2023.05.29 17:42 jaysornotandhawks 2023 IIHF Men's World Rankings (full chart!), and 2026 Olympic starting points
Source:
IIHF.
You won't understand this post unless you understand how the IIHF World Rankings work. Perhaps later today or this week I'll put out a post on how the rankings work, so that I can keep linking back to it rather than having to explain it every year. Also, Another post about the Women's World Ranking will be put out after their last tournament - Division 1A - is completed in August. Women's Olympic qualification starting points are decided at the end of next year. The 2023 Men's IIHF season is now over! We now know the official rankings of each team.
Point Values:
Tournament | 2022 Ranking Value | 2023 Ranking Value |
2023 Worlds | | 100% |
2022 Worlds | 100% | 75% |
2022 Olympics | 100% | 75% |
2021 Worlds | 75% | 50% |
2020 Worlds | 50% | 25% |
2019 Worlds | 25% | |
For the cancelled 2020 tournament, points were given based on seed. For 2021, where every division except the top level was cancelled, points were given based on Pre-Championship Report ranking. Below is the table that includes each team's ranking from this year as well as last year, and the points earned in each individual year.
I've also included a column for Olympic seed, to see who starts where for Olympic qualifying.
- Olympic seeds given here assume that every country who is eligible to participate, does.
- Where a country chooses not to participate or where they cannot participate, everyone ranked below them moves up.
Final 2023 IIHF Men's World Rankings: Final 2023 IIHF Men's World Rankings, top 37 countries Final 2023 IIHF Men's World Rankings, countries 38-58 Notes: - This year, there was a slight change: The gold medallist now gets 1600 points instead of 1200, with all gaps between each placement remaining the same (1560 for silver etc). This is to allow for new teams to join at the bottom.
- As in previous years, Russia and Belarus were given points based on their ranks in the Pre-Championship Report.
- I cannot yet prove this, but Georgia appears to have been disqualified from Division 2A (if I had to guess, likely due to the use of ineligible players). This, along with North Korea's withdrawal from Division 3A, gives both countries 0 points for this year. Both are also relegated.
And with these rankings, we now see who starts where for Olympic qualifying! In this post, I'm only going to include the final round of qualification as well as the main Olympic tournament.
- In this section, numbers in parentheses given are Olympic seeds, NOT World Ranking.
- This assumes the IOC upholds the bans of Russia and Belarus.
Projected Final Round of Men's Olympic Qualification: Each group is hosted by the top seed. Group D: | Group E: | Group F: |

Qualifier 6 | Qualifier 5 | Qualifier 4 |
Qualifiers 4-6 are determined by the teams who finish first in their respective groups in the Third Round of Qualification. The winners of these three groups will advance as Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2 and Qualifier 3, in the order that they are ranked in the World Ranking (
i.e. the highest advancing seed would be Qualifier 1, while the lowest is Qualifier 3). These three teams advance to the...

2023.05.29 17:33 autotldr Hong Kong foreign press club raises concerns over unexplained media bans at gov't events
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 70%. (I'm a bot)
Hong Kong's Foreign Correspondents' Club has raised concerns after the government inexplicably barred several media outlets from a National Security Education Day event on April 15.
"Media outlets being barred from covering public events raises concerns over the future of press freedom in Hong Kong, which is guaranteed under Article 27 of the Basic Law," the club said in a Monday press release ahead of its annual general meeting that evening.
"The FCC also notes that the event in April was held with the aim of enhancing the public's understanding of the importance of national security to Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability. The barring of certain registered media outlets is further perplexing given the stated objectives of the events of that day, as well as the guarantee of freedom of the press under Article 4 of the National Security Law," the statement continued.
In 2018, a representative from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong attempted to block Hong Kong pro-independence activist Andy Chan from speaking at a panel event at the club.
The foreign press club is open to foreign correspondents and locally-based journalists, as well as those who are not employed in the media.
In 2022, Chief Executive John Lee has said press freedom was "In the pocket" of Hongkongers but "Nobody is above the law." Lee, whose administration is mulling a "Fake news" law, has told the press to "Tell a good Hong Kong story."
