Struggling with contrast paints

2023.06.04 15:36 snoopy_tha_noodle2 Struggling with contrast paints

Struggling with contrast paints
Hi I’m getting into Kill Team and the guy at the store recommended contrast paints to paint them because “they’re great for beginners”. Trusting this guy I figured out the color scheme I wanted and spent a bunch of money on contrast paints. Unfortunately I’m really struggling with them.
The paints come out very splotchy and look really bad. This is very apparent on certain colors. Militarum Green and Basilicanum Grey are particularly bad. I’m new to painting in general but Basilicum Grey seems like such a bad color all around I’m shocked it passed QA. I’ve tried a bunch of different things like shaking the bottles for five minutes, different brush strokes, different amounts of paint on the brush, varying brush dampness, and different colors of primer all with the same results, a splotchy mess.
Oddly Skeleton Horde is fantastic and I could definitely see using it in the future even if I move away from contrast.
So yeah if I just bought a few pots I’d just curse the guy that recommended them to me and move on to something different but I bought quite a few and I’m willing to give it some more tries.
So what am I doing wrong?

2023.06.04 15:12 Glacial_Shield_W Rhyme Scheme

Author's Note: This was not originally the second poem I intended to post here, but one of the poems I commented on recently, discussing complexity for complexity's sake, and challenging yourself rather than going basic, made me want to share. I agree it can be hard to swallow people prefering simplicity. However, complexity also needn't be rewarded. Sometimes, you just need to challenge yourself for your own confidence and growty, not for approval. Complexity and enjoyability as a read are not directly correlated. However, if possible, please, enjoy.
Rhyme Scheme
Sometimes I don't know where I'm going when I begin to ramble, Sometimes I just feel like I'm tired of being caught up in the scramble.
I just want to put my thoughts on a page, And not have to worry about having to act my age.
I want to scream, I want to be obscene.
I don't want to be judged, Or to be coaxed and nudged.
I'm so tired of people opining that you can't have an opinion, It makes me want to open the inkwell and stick my pen in.
And overflow the page with my thoughts, To show how it feels to constantly have your mond tied in knots.
To have your heart and brain betray your hand, To crack another sarcastic joke that fails to land.
I don't need to feel like a saint, But somedays I want to drench this world in artistic paint.
Make it black or make it red, Sometimes I just need to detox and get this shit out of my head.
Clean out the clogged up attic, And fire a shot at some prick who pissed me off, while I'm at it.
It isn't right, it isn't wrong, But ya, if you want to fight, I'll write you into a song.
I am able to get physical, But I would rather kepe it on a page and continue to be quizzical.
Like, how can I say what I need, In a way that will still get people to read?
What if I bend a word here, Or combine some words there, would anyone even care?
What if I get complex? Am I really in a rut if what I utter is a common hex?
Or should I say, what if I swear when I flex? Is it fair if my words cause some people to become jibbering wrecks?
What if I self censor? But then, eventually I snap, and everything gets tenser?
And no, that isn't a word, Let it go, if you really want to rhyme, you have to let language get blurred.
Not everything sounds right phonically, So, you gotta mash the words together like they aren't just together platonically.
Screw them around, Brew them into a sound.
Give them a shake, Take out a line break.
Cut the sentence in two, Changing the tense will do.
It's better to just let the emotion flow, You don't gotta follow the letter, the motion will grow.
By the way, that was a triple rhyme, Because sometimes I just get tired of saying the dribble that comes to me on a dime.
And it is almost funny how many people will miss it, They miss the honey and only hear the whining from the steeple of the misfit.
And you are damn right that I can offend, If I let people tell me what not to say, their rant would continue into the night and never end.
Because if it isn't the progressives I upset, it will be the conservatives. Either get verbally aggressive, or live my life like I gotta serve to live.
I just need something to make me feel alive, Why fall to lust or greed when I can come sting a fake by being the real deal, while catching my strive.
Because they won't take a moment to notice that you just rhymed almost every word, They have no trust that I will take the time to go absurd.
They just see that the end of each sentence echoes the last, Then they remind me without a compliment or pretense that my spelling was off, like I even asked.
And don't get me wrong, I can take criticism, I'm just more worried about the song and the lyricism.
I'm a fan of the game, And once I learn how to not just be a stan, it will never be the same.
I'm not crashing out for any pipe dream, Hashing it out until it's ripe is my scheme.
Because I'm not learning for the money or the fame, I'm just yearning to to be funny, while staying sane.
I'm just a tired jerk, launching a firework in the sky, And I'm so wired that it doesn't feel like work, and it helps me not to cry.
It will burn bright in the night, Then fade before the early light.
There will be flair and contradiction, Generally I don't care whether or not you think it is fact or fiction.
Hopefully someone will enjoy the read, Rope-a-dope, like a pulley you employ to bring you what you need.
And if some people can see me through the smoke, If some people notice there is truth behind every joke.
That's fine, But I will still be smashing gnats who cross the line.
Because it is one thing to stick to being humble, But it's another to let people kick you every time that you stumble.
They don't know this is just practice, And I won't stop continuing to grow until I hack this.
And in the end, I said nothing here, it was just for fun, I was just bluffing, shaking off the rust for the fun.
Stay on my good side and there won't be a price to pay, I'm done being snide, so have a nice day.

SCENE Seven:
Week seven has arrived and I am still having brief time on the bench. However, with the time I was able to sit at the bench I completed the painting and detailing of the canopy and windscreen. I also finished the nose gear door. I really like the Molotow chrome paint pens. I used it on the canopy mirrors and the landing light. The fuselage had some small painting to be done on the formation lights. I also built the centerline drop tank and finished it off with painting and decals. I added the placard decals to the MK-83 bombs as well.
Next I started the decaling of the fuselage. I am using a mix of the kit decals for the standard markings and the custom decals I made for the movie scheme. Hoping to finish this build over the next week but we will see how much bench time I can get this week.

2023.06.04 12:23 Dazzler_3000 Can you equip full skins/outfits?

Sometimes when you open a chest/crate you'll get a full BD skin or Cal outfit rather than specific parts.
Is there anyway to equip the entire thing rather than manually selecting the antenna, head, body, legs and then paint job?
Applying the body parts is easy enough as they're named but I've seen a few skins with colour schemes I liked but when I go to make it I can't remember what the exact colours were (and even then it's a bit of a pain manually doing each layer).
Thanks

2023.06.04 10:38 Kylarus Recently received a bunch of painting advice

Recently received a bunch of painting advice
I received a bunch of painting advice that seems pretty useful for painting Comstar and similar mechs, as well as mixing and paint brighter colors. Since that post is no longer available, I'm reposting the relevant info with sources here so others can benefit from them.

u/GuestCartographer
Probably Lothern Blue and Fulgrim Pink if you (like me) have local games shops that only stock Citdael paint.
Edit: Maybe Crystal Blue and Pixie Pink if you’ve got Army Painter in stock. Though those might be a touch too dark.

u/Menarra
My Merc company uses those colors for their emblem, I've got some basic acrylics from DecoArt from my local craft shop that do well. Pretty sure it's light pink, light blue, and white

u/GuestCartographer
These days, you probably wouldn’t use ink.
I think the optimal shade would come from a Contrast Paint/SpeedPaint that’s been thinned down with Contrast Medium.
Gryff-Charger Grey and Dreadful Visage, maybe?

u/Dr_McWeazel
Honestly? I wouldn't even bother with inks, just mix the pink with a red, the sky blue with a darker blue, and the white with a light grey, then run each of those colors into the appropriate recesses the way one would with a typical recess shade. Easy? Maybe not, but it'll look damn fine. Or you could just shade them all with a very thinned dark blue, like Drakhenov(sp?) Nightshade from Citadel or the much more simply named Blue Tone from The Army Painter. Except, you know, thin it down even more. Then relayering these pastel colors should be pretty easy.
That said, while I understand the idea behind the color choices here, I think the paint job would look much better were everything substantially more vibrant - hot pinks, strong blues, and, uh... Well, I guess white doesn't get much more vibrant than it already is. These colors just don't look as saturated as I think I'd want, but that's probably just me.

u/Thaemir
I'd apply a second base coat after the wash avoiding recesses, so you get the shading of the wash and the brightness of the basecoat. Then lighting and done

u/kael_sv
The white is the hard part. If you're not airbrushing, I've found applying a dark grey (for cool) or sepia (for warm) wash on top of light primer, and using drybrush layers of ivory or off white, and then if wanted you can line pr highlight the panels in true white. It's at least consistent and has a little bit of a worn look built in. Not for pristine clean comstar white though.
Then you can pick layers of your choice for the other colours on top of your new white base.

u/LightningDustt
White scar can work but I'd recommend something slightly grayer. Ulthuan grey is usually my white color of choice

u/CMMiller89
That gives you room for edge highlights too. If you go too bright for your base you’ve got nowhere else to go.

u/Kyler999
https://preview.redd.it/d70nrekcqy3b1.jpg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ab018060fe2889bb132c45e40764d7e6acb88af
u/MaxGene
Maybe Reaper’s Braaains Pink and Marid Blue?
u/hfdjasbdsawidjds
https://old.reddit.com/Sigmarxism/comments/12qi9f4/trans_pride_color_scheme_sister_of_battle_paint/
Here is a good starting point for the recipes to get the colours you want.

u/great_triangle
> My favorite pink is Vallejo squid pink, 2-3 thin coats over primer. For the blue, I'd suggest a sky blue over an ultramarine base coat, possibly with some white mixed in.
As for the white details, a white base coat followed a wash and dry brushing would likely look good
u/_1LostMuffin
> A light primer followed by a base coat of white. From there pick out where the blue and pink panels will be and you're done. For specific paints, no idea I just kinda eyeball it

u/AeniasGaming
> Not sure about the pink, but maybe Baharroth Blue? Used some for my Psychomancer a while ago, I think it’s a fairly similar shade.

u/The-suzzy
> To paint my marauder I used a wite primer, white base coat, bright pink and white mixed 5 to 1 and ultramarine blue mixed with white 50:50
https://preview.redd.it/h57dv1alqy3b1.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8d04d6ffe9b9a868207cd94761601b563f82444c

u/Mechsae
>Seen someone on twitter share a pallet that might work
Base colors: Vallejo's electric blue, Vallejo squid pink, and Citadel ulthuan grey
Wash with a nuln oil and vallejo thinner, tMIX 1:5
Highlight by mixing Vallejo foundation white into the three base colors
Apparently the secret to painting white is to just paint light grey and highlight it white.

He’s also a struggling inventor having made his web-shooters himself and trying to get an internship anywhere so far only really finding opportunities with Professor Connors and Dr.Octavius since he doesn't wanna work at Oscorp at all. He's really interested in music, he's a really big fan of the Mary Janes though he hasn't really met anyone that's in the band he has sat down and watched some of their performances and from has developed a bit of a crush on the drummer of the band who turns out to be one of his best friends Gwen Stacy… though he’ll probably never tell her. He likes listening to music and has a specific playlist made for whenever he's web-slinging which mainly consists of songs by JVKE. He likes reading comic books a lot some of his favorite characters being The Flash and Nightwing(since Spider-Man comics don’t exist in his universe) and he can get lost in whatever he's reading or doing sometimes not really paying attention to much else. He likes standing up for the little guy, which sounds cliche as all hell but he was once the little guy and knows how it feels, he knows he has to get back up so he does… not for him but for the people he needs to protect. Dislikes: He dislikes constantly being late for school, which feels weird to him considering the fact that he can get across the city in a few minutes, he is just always late when getting specifically there. He really dislikes math class which isn't cause he's bad at it, in fact, he's the one with the best grades in the class he just dislikes it because of how his math teacher tries treating him like he doesn't know anything. He dislikes supervillains (obviously) constantly attacking him and berating him on pretty much a daily basis and he dislikes Oscorp even though he's best friends with Harry Osborn Iq: 237 Era(Time Period): 21st Century(Present date)
Capabilities
Abilities: Peter has strength and agility that stand far above those of the average human, allowing him to lift nearly 200 times his body weight and to leap and move at incredible speeds with high accuracy. He also heals faster than normal when injured, though he is not completely immune to viruses and other human ailments. Weapons: His only weapons are his web shooters which he uses to swing around from place to place and web enemies and objects when necessary. So far he has developed a few different types of webbing in his shooters, one that dissolves over time, an electric web, and a concussive web that's incredibly dense. Other than that his only other weapon is his fists and his brain. Rankings: N/A
Backstory: Alright, let's do this one last time… I was born in Queens, New York where I still live now. Growing up I was a pretty average kid, just smarter than the rest. Me and my uncle had a great relationship and hung out most of the time, even though my mother and he drifted apart slowly, my uncle was really the biggest person in my life… I lost my parents at a young age and ended up moving in with my aunt and uncle, which I guess turned my life around. I was out on a trip with my class for school when I got bit by a radioactive spider, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I became the one and only Spider-Man, and I lost some people… namely my uncle who turned out to be one of the two prowlers of my universe and sacrificed his own life to save me… telling me to always get back up and to remember that “with great power comes a need to do good…” not for myself but for other people too. I'm best friends with Harry Osborn, who I consequently ended up saving when he turned himself into a giant raging lizard which was… something for sure. And I guess I just patrol the city now, fighting villains and saving people, and on the off chance that I'm not really doing hero stuff, I'm out there working with Pete at our internship with Dr.Octavius or attending some extra classes with Mr.Conners…(Or I'm watching some performances by The Mary Janes) So for now I am the one and only Spider-Man… or so i thought-

2023.06.04 08:47 TheDead_007 What paints to use?

Hi Guys, Its me again. I hope that making a second post about paints asking for help in 2 days isnt considered spam. So, I think I got off on the wrong foot yesterday and wasnt open enough to advice.
So, to start again, I have been doing scale modeling for a while now and would like to try 40k minis now, since I was able to find a Hobbyshop close to me, where people regularly play Warhammer 40k and Ive been reading 40k Books for years now.
I would like to start out with the Veteran Guardsmen Kill Team, and need to buy paints for that, since my model paint collection is woefully inadequate for 40k. If possible I would like to buy something like one of these the Army Painter or Vallejo Colour sets, as I dont know if I will be sticking to the death korps and would like a rather complete colour Palette instead of having to go paint shopping again, should I decide to try out another faction with a completely different colour scheme.
What do you think about the Army PainteVallejo colour sets? Are they good for painting 40k stuff? Do I maybe have to buy extra metallics sets?
Also, feel free to call me out on it, should this be an completely stupid idea for buying colour for 40k, Ive only got scale model experience on tanks and aircraft, and with those buying a more or less complete military colour Palette and then just mixing should I need something I didnt have worked reasonably well, imo.
Im very thankful for any advice you might have for a beginner like me! Have a nice day!

2023.06.04 07:53 Smoke14TS Trading Paints Not Updating

Hey Everyone,
Would love to know if anyone has had an issue where Trading Paints doesn’t update others schemes. Mine just started happening a few days ago. I’ll join a session and my scheme will show up but no one else’s will. I’ve tried uninstalling TP, iR, I’ve actually downloaded betterTP and tried running that but nothing works. Hell, I even reset my whole damn pc.
Just curious if anyone has had this issue and any clue how to fix it. Thanks.

2023.06.04 07:21 slightly__sketchy Trek Fuel EXe vs Transition Relay Demo Review

Trek Fuel EXe vs Transition Relay Demo Review
I'm shopping for a new lightweight eMTB and I've narrowed it down to the Trek Fuel EXe, Transition Relay, Specialized Turbo Levo SL, and the Orbea Rise. I have no idea where to demo the Specialized and the new Orbea isn't available yet, so I took the opportunity to demo both the Fuel EXe and the Transition Relay.
  • BUILD & PRICE:
    • I rented the Trek in the 9.5 build with Shimano SLX drivetrain and brakes, no-name 29" alloy wheels, an alloy bastem, a RockShox 35 Gold, and a RockShox Deluxe Select+ shock.
      • This build is $6,500 and the Fuel EXe only comes in a carbon frame. They go all the way up to like $14k with XX AXS and high end suspension. Their $8,700 Shimano XT build seems to have reasonable components (RockShox Lyrik Select + which is basically the Lyrik Ultimate but without the buttercups, XT brakes/drivetrain, carbon wheels, and carbon bastem) and spec compared to the Transition build at the same price.
    • I rented the Transition in their PNW Carbon XO build with the Sram XO transmission, TRP DH-R Evo brakes, alloy bastem, Fox Factory 38 Grip 2, Fox DHX coil shock, RaceFace Aeffect R alloy wheels in mixed/mullet size.
      • This build is $11,000 and has a carbon frame, alloy models top out at $8,000 and carbon starts at $8,700 with basic/middle of the road Fox/Sram components and alloy bawheels. Compared to the Trek's XT build this one is heavy and doesn't make much sense.
  • MOTOR:
    • The Trek uses the TQ HPR50 motor with 50Nm and 300 watts of power.
      • The TQ is probably the smoothest ebike motor I've ever felt. So far I've ridden TQ, Fazua, Specialized, Magura, and RadPower (no idea what they use). The TQ felt unbelievably natural, and better than any of the previously mentioned as far as power delivery and torque sensor performance. No spikes in power output, no overrun, it just felt like it was easier to pedal uphill and the torque sensor worked flawlessly. It was very easy to maintain a constant cadence so my analog buddy didn't fall behind. Technical climbing sections were very manageable with this motor.
      • Motor was extremely quiet, almost imperceptible by me or anyone else on the trail.
      • The controller and display were also super neatly integrated and very intuitive, with the display providing tons of helpful information like battery %, range in miles, range in time, and motohuman power output.
      • I was pleasantly surprised at how powerful it felt in even 100w eco mode. A 1700 foot climb left me barely sweating. 200w and 300w modes were great for steeper sections.
    • The Transition Relay uses the Fazua Ride 60 with 60Nm and 450 watts (in 12 second boost mode).
      • Unfortunately the Fazua was not very refined. Start pedaling and a second or so later there was a jerk as the power kicked on which lurched the bike forward slightly and made a noise. The torque sensor was not tuned well and I was constantly having to adjust force applied to the pedals to maintain a slow speed so my analog buddy didn't fall behind. I could not maintain a constant cadence or it would take off leaving him behind. Don't get me wrong, the power was nice and it was fast uphill, but it was not refined. Technical climbing was more difficult because of the abrupt power changes of this motor and I messed up several sections because of this.
      • The motor was quiet, but I could certainly hear a faint whine most of the time. When coasting the motor clicks like the pawls of a freehub.
      • The controller is terrible, it's this cheap plasticky twist thing that isn't super intuitive and can stick in place shutting off the bike unintentionally. I accidentally turned off the bike several times because of this and accidentally changed modes several times.
      • The "display" is just 5 dots for remaining battery that were green, blue, or purple for each mode. It showed nothing else. This also lifted up to reveal a USB-C port, but it was full of dirt and did not look water tight.
  • BATTERY:
    • The Trek has a 360Wh battery.
      • This lasted surprisingly long. We did 3000 feet of climbing/descending over the course of ~4.5 hours and it used about 60% of the total capacity. I was riding mostly in 100w eco, with short stints in 200w and 300w. My legs and arms were totally beat at this point so I was satisfied. Trek has an available 160Wh range extender which would definitely make it like a 6000+ foot adventure day bike. I'd like to get more time on the bike in 200w and 300w modes to see how long it lasts on like a quick sprint after work.
    • The Transition has a 430Wh battery.
      • This also lasted pretty long, but since the display had only 5 dots I was only able to tell that I had used about half of the battery after climbing/descending about 2400 feet over 4 hours. This was also in the lowest power mode for most of that.
  • WEIGHT:
    • The Trek build that I rode was 44 pounds (the 9.5 build). It felt surprisingly light and handled very well in corners, in the air I could certainly feel it but it wasn't unmanageable. The more expensive builds are quite a bit lighter in the 39 to 42 pound range.
    • The Transition build that I rode was definitely heavier than the Trek. It is quoted at 45.5 pounds on their site, but it felt more than 1.5 pounds heavier than the Trek. I felt it in the air for sure.
  • GEOMETRY:
    • I won't go into a ton of detail here, but both have a 460mm reach in the size mediums that I tested. I'm 5'9" and 160 pounds. The Transition has a slacker head tube angle by about 1.2 degrees at 63.3 degrees which I definitely noticed, especially in tighter corners and uphill switchbacks - it tripped me up a few times for sure.
  • RIDE THOUGHTS:
    • The Trek was surprisingly capable for only having 150/140mm of travel (you can fit a 160mm fork without voiding the warranty, the shock can be overstroked by 5mm to 152mm rear travel but I think that probably voids the warranty). I felt extremely comfortable with the geometry of this bike. The rear suspension felt supportive but not overly firm/harsh. I sent that thing down chunky black tech/flow trails all day and it handled it just fine. I certainly wanted a better fork/shock but it was a rental so that was fine. The 29" wheels didn't hold me back on technical climbing sections, tight switchbacks, or anything like that. It was actually my first time riding a 29er and I really enjoyed it. The bike felt heavyish but not too bad and was definitely manageable. Cornering felt good and it was pretty poppy/playful for an ebike. I only got to test a couple of jumps on it but it felt good and not too heavy in the air. It was very quiet without any discernible rattles or clunks. The components were okay, I'd definitely get better brakes/wheels/tires but SLX drivetrain is fine for how cheap it is.
    • The Transition had a loud rattling noise coming from inside it (the battery/motowiring I'd assume) which was disconcerting. I had a really hard time vibing with the geometry of this bike. I couldn't seem to place my bodyweight properly and this resulted in some weird lines and a slip or two, and I'm not the greatest at cornering in the first place but I felt less confident on this bike. This was also my first time riding a long/slack bike with mullet wheels and a coil so that was an adjustment. Having 170/170mm travel felt like it could do anything, but I haven't really enjoyed Fox forks in the past and this one was no exception to that - too much stiffness in the initial stroke resulted in a lot of chatter through the handlebars and my arms are really sore from that. The rear definitely stuck to the ground really well with the coil shock. The TRP brakes were amazing, possibly too amazing because I was not used to the power. This bike was certainly heavier and less playful, though the few jumps I did felt really good. Handling the bike in the air was tricky because of the weight. The new Sram XO transmission felt good but not $2000 good - I did not think it felt revolutionary and there's no way in hell I'd spend that much on a drivetrain on a future bike. Sure the shifts were crispy and you could down/upshift under power but I still don't think it was worth how much they ask for that thing.
  • LOOKS:
    • IMO the new Trek Fuel EX and EXe look super sexy and I love the color options they have. The paint appeared to be very high quality and the blue color I rode was gorgeous. Most people on the trail didn't recognize the fact that I was riding an ebike because the TQ motor is tiny and hidden behind the chainring.

  • The Transition looks very Transition and was definitely more noticeable as an ebike. I like the looks and colors, but it didn't have the polish that the Trek did and the paint was not as high quality.

Overall, I was already leaning towards the Trek but now I've made a final decision and will be picking up the Trek next weekend since I found the exact build/color I want within a couple hour drive. The motor was just so much more refined and made the experience feel more like an enhanced mountain biking experience than an ebiking experience that's slightly lighter. The Transition is just too expensive for the level of refinement that you get from the Fazua system. If the Transition's cheaper builds came in carbon and with better components than I might reconsider, but still the motor system was not great enough to justify the expense IMO.
