horizon signalling the coming of the sun.
Leon stood apart on the grass. I went to him.
“Thank you for coming back for us.”
He shrugged. “It’s something. It isn’t enough to make up for the rest.”
“You saved our lives. And those girls, they had their chance to meet their tormentors. That’s something too.”
He nodded. “What happens now?”
I turned my head sideways. “I’m still learning how all this works.”
The red of the fire reflected in his eyes. “Me too. I might go for a walk in the woods. I always liked it out there.”
He glided across the lawn and entered the trees and was gone.
The sound of sirens fought with the crackle of the fire. The fire brigade and the police. I got to my feet and shuffled to the front of the Manor. The burnt out carcasses of our cars stood by the low height wall. Black soot smudged the stone façade above the windows and the doors.
By the oak tree on the ocean side of the house stood Jane Laughlin. She peered down into a hole dug at the base of the tree. A pale and withered hand poked up out of the dirt. Her hand. They had meant to remove the body, but had aborted the task and fled.
A fire truck appeared at the head of the driveway and then another. They sped down the gravel and came to a sliding stop. A lone police car followed. Harvey sidled over.
Jane looked to the horizon. Out on the cliff edge stood a figure in a red dress. She recognised her sister Kylie immediately and ran down the slope. The two sisters embraced in the first light of the sun. I turned to the whoosh of water through a hose from the fire trucks and when I turned back, the Laughlin sisters were gone.
The members of The Séance Club, which I now consider myself a part, sat together on the low-height stone wall as the firefighters extinguished the flames consuming Windhaven Manor. The house was quiet now. The nausea and vibration I had felt that first night replaced with calm.
The police stripped the compound clean for the best part of a week. They identified Kyle the sketch artist and Hugo from the teeth that survived the fire of the hovel built over the dungeon. Hugo’s wife lay on the back lawn where Beanie and Ponytail had left her. But as to specific evidence of the crimes that occurred, they could not find enough to put a case together.
The two fires and the disappearance of Crown made some headlines, but there wasn’t enough to hang anyone else. The police claimed publicly that there was no link between the fire at Windhaven Manor and the fire at the squalid residence over the back fence. At Harvey’s behest they searched the area with cadaver dogs for the remains of the girls, but they found nothing.
Parker turned his laptop over to the police. They identified the two goons, Ponytail and Beanie, low level thugs who had disappeared from the streets years earlier. Those in the know presumed them dead. It made tracing them almost impossible. Tracing their vehicles lead to a dead end.
The man in black the suit on the other hand might as well be a ghost. On him they found nothing. They have a face, but nothing else.
As for Ally, the girl somehow managed to always turn her face away from the cameras, as if she knew where they were.
I sat in a small room at the police station for three days with Harvey putting the pieces together. He showed me a photograph of an old and gaunt man with a bent back, the last owner of Windhaven Manor before it was sold after his death. He had to be the man with the bent back from the ceremony in the dungeon, but I could not be certain. I never saw his face. Of the faces I did see, we knew Crown and Kyle and Hugo, but the others were harder to pinpoint.
At the end of it all Harvey sighed. There was nothing more we could do. But we could rest on the knowledge that the key players in the ceremony were all now dead.
Questions nagged at me. Where was Ally and what was she doing? Would she try to find me? Who was she working for?
That was the biggest question of all. Who was at the top and pulling the strings? Harvey wasn’t giving up. He was a dog with a bone at the best of times, and now he had a taste of blood. He refused to go back to the police even after Crown’s departure, which he described as the removal of a cancerous limb.
Harvey called me after the dust settled on everything. I told him that the trail had gone cold and I had no idea where Ally was. For all I knew she had evaporated into thin air. Harvey thought it unlikely, and I agreed. He told me it was time for some old-fashioned detective work. The names of the goons would be a start.
And there was something else Harvey mentioned, something that I had almost forgotten. He had always believed that his investigation into the disappearance of the girls was the reason one of his colleagues was murdered. Crown confirmed as much in the bedroom right before he was shot. Harvey thinks there is something to it. Another thread to pull, and he has a hunch. For now he’s keeping his cards close to his chest until he has some proof. I almost pressed him on the issue but decided I’d rather put it all behind me.
The story made headlines in the local press for a while, but ultimately it fizzled into a non-story, quickly forgotten by a public with a short attention spans. We all waited for a reckoning from within the police ranks, but it never came. Harvey predicted that’s the way it would go, and he was proven right.
The one item they did recover was a gold necklace with a heart pendant. The necklace Jane Laughlin wore the night of her death. The police found it where the black van had parked. After a few days in the possession of the police, Harvey arranged to have the necklace released to the family of its former owner.
The following day Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin appeared on the local news, thanking the efforts of those who recovered the remains of their daughter. It was closure, though not the kind they had hoped for. Both their girls were dead.
A week later The Séance Club convened in Beth’s apartment. Parker and Juliet were already there when I arrived. It was cathartic to talk about the events at Windhaven Manor, to compare stories and scars. I guess that’s why they have the saying about a problem shared.
After a brief silence, Beth asked, “Are you going to talk to the parents of Jane and Kylie?”
I shook my head. “What will I tell them?”
“That their daughters found each other out by the cliff edge.”
“And what about the agony of their deaths? Should I tell them that too? Besides, it doesn’t feel right. None of this feels right to me yet. And what weight do my words hold over those of some Priest talking about how he knows their souls are at rest.”
“Because you really do know.”
I shrugged. “I can’t prove any of it.”
Truth was I had no idea how to integrate the things I could see and do into my life. From childhood all I had wanted was to be like everyone else. For people not to stare or whisper as I walked by. To find acceptance. Sitting with my three new friends at Beth’s tiny kitchen table, with our shared experience behind us, I finally had it. This could be the start of something.
Parker was already planning the next Séance Club trip. An abandoned farm up north with mysterious sightings going back centuries. Juliet was already on board. I told them to wait. I couldn’t jump back in right away.
I was the last to leave, Beth and I sipping mug after mug of coffee and sharing comfortable silence. When I sighed and told her I should go, she grabbed my arm.
“I’ve never had a real family, and then I found Juliet and Parker. The Séance Club became my family. Whatever happens we are there for each other. And we mean it when we say we want you to join.”
I thought about that all night, unable to sleep.
The next morning I called Parker.
An abandoned farm up north you say?
* * * *
I navigated to the narrow alley and checked the time. The Exchange should be open. It looked out of context in the Saturday morning light. No bright light spilling from the window. No surge of Friday night after work traffic.
I slipped in the front door. A lone man lifted upturned stools down from the bar. He had his back to me and I crept across the hardwood floor in the direction of the stairs down and the bathrooms.
The vibration swelled in my chest, but I did not fear it. A dull pain rose in the base of my skull, but I gritted my teeth. A man wearing a pair of rough leather shoes came from the other end of the corridor and stopped before me.
“Are you here to help?”
I nodded.

2023.05.29 16:04 ToePaints AITA for falling asleep after a long day?
I (28F) and fiancé (40m) decided to have a Sunday fun day yesterday after I got off of work (he was off work for the day) I woke up at 5:45am and worked from 7-2 with no break (Sunday brunch shift.) After I got home i asked to go for a motorcycle to decompress after work. Which we did. Then our friends had invited us to go have a few drinks and play pool. Around 9 I asked if we could go home, relax and have a bonfire. I ended up falling asleep by the fire around 11:15 which he woke me up to go back inside. Once inside he decides to take a shower and I told him I’d wait for him in the bedroom. Well here’s the issue, I sat in bed and tried to play on my phone to stay awake and ended up passing out with the phone in my hand. I woke up some time later and he was laying next to me (awake) so I rolled over to snuggle up and he asked me not to touch him so I obliged and went back to sleep. This morning he is now pissed off at me for falling asleep saying we got to do everything I wanted to do yesterday but as soon as it was time to spend time with him I just go to sleep. I tried to explain to him that I was absolutely exhausted but he won’t hear it. So am I the asshole here?

2023.05.29 15:44 friedapplepeach [35] M4F USA / Anywhere - Seeking Connection
Hello! Like many, I find the current landscape for making friends or relationships is severely lacking. I think of myself capable of being friends and possibly more with many types of people, yet the online dating apps encourage to not engage with strangers for the pettiest of reasons. A swiping, meaningless chat quagmire. Do you feel the same way? Are you looking for more, like me?
I'm looking for a connection, and I'm open to where it leads - starting as friends makes the bond run deeper. Openness invites ambiguity, I'm aware, yet I can't help but think of James Baldwin: we cannot invent our mooring posts, lovers, and friends. Life gives these and takes them away.
However, we can make openings for new beginnings. This post is to offer a place to anchor should you'd like to.
Me:
Tall, active body type, rather pale, slightly rosy cheeked, with a penchant for getting lost in museums and bookstore aisles. Mid 30s with touches of grey in my brown hair. Ambitious, part-time goofy, with weirdly hypnotic dance moves, breathy-vocals when singing, pro cuddling skills. Two goals for 2023: get back into long distance hiking, and to record an EP.
I’m in the corporate world for work, but also do part-time as a canine theme songwriteperformer for my family’s dogs. Mellow most days, always curious. In need of a road trip or two. Would like to find my other half and build things with her.
West Coast, USA
You:
Talkative people tend to flow best with me, but introverts are welcome too- I can lead the dance. Being able to tolerate the occasional rambly monologue on history would be ideal (you ever wanted to know the history of Marius and Sulla? No? Buckle up), a simple pat on my head will suffice. Also, sharing your interests- I care less about keeping a tally of what we match on, I want to feel and know your passions, hobbies, and guilty pleasures. Having good communication skills along with emotional maturity is sexy! Physically, I tend to become attracted to one’s physical traits the deeper the connection. I’m an active person, and while I can definitely enjoy a lazy day and have had many movie marathon, I tend not to stay inside all day and yearn for adventure near and far - we’d match best if you were the same.
Chats or messages work for me, thank you!

2023.05.29 14:21 VW2001 Introducing Myself and Sharing CSIR-NET Goals - Let's Build a Supportive Community!
Hey everyone!
I'm Alec (pen name), and I'm thrilled to be part of this new community that I've created. Today marks the first day of our 30-day posting routine, and I couldn't think of a better theme to kickstart our discussions than "Introduce yourself and share your CSIR-NET goals."
A little about myself: I'm currently a final year Integrated MSc Life Sciences student. I have already cleared GATE with a decent rank, but my journey doesn't end there. My next big challenge is the CSIR-NET examination in the field of Life Sciences, scheduled for the December session. It's a rigorous test, but I'm determined to succeed and pave my way into the world of neurobiology.
My passion lies in studying neurodegeneration, and I have a particular interest in utilizing marine models to explore this fascinating field. My ultimate goal is to become a neurobiologist dedicated to developing drugs against neurodegenerative diseases. I strongly believe that understanding the complexities of the brain and finding effective treatments is a crucial step towards improving the lives of those affected by these conditions.
However, I understand that this path may not always be easy. Whether it's facing challenges in academia or struggling to find the right opportunities in India, I'm committed to pushing forward. I firmly believe that if we have the drive and determination, we can make a difference, regardless of the obstacles that come our way.
That's why I created this community—to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for like-minded individuals who share a passion for science, specifically after CSIR-NET. Together, we can build a strong support system, share our experiences, and motivate each other to overcome any hurdles we may encounter on our journey towards our CSIR-NET goals.
I invite you all to introduce yourselves, share your aspirations, and let us know how we can support each other. Whether you're a seasoned researcher, a student preparing for the CSIR-NET examination, or simply interested in the field of life sciences, this community welcomes everyone.
Let's make this group a hub of knowledge, inspiration, and encouragement. I believe that by joining forces, we can achieve great things and make a real impact in our chosen field.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post, and I look forward to getting to know all of you and embarking on this incredible journey together.
Best regards,
Alec

2023.05.29 13:20 OwlCouncil23 Tales of Mundane and Magical (Book1) - Chapter 3
Previous Chapter Table of Contents
As we approached the front door, Aunt Freya turned to the dogs and said, “Jax and Apollo, wipe your paws,” in a firm but gentle tone. To my amazement, the two giant dogs obediently raised their massive paws one by one and wiped them on the towel hanging by the door.
Once their paws were clean, Aunt Fraya opened the unlocked door and led us inside. I first noticed how cozy and inviting the house’s interior was. The walls were painted a warm beige color and adorned with various paintings and photographs. The living room had a comfortable-looking couch and armchairs, with a coffee table in the center. It looked almost exactly how I remembered it the last time I was here. The only noticeable difference was the three dog beds by the door, and the pictures were newer, with people I barely recognized.
The dogs escorted us inside, one ahead and one behind me. I got a distinct feeling they didn’t trust me yet. But at least I wasn’t their chew toy.
I heard someone running towards me as I put my bags on the floor beside the coffee table. Suddenly, I felt a pair of thin arms wrap tightly around my waist. For a second, I freaked out, but I looked down and realized it was my cousin Julie! “John! I can’t believe you’re here!” she exclaimed, still holding me tightly.
Somehow shimmying and squirming, I hugged her back, feeling genuinely happy to see her for the first time in years. “Hey Julie, good to see you too. It’s been too long.” I replied, grinning.
After a few more seconds, Julie let go of me and stepped back to look at me, then suddenly punched me in the stomach. “Yeah, cause someone was too busy to visit or gone when we came to visit!” she said, smiling as I rubbed where she punched me.
I couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed at the compliment, but I smiled back nonetheless. “Well, I needed to do those projects...and trips...” I trailed off, realizing I was making excuses. “Anyways, I’m here now, so it’s all good. Where are Jake and your dad?”
As I finished speaking, I heard a voice from around the corner. “Hey there, John! We’re in the dining room!” It was the unmistakable booming voice of my Uncle Paul.
I turned to my aunt, and she said, “Let’s go say hi to everyone.”
Still standing beside me, the dogs seemed to understand her words and began escorting me toward the dining room. Aunt Fraya giggled as she walked ahead while Julie was hanging off my arm. She couldn’t decide if she wanted me to drag her or if she pulled me.
As we walked, I couldn’t help but notice the well-behaved dogs acting like my guards. They walked beside me, occasionally sniffing at my feet or hands but never pulling ahead or breaking stride with Julie and me. I was starting to wonder if they were familiars instead of pets, but my cousins being non-magical would be hard. It was clear that my aunt had put a lot of time and effort into training them.
It wasn’t far to the dining area, and as we rounded the corner, I saw my Uncle Paul sitting at the head of the table with a big grin on his face and my cousin Jake sitting with a frown. “John! Good to see you!” he said as he got up from his chair, walked up to me, and gave me a firm handshake followed by a big hug.
I hugged him back with one arm since Julie didn’t release the other. “It’s good to see you too, Uncle Paul,” I said with a smile.
Letting go of me, Uncle Paul took Julie off me as she protested and turned to Jake, saying, “Don’t be rude, son. Say hi.”
Jake got up and, with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes, walked up to me and said in a frigid tone, “Hey, John. Long time no see.”
Uncle Paul shot Jake a disapproving look before turning back to me. “I’m sure you are tired as all. I know I’m always wiped when coming to visit you guys.” Turning to his kids, he said, “Well, come on then, you two go show John to his room.” Turning to me, he added, “The guest bedroom is all set up for you. Feel free to stay as long as you want,” gesturing for us to follow.
I followed Jake and Julie, but then I remembered forgetting my bags. I told my cousins, “Hang on!” and walked quickly to where I left the backpack, bag, and the box Dad gave to give to Aunt Freya. I heard hurried paw steps behind me as I grabbed them and returned to my aunt. “Here you go. Dad asked me to pass this along for you.”
Aunt Fraya responded with a pleasant smile, “Thank you, dear. You have some time before dinner, so rest up a bit. I’ll call up when food is on the table.” I nodded and walked quickly to catch up to my cousins waiting at the stairs.
As we walked towards the guest bedroom, I couldn’t help but notice the dogs walking alongside us again as if they were our escorts. It was both amusing and worrisome at the same time. I was starting to feel like the dogs didn’t trust me. I will just need to try to buy some treats and bribe them.
Once we arrived at the guest bedroom, Jake stood by the door as Julie excitedly started chattering and pointing out all the little details that she and Aunt Fraya had worked on to make the room comfortable for me. “And here’s your extra blankets. The door locks cause the dogs like to roam sometimes, and here’s the WiFi password,” she said, handing me a slip of paper.
I looked confused at the paper. “WiFi? What’s that?”
Jake laughed for the first time. “You are practically an alien in this world. This is going to be amusing.”
I felt hurt, but I was glad we had something to discuss. “Yeah, I really am. But that’s kinda the point of this experience.”
Julie asked to hang on for a min and slipped out of the room, the dogs parting just wide enough for her to slip past them in the doorway.
I looked at Jake. “Dude, come on. We grew up together. What’s up?”
He sighed, took a few steps to the bed, and plopped on it, leaning against the wall, feet dangling over the edge. “We did, but recently I realized just how different we are. It makes it hard to be comfortable with someone always so loaded for bear.”
I looked confused at him and put my bag and backpack on the bed next to him. “What do you mean.” as I sat on the chair.
He sighed. “I mean magic. You are from a world of power, and I’m from a world of Mundane.”
I scrunched my nose. “Don’t say that. It’s not nice. And I would never do anything to hurt you or Julie or your parents.” I glanced at the dogs in the door, wondering if I should extend my promise.
Jake smiled softly. “Yeah, I’m sure not on purpose.” He paused and frowned. “But to be honest, my college rejection letter also came today. And I was sure I could get into my first choice and didn’t bother applying elsewhere.”
I looked confused at him, but Julie tore back into the room before I could respond, somehow slipping between the two dogs. “Had to steal mom’s phone. I’ll explain what WiFi is, you Luddite.”
“Hey, be nice! Don’t call him names!” Jake yelled at Julie.
“I don’t know what that is, so I’m not offended.” I shrugged.
“I don’t know either, but it would fit.” Julie chirped as she sat next to John on the bed. “WiFi is what you use to access the internet.”
I pulled my own phone out. “Oh, how do I do that?”
Julie froze. “Well, now I must go slip this before I get caught.”
From somewhere in the house, Aunt Freya’s voice, “JULIE ARIEL SMITH! Give me back my phone!”
Julie looked worried as she tore out of the room through the parting dogs to the roaring laughter from Jake and me. After laughing, I said, “I’m not sure what that means about college rejection, but I’m sorry you are going through that. I just want things to be as normal as we can. Like we were when we were kids.”
Jake briefly looked at the ceiling, thinking, “Nothing changed. And I’ll figure something out eventually about college. For now, let’s just have fun.” With a smile, he got up and said, “I’ll give you some breathing room as you settle in. Let’s catch up when we get time sometime.”
After Jake left, I waited a second to see if the dogs would go. Instead, they lay down, blocking the doorway in a way that would make me move them to leave. I sighed and turned to the bags on the bed.
I unpacked my backpack and bag, placing my clothes in the drawers. They were dimensional bags as well. So I could bring everything I could need, so I only unpacked what I would need for the next week or so. I noticed the dresser was empty except for a few spare blankets and pillows at the bottom, so I took the opportunity to spread out my clothes and organize them.
I left most of my magical equipment in the backpack. I wouldn’t need anything but my wand, the summing bracelet still on my right hand. The only thing I took out was the scroll my parents gifted me. I put it on the table, admiring the intricate design and the fine craftsmanship. I was sure they had spent much money on it, so I wanted to take care of it. Not that these were very delicate, but still.
Next, I took out the gifts I had brought for my cousins from my bag. I hid them in the drawer on the table, so they would be a surprise for later. I wanted to wrap them into something, but I would have to give them as is.
I decided to check out the rest of the room. I went to the dresser and pulled open the top drawer, which was empty like the others. Looking around the room were several pictures and paintings. What was surprising to me was that they were very still.
Curious, I turned to the two doors in the room. One was clearly a closet, and that’s the first one I walked up to and pulled open. It was a good size, with plenty of space to hang clothes and store shoes. I put my backpack and bag in there to ensure they stayed out of the way.
I then turned my attention to the other door. I opened it slowly, unsure of what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find a clean, well-maintained bathroom with a shower, sink, and toilet. The towels hanging on the rack smelled fresh. I vaguely remembered how to use this shower from the last time, and I hope it won’t be a problem.
Feeling satisfied with my new living quarters, I returned to the desk and sat down. This seemed like the perfect time to tell my parents I was safe and at my Aunts house.
I pulled my old scroll from my pocket. It was much simpler than the new one my parents had given me and was meant more for local communication. It wouldn’t have a powerful spell circle to reach my parents or friends. But it did have all the imprints and contacts from them.
I conjured the wand and pointed it at the new scroll on the table. Using the transfer spell, I could transfer my friends’ imprints from the old scroll to the new one. All three items glowed pale, and it only took a moment. Soon I saw their names appear on the new scroll, indicating they were successfully added.
As I was admiring my handiwork and ensuring that every name I wanted was transferred, I suddenly heard a voice next to me. “Was that... magic?” Julie’s voice made me jump up in my seat, my heart racing, my hand shaking holding the wand, sweat beading on my brow. She was maybe 2 feet away from him, standing just outside my field of view.
At my threatening gesture, the dogs in the doorway growled. But Julie looked at them and said, “Shush.” they did.
I steadied my breathing and said, “Yeah. I didn’t get a chance to transfer information from my old scroll to my new one.”
She pointed at my hand. “Is that a wand? Can I hold it?”
I breathed and willed the wand back into storage. “Not right now. Maybe a bit later. I can show you some tricks and magic.”
She looked disappointed but said, “Okay.” Walked over to the bed and sat down. “Mind if I hang out here for a bit?”
I shrugged. “Do you mind if I write a quick letter without distractions?” She nodded, so I sat at the table, folded the old scroll, and put it aside. I moved the new scroll closer to myself, used the quill that was part of the package, and selected my parent’s imprints.
I concentrated on the quill and started writing the letter to my parents. Since this was my first time, the quill took a few tries to obey me. In glowing letters on the scroll, I wrote about how I was safe at my aunt’s place and succeeded in making it there. I also mentioned that I had transferred the imprints of my friends onto the new scroll and that I was going to try to contact them soon. And reminded them that they could always reach out.
As I finished the letter, I read it over to ensure it said everything I wanted. Satisfied, I closed my eyes and focused my energy on the sending spell. After a second, I opened my eyes as the words on the scroll lifted off the page and folded into an owl.
The owl flew straight through the wall and into the night sky, heading towards the enclave where my aunt picked me up from, which must be the nearest relay to here.
“Wow. That’s so cool.” Julie whispered from the bed, and I turned just in time to see her cover her mouth.
I smiled and said, “Yeah, magic is pretty cool. But so is your technology. I’m going to need all your help to figure it out.” And I pulled out my phone.
She looked excited. “Oh, of course, your sensei will teach you everything.” But before she could do anything, I heard a high-pitched barking bounding down the hall outside my room.
Then a tiny fur ball jumped over the two dogs and bound towards me with the fury of a starved hellhound ready to eat. I conjured my wand, but fore I could do anything or the little hellion reached me, Julie nimbly plucked him mid-jump and held him like a baby on its back. The little beat instantly calmed down and let out a happy little whine of pleasure. The two dogs in the doorway growled their disapproval.
Julie whispered, “It’s okay. He’s a friend. No eating, my cousin.” Holding him out towards me, she said, “Sparky. Say high to John.”
Sparky wasn’t convinced of my status in the family and gave a menacing high-pitched bark and a growl. However, she stopped when Julie brought him close to herself and smacked him in the nose softly. “No!” She held him out, and this time he let out an almost friendly bark.
“Nice to meet you, Sparky,” I said, not letting go of my wand.
I breathed a sigh of relief as she brought Sparky close to herself. Sparky licked her face, and Julie giggled. I was horrified for a moment when she let him down. He landed softly on his tiny feet, made a circle, and then turned to me. For a second, I thought he would attack me and prepared to defend myself, but I had Nothing to worry about. He walked up to me, sniffed my feet, then pranced back to Julie, tongue lolling and tail wagging.
Julie laughed as she stroked Sparky’s fur. “Don’t worry, he’s harmless. He just loves to bark.”
I chuckled and replied, “Well, I’m glad to hear that. He’s pretty cute, actually. When he’s not acting like an angry furry volleyball of doom.”
Julie smiled and said, “Yeah, he’s my little buddy. He’s been with me since I was a kid. Well, I guess like 4 years now or so.” Looking at me, she asked, “Do you have any pets?”
I shook my head. “No. My parents have familiars. But when I wanted a pet, my parents told me I was immature. Then when I was mature, I didn’t have time. When I have more time, I’ll probably get a pet.”
She thought momentarily and said, “I know your mom has the owl cat. And your dad has a giant three-headed dog. I guess I was expecting you to have at least something. Maybe a cat or a dog. Or maybe something more exotic like a dragon.”
My eyebrows shot up. “A dragon? That would be cool, but they’re pretty dangerous and, you know, illegal. They are very endangered. I mean, I guess a petite dragon would be an option. But they are a lot of work.”
She looked convinced. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. Maybe you should stick with a cat or a dog, for starters.”
I laughed and glanced at the dogs in the doorway who were sitting at attention. I looked back at Julie and realized her eyes were fixed on the wand in my hand. I could see a mix of curiosity and fear in them. With a jolt, I remembered what Jake had said earlier about magic being power. I started to feel self-conscious and put the wand in storage again with a small flash of magic. Julie blinked hard and looked away.
I looked at Julie with concern as she picked up Sparky, held him close, and took a deep breath. “What’s wrong?” I asked gently, noticing the nervousness in her body language. I had no idea what I did to scare her like this.
She hesitated for a moment, looking down at Sparky on her lap. She patted him for an uncomfortably long silence before finally whispering, “I don’t know how to ask this, but... can I do magic?” Her question caught me off guard, and I wasn’t sure how to respond. She looked up at me, and I could see the fear and uncertainty in her eyes, and I wanted to reassure her.
But I couldn’t.
I took a deep breath. This was going to be a delicate conversation. I had to break the news gently. “Julie, I’m sorry to say this, but only those born with magic can use it,” I said, my voice low and even. “There are two species of humans. One with magic and one without. You know how there are different kinds of dogs?” After she nodded, I continued, “There are a few different kinds of humans as well.”
Julie’s face didn’t change. “So, I can’t do magic? You are sure?” she asked, her voice quivering.
I shook my head. “I’m afraid not,” I said, trying to sound sympathetic. “It’s just the way things are. But don’t worry, you can still do plenty of amazing things without magic.”
She looked like she was about to say something else, but we heard a voice from the door before she did. “John, food is ready.” Turning, I saw Aunt Freya. “Julie, don’t forget to wash your hands before coming to the dinner table.”
Julie didn’t say anything but turned with a smile to her mom. I got a bit of whiplash from her emotional swings but didn’t say anything. She dropped Sparky to the floor and walked out the door. She paused at the door and said, “Let’s talk later.”
The big dogs parted to let her through but moved back together. Sparky walked up to the dogs, barked shortly and jumped over the big dogs, and followed Julie.
I grabbed the gifts from the drawer I hid them in and decided to just give them as is. I walked to the door, but the dogs didn’t budge. After a second, I cleared my throat and said, “Excuse me?”
The dogs looked lazily at me but didn’t leave. I heard Aunt Fray’s voice from somewhere in the house. “Jax, Apollo, leave John alone. He’s a friend.”
The dogs growled, got up, and trotted away from the door.
I said, “Thank You,” and walked behind them, letting them lead me to the dining room.

2023.05.29 12:54 wedding_shame_wine Am I being an entitled arsehole with my wedding caterer?
I'll try and keep this as brief as possible. I am planning a wedding with my spouse to be. We had quite a high number of invitations (lots of cousins, parents' friends etc). However, we had an unexpectedly high number of drop-outs (most of our friends our own age can make it however, don't feel sorry for us). We only knew this after the caterer's six weeks' deadline for confirmation of final numbers, however, we did inform them more than a month in advance of the event that our numbers would be lower than we had told them at the deadline.
I want to be clear at this point, I DID NOT ASK FOR A REFUND, I asked if we could exchange the reduced meals required for a wine upgrade. Our event manager said they would "re-cost the event and re-allocate the funds". Great, so far so good. So basically, the services required for fewer guests was around £3,000. They came back with a basic wine upgrade that would normally cost around £1,000. They are getting to pocket the £2,000 difference as pure profit. I pointed this out (politely) and they are quoting the contract back at me. Again, I am not asking for any money to be returned to me. I haven't worked in catering, but I would have thought that swapping the wine served would be far easier than having to prepare and serve quite a few meals. I also thought alcohol markups were easy money in hospitality.
They are well within their rights to do so according to the T&Cs, but am I an entitled arsehole for thinking they could give me an exchange for an equally priced set of goods, or do I just not "get" business?

2023.05.29 11:02 itsallalittleblurry Solo Performance
Many of us from our Basic Training platoon ended up in ITS, or Infantry Training School, in California together. The next step for us, prior to being assigned to our first unit.
There was much more still to be learned than could be crammed into the three months of before. And one of the first things we learned was that the physical training of Basic, as hard as it had seemed at the time, was just the preliminary leadup to the real thing.
Basic was the introduction. ITS was where young men came to die. And sometimes you’d find yourself almost hoping that you would. Anything to make it Stop.
Most of it was enjoyable. But Noone enjoyed the runs. “Runs” is a misnomer, anyway. Those bring to mind a cadenced jog at a measured pace. But human beings were not necessarily designed for more of a full-out sprint for mile after mile. Uphill and down. Through streams and mud. Or whatever else was in the way.
With heavily weighted packs, boots and utes, full personal utility gear loadout, fastened flak jackets, two full canteens of water, helmet, and rifle carried at port arms.
Gasping for breath the whole way, with the pressure on the lungs that the weight of the pack, and the constriction of the flak jacket, would not permit to fully expand.
Running half blind sometimes from the stinging sweat in your eyes that caused many to stumble, trip, and fall. But you got back up as quickly as you could. The more time that took, the even faster and farther you’d have to run to catch up to your place in line. On legs already wreak and trembling from exhaustion and over-effort.
And the Instructors, not encumbered as we were, were there to make sure you Did catch up. A man in his hands and knees throwing up the breakfast that he had so lately consumed would find himself snatched up mid-puke, and with a shove or a kick invited to “Get your lame ass up where you fucking bekong, you weak-ass piece of shit! Move!!”
Or if someone felt like they couldn’t take one more running step: “Oh, no, you fucking don’t! You’re not gonna quit on me! Move your ass!” He might be given a running assist to get him moving at the appropriate pace again.
You learned quickly not to eat a heavy breakfast. But to drink plenty of water, starting the night before, after eating as big and starchy an evening meal as you could. You were going to need it early the next morning.
When you felt as if your legs might fail you at any moment, and that runny shit was about to start coursing down your legs. And for some, it did. They’d have more than sweat to wash off in the showers afterward. And no one would say a word.
So no one liked the runs. But they taught you the real value of willpower. Your body would do what your mind told it too, if you were determined enough. And I guess that was the whole point. What didn’t kill you made you stronger. If they tried to break you, and you decided that they weren’t going to, you became stronger still. And after you made that decision, the runs didn’t seem quite as bad as they had at first been. You Were getting stronger. But in another sense, by making that decision, you’d already won.
Wilcox was from the old platoon, as many of us were. A Minister’s son, he was one of the most amiable young men many of us had ever met. And was universally well-liked. Looked up to, even. He neither lied, cursed, drank, or smoked. And we’d never seen him so much as angry. And we all admired those traits. We knew that we were lesser than he.
Wilcox lied and cursed for the first time not long into our tenure at that place. The occasion of it the time we set up one overbearingly overbearing, unnecessarily obnoxious Sgt training instructor to take the fall for something We purposefully did.
Details unimportant, and a story into itself, but he got blamed, and faced the ire of the SSgt on overall charge of us for having taken things a little too far. Which he hadn’t - We had. But he habitually Did, so fuck him anyway.
The SSgt listened to our blatant lies and accusations as Sgt Evergreen correctly stammered protestation of his innocence. Then he looked to the only one of us whose word he knew he could trust. And we knew we were cooked.
“Wilcox, was he the one who did this shit?”
“Yes he was. He was on a rampage, SSgt.”
“Sgt Evergreen, in my office!”
“But - “
“Now!”
What just happened? We were astonished. We wouldn’t have held it against Wil in the least. He’d have just been telling the truth, after all.
“We appreciate you backing us up, bro.”
“Fuck that bastard” he answered with a beatific smile. “The sonofabitch had it coming.”
And we were all surprised for the second time that day. It seemed that Wilcox was a work in progress.
The conclusion of the transformation occurred on the night of our successful graduation from the program. Next stop, our first assignments. And we could hardly wait! A night for celebration! And celebration did we do. And so did Wilcox. The rest of us marveled at the capacity of intake of one so unaccustomed to it.
And then he bummed his first smoke.
And then he made his unsteady way to the raised stage at one end of the place, weaving among the tables. Crawled on all fours up onto it. Pulled himself to his feet again with the aid of the mic stand. Had a brief discussion with the lead singer. Who then handed over the mic had stepped back.
And Wilcox belted out every verse of a particular humorous ditty that no one has ever sung in church, and that would cause one to be doused in gasoline and set on fire at any feminist rally.
Handed back the mic. Bowed to scattered applause. Crawled backwards down off the stage again. Began to make his now even less steady way back to us. And passed out cold.
Wilcox had made it home.

2023.05.29 10:40 Berjan2 I cant seem to truely chose my conviction and state by will
How can I truely embrace full faith? Is it truely created by the self or given?
I have been on the journey for a while now. My change from a materialism worldview to this view did not come from the intenet. The year it happened was a very bad year, I broke up with the only girl I loved 100% and who felt like home. The break up and the cause is a whole different story. One theme of the relationship was that she was christian and I was an atheist. After the break up I asked God to prove he exists by bringing her back to me.
Now this is 3 years ago. Ofcourse I felt bad and in a state of lack during this time. But I heard psychedelics could help moving on and they did give me clarity. 1 out of the 5 of trips I did the following year shocked my world tho. A divine intervention (neville goddards promise?).
Time stood still and I could stop breathing. I lost identification with my body. I saw a purple female entity. She touched me and I felt infinite love. She told me when I truely believe anything is possible. In a stunning voice she said ‘Do you get it now?’.
After this event I could litterally chose what I believe as the memory of it was still fresh. Now months after this I learned about neville and got back into the teachings of jesus. I manifested with ease the months and maybe the year after this. My sp returned several times but the hurt was to big to keep her. So my faith was strong untill the event happened. When I was about to see her tention was to high and I would be negative to her or ignore her.
Now my biggest succes related to her: Over a year after the breakup she got a new boyfriend. I persisted by imagining her saying ‘I never loved anyone like I loved you’. During this process I doubted several times. Once I doubted God a lot and then a bible verse came into my mind ‘do not harden your hearths’. A day later my mother returned from hospital and she read the bible during dinner (she is christian). She read exactly that text. After this I gained full faith again.
Out of nowhere after cutting all contacts, including with mutual friends and family she came to my brothers birthday (he felt the need to invite her after not seeing her for a year and her being my ex). This was 2 years after the break up.
She said the exact words: ‘I never loved anyone like I loved you’ and the 3p was gone. The bridge of incidents took about 6 months. Now I became angry at her for comming back into my life, so this is the last time I saw her. I made her cry. The year after this my intentions only came into fruition when I was in a desired state, when I let go, but nothing related to her. Those successes during the desired states are related to my selfconcept. For example hot girls in the club hitting on me. Very superficial stuff. The funny thing is that when I lose this state a few days after the conviction about my high self concept is gone too. I havent built a stable ground. Those states seem to come and go like they are given.
I still long for her. All other girls I dated after her (2 for half a year and several shorter dates) felt way less. Now I feel like a failure on this sp mission. When I dream about her most of the times it is about the large distance between us and me not being able to get closer to her or even get in touch with her. Last week I actually had a positive one that showed us being back together. I notice that dreams say a lot.
Now there are a lot of issues that I encounter now regarding manifestation: I have a hard time imagining me being with her when I am in a lower state. The vizualisation that includes her does hurt me somehow then. How is this possible?
Is there annother way to go about this? Have you encountered this and still succeeded, did you change the feeling? How do we change the state by will? By this I mean the true conviction by will.
Because it seems like I cant choose my feelings anymore. I wish I had the same faith I had earlier on. But also back then it seems like it was given as the mystical experience I had came as an absolute shock.
Also because of the events that happened and guided me somehow (especially during the egoless state), I start to think that it isnt just me but that there actually is a higher form guiding me through life, which we could call God. What do you think about this?

2023.05.29 10:27 Antlion1001 [Complete] [75k] [Speculative/Commercial Fiction] The Myrmecoleon Act 1
I'm looking for beta readers who are interested in reading a series. This posting is for the first book, but there are three more I would like the same beta readers to read. There's no rush on the timeline. I'm just looking for commitment/consistency.
Before getting to the details of the story, here's why I'm looking for long-term beta readers. I'm a journalist who discovered I enjoy storytelling more than vitriolic/formulaic reporting. I started this fiction story years ago as a creative outlet and kept at it. My confidence increased and I eventually thought, "Yeah, this is pretty decent stuff." I submitted excerpts of this story to Johns Hopkins for their MFA in creative writing. Next thing I know, I get an acceptance letter and an invitation for more student loans. I start in August.
TLDR: I'm trying to get a head start on a grad school by hearing what readers have to say about my writing. Specifically, the fiction series that got me into grad school. With a little luck, maybe even have it published one day.
Here's the gist of the story. I'm still fine-tuning it.
A young Ethiopian boy named Shango wakes beneath darkened skies and in his family's refugee tent as war rages around him. Across the desert and in a distant military camp, two men, a soldier and a combat photographer, grapple with what the world has become. All of them are unaware it will be their last day living in it. An event occurs and ends their world. Time is rewound and twisted, but the process is not clean. Nor painless. Memories, dreams, and thoughts follow those sent back. Millenia later, Shango emerges from the Redux event, alone and lost. He is discovered by a diverse group of soldiers who serve the nation-state founded by other survivors of the event. Survivors like Shango, those who came before, have the power to shape and influence the world around them. Sometimes through clairvoyance. Sometimes through violent abilities. One of the oldest, most dangerous, and most impulsive survivors is a man who goes by the alias "Antlion." Antlion emerged from the Redux divide at the very beginning. He was present as the world reformed from the memories and beliefs – the magical dreams and hellish nightmares – of everyone alive at the moment of Redux. To the angels and demons of the new world, he is called The Myrmecoleon. A dichotomous creature that shouldn't exist. But to Shango, he is something far, far worse. His new caretaker.
Contents warnings include: language, violence, suspense, body-horror, sexual themes, and minor alcohol/drug usage. Your typical Friday night, basically.
I'm looking for beta readers to read for the story. Don't worry about line edits. Let me know your thoughts on story flow, characters, scenes, and descriptions. Tell me why you enjoyed or didn't enjoy things. Is this story comparable to another book, author, or show you know of? Tell me the stuff you'd say to friends or a book club.
My timeline is very open, but I would prefer feedback within a month for this book. The story was written episodically. So I can send over episodes with natural breaks instead of the entire book if that helps with scheduling. I would really appreciate having female beta readers too, as most of the input so far has come from men. But I won't turn anyone away who is interested. One friend who read the whole thing equated the story to a literary anime, if that helps potential readers understand what they're getting into.
Last but not least, I am available for some critique swapping. But be aware my background is in JOURNALISM. My line editing and critiques have been known to draw blood. I'll tell you what's good, but I'll also tell you what's bad and why.
If anyone is interested or has questions, send me a PM. Thanks.
Oh, and happy Memorial Day for U.S. people.

2023.05.29 10:11 ItCouldBeWorse_1 Needing some help with the thoughts.
I am reposting cause I thought I just needed to vent but I think I need help with everything going on in the brain.
Well 2 and a half years of a relationship has ended yesterday. I will start off by saying I know that this is only my side of the story but no matter how much I sit here and try to be logical I don’t understand what I did to deserve this. Well let’s just say this relationship wasn’t the best looking back on it. We broke up a total of 3 times (probably should have been just 2). The first time was a month into the relationship. I have a really hard time with liars and she knew this. I stated at the beginning I could not be with her if she was a liar. Well one month in we took my sister trick or treating for Halloween, afterwords we were supposed to go to a party. We ended up deciding not to go and after a night of chilling she decided to go home. She texted me when she got “home” that she was home and she was going to bed. She ended up going to the party without me. After some investigation on my end I found out nothing really happened and she even slipped up and told me she went to the party about a week after. Well after a couple weeks apart we talked and ended up getting back together. Fast forward about 2 years now we were never perfect but I loved her and it always seemed she loved me. Well she ended up getting pregnant and told me after she had told her friend and cousin and apparently someone else. When I found out/she told me, she said she already has the abortion planned and is going the day before our anniversary. I reacted the only way I knew how to I offered her money to help with the situation and didn’t protest. I was truly gutted and destroyed on the inside. Over the next couple weeks I tried my best to shower her with love and affection. She ended up getting the abortion and I ended up “forgiving” and moving past it for the sake of our relationship. A trip was planned shortly after the abortion by her family to go the a wine tasting vacation right after Christmas. Well she invited me since it would be a family + significant others trip. A month goes by and I hadn’t heard much about the trip so I decided to ask while we were eating dinner “what time do we leave for the flight?”. I was then told actually since you don’t really like wine I invited my friend to go. This ended up with us getting into an argument over the fact that my feelings have consistently been hurt and not thought of. This leads to break up number 2. She contacts me a month later stating that she was wrong and that she hopes I can at least forgive her. We eventually agree to be exclusive to each other and not be officially dating but work on us. Well that eventually lead to us getting back together and honestly the 5-6 months we were back together were amazing until the last month. I struggled in school and stopped going to the gym and my mental health took a very bad turn. I told her about my mental health being awful and she seemed supportive. When I told her that was Sunday night, Tuesday my mom called me and told me she was diagnosed with breast cancer (we later found out it is stage one) and my thoughts just got even worse. My ex and I ended up going out for dinner the following week and we talked more about everything. I ended up saying that I would rather self pleasure then to have intimacy with her right now. I understand how hurtful this is and how insecure it could make someone feel. While this doesn’t make it right I was emotionally distraught. I understand that sounds like an excuse I simply wanted to explain my lapse in clear judgement. Well all seemed fine till I started to notice a decline in our conversations which wasn’t completely abnormal but we had talked about it before and were “working” on it. This sparked break up number 3 we eventually broke it off after she called and said she couldn’t forgive me even though it was a mistake and she couldn’t see me the same (this is referring to the intimacy comment). Then she said she wanted to break up but then back peddled and decided on a break. I told her the next day the break wouldn’t work and that we are better going our separate ways since I need a partner that will stick with me through thick and thin. I understand that I am not perfect and may not have been the best boyfriend but I don’t believe I deserved this. Thanks for reading I just needed to get this off my chest.
