2023.05.29 16:11 __Whiskeyjack__ Advise for Home NAS setup needed, feeling very lost :(
Hey everyone, I’m really at my wits end, I’ve tried to research as much as I could but I could really use some help at this point in the process..
Objective:
I’m basically trying to build a NAS to:
- put all my data (currently on a bunch of 2.5” externals), and have it be something me and my family can access over the internet. Primarily movies and tv shows, PLEX / jellyfin server, but also as a network drive for file access for photos and docs
- I would also like to be able to do things like run a torrent client on the NAS remotely, to download files, but also to seed, as i don’t have a desktop
- maybe have it transcode media before serving it if that’s possible? (the movies can be up to 60gig remuxes, and the devices accessing them will be basic laptops and TVs) - low priority
- I’d also probably want to run a virtual machine on it, but i haven’t done any further research on what that would entail.
Tentative build:
- Processor - Intel I5 12400
- Motherboard - ASRock Z690 Steel Legend Motherboard
- Ram - Corsair vengeance lpx OR Patriot Memory Viper Steel; both DDR4 64GB (2 x 32GB) 3200 - 3600MHz
- Cabinet - Silverstone CS380 ATX Mid Tower Case SST-CS380B - this is one of the only ones with 8 HDD bays in the front - hot swappable
- Graphics - currently nothing, just the integrated intel 730, but thinking of the GTX 1050 if you feel it’ll be required
- HDDs: 2-4 to start with, but eventually 8x 20TB WD Ultrastar HDDs
- OS - FreeNas, with a windows VM if feasible
- PSU - HELP - I’ve basically modelled this as a DIY version of the Qnap TVS h874 with a better motherboard and more ram.. the Qnap only uses a 250W power supply but I’m thinking this is nowhere near enough?
Questions / Issues:
- How important is ECC Ram? Not sure how much of it is marketing and how much is legit… I‘ve read that it isn’t supported on intel consumer Level chipsets and processors, but that it is on AMD… is it worth going back to the drawing board to see what i can build with AMD instead just for this support? It will likely be a fair bit more expensive for an equivalent config (~$100 or so) - I live in india so while i have access to parts, prices can vary wildly.
- How do i figure out whether my motherboard can support SAS? I can shortlist by 6Gb/s SATA ports, but nothing specified on SAS.. will i need a separate Pcle card or something? The cabinet supports SAS HDDs, but i can’t figure out how to check if any of the motherboards can.
- Follow up - will SAS be worth it on my setup? What kind of performance increase can i expect? The mobo has 1x 2.5G Ethernet port
- Is one 2.5G ethernet port enough? I know i can add another vie Pcle, but they’re pretty expensive, i think a 10G expansion slot costs as much as my processor :/
- For the love of god, someone help me choose a PSU, I’m lost AF .. is it enough if i just filter by number of SATA drives it can power (8) and leave it at that? What wattage will i need? I’d like to plan ahead and include power for a graphics card (GTX 1050 or similar), but other than that nothing.
- what filesystem do i use? I‘ve read that ZFS is great, but can i use ext4? The only reason I’m considering this is because of what i saw on the Qnap QTS os - the ability to add HDDs to the pool afterwards - I wont be able to afford all 8 drives at once, I’d ideally like to start with 2 and build my way up from there, but with ZFS that isn’t an option unless i create raid1 pools or something.. is ext4 and the addition of drives to the pool even an option with freeNAS?
- How real is the strain or stress involved in re-creating a pool in the event of a single drive failure? A lot of videos on the subject make it sound like the stress involved in recreating the pool can in itself cause another drive to fail … is this actually likely or more like a small possibility? Additionally, will a raid5 on a 8x array put more stress / likelihood of failure than a raid 5 on a 4x array? Basically, does increasing the size of the (single) pool from 4 to 8 make raid5 an unwise choice? I’m maybe considering (very very $$) starting out with 1 pool of 4 in raid5 and then adding another pool of 4 in raid5 in a year or so, making 2x pools of 4x drives in raid5.. $ aside, would this be better, worse, or equivalent to 8 drives in raid6?
- How many additional NVMe / SATA SSDs do i need? I’ve read people talking about not just boot drives, but also cache drives and arch(?).. can someone please recommend how much of each I’ll need, and what this arch? type is? Can i get a larger one and partition it, or do I have to use different physical drives?
- Is Unraid a better choice than freenas?
PLEASE feel free to tweak / modify my proposed build, I’m not really married to any of this and its been more than a decade since i built a PC.. cost is a factor but i also want this to be something i don’t have to touch for at least a few years, so please let me know what you think
Thanks in advance, I’m in your hands!

2023.05.29 16:03 khoafraelich789 2023 Mazda CX-30 Review: Above-and-beyond the mainstream choices
| Mazda's midcompact crossover aims high and hits the mark https://preview.redd.it/qbto2p7rmq1b1.png?width=1062&format=png&auto=webp&s=d4fbc6b2cfab8968ba1c1eb4be4daaf88fa30806 Pros: Fun to drive; wonderful interior; standard all-wheel drive; class-leading turbo power Cons: Average fuel economy from base engine; expensive relative to mainstream competitors; smartphone integration is only so-so Mazda’s ongoing push to be an upscale brand is perhaps best exemplified by one of its least-expensive models. The 2023 CX-30 goes above and beyond the typical mainstream midcompact with a segment-busting turbocharged engine, standard all-wheel drive and an interior that belongs in a class above most of Mazda’s traditional competitors. As impressive as it may be in that context, Mazda’s advantages come at a price — literally. It’s expensive for the segment and a bit shy when it comes to passenger and cargo space; a Kia Seltos or VW Taos would serve you better in that regard. And although it’s based on the traditionally athletic and nimble Mazda3, its AWD and taller profile add mass higher than where you’d ideally want it. Gone are the days of Mazda chasing lap times with its turbocharged Mazdaspeed models, but the CX-30 is nonetheless an excellent driving companion with near-luxury bona fides to boot. What's new for 2023? In short, not much. The standard 2.5-liter engine was massaged slightly, freeing up an additional 5 horsepower and simultaneously improving fuel economy, albeit slightly. Mazda also made some updates to the CX-30’s safety systems and crash structure that should improve performance for rear passengers. The only bad news is that Mazda quietly discontinued the base turbo trim, so you’ll have to spend a bit more to get that extra power for 2023. What are the CX-30 interior and in-car technology like? Like the Mazda3 with which it shares so much, the CX-30's cabin makes you go "wow" considering its price and the vehicles with which it competes. Whatever trim level you're considering, the key to this wow factor is how Mazda's current interior design scheme removes visual clutter by reducing switchgear and effectively hiding air vents and door handles. Lower trim levels are sadly no longer available with two-tone color treatments (we suppose most people just want plain-old black), but upper trims can still get white or black leather accented with reddish brown simulated leather trim. No matter the trim level, though, for a car in the $20,000-$35,000 range, CX-30 interior looks and feels special. It's also of a high quality and quite functional. The steering wheel, which looks sensational, is an absolute treat to hold and has intelligently designed buttons/switches for the infotainment and cruise controls. There's considerable center console space, including a configurable under-armrest bin, and a decently sized forward bin for a smartphone. Mazda's tech interface is a bit love-it-or-hate-it. The dashtop screen is large and easy to see. The knob that controls it is large, not unlike BMW's iDrive, and ergonomically placed on the center console. It's not a touchscreen, though, as Mazda engineers determined that hunting for touch-operating icons can be distracting. They're not wrong, and the higher-mounted screen is certainly easier to read at a glance. That said, there are a lot of people who don't not care for this setup and specifically prefer a touchscreen like the ones offered in all the Mazda's competitors. Specifically, the lack of a touchscreen can make it harder to select icons in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which were designed to be controlled by touch. There's a reason the Mazda CX-50 now allows touch operation when using CarPlay and Android Auto, but that advancement unfortunately hasn't made it to the CX-30 yet. How big is the CX-30? Although it was originally an unusual size, the CX-30 now finds itself among a growing number of midcompact SUVs that slot in between subcompacts like the Hyundai Kona and compacts like Mazda's own CX-5. Others include the Ford Bronco Sport, Kia Seltos, and Volkswagen Taos. In terms of space, the CX-30 is the smallest of that group and is definitely the least family-friendly. Two tall passengers will be able to sit front-to-back on the passenger side, but not on the driver side. Fitting a rear-facing child seat in the middle will be a squeeze. Cargo space with the rear seat raised is 20.2 cubic feet, which is only a bit better than subcompact models and considerably less than the midcompacts mentioned above. That number is virtually identical to the Mazda3 hatchback, but in our testing, we found the CX-30's extra height allowed it to swallow an additional suitcase (surprisingly, the Mazda3 sedan can carry more than them both). Although its suitcase count trailed its midcompact competitors, it was superior to a pair of small luxury models, the BMW X2 and Audi Q3. We could also fit a golf bag diagonally across the cargo area. What are the CX-30 fuel economy and performance specs? For 2023, every CX-30 comes with all-wheel drive, plus a six-speed automatic. There are then two choices of engine. Cars dubbed CX-30 2.5 S have a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four that produces 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. That's more than the base engines of most competitors, plus some of their engine upgrades. It now returns 26 miles per gallon city, 33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined. Those figures remain low compared to other base engines, but again, the competition generally has less power. As for the CX-30's upgrade engine, nothing in the segment can touch it. The turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four produces 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular gas. It'll do 250 hp and 320 lb-ft if you feel like filling it with 93 octane. Fuel economy is basically the same as the base engine at 22/30/25 mpg. What's the CX-30 like to drive? If you want to feel what a car is doing through the steering wheel, throttle pedal and through the seat of your pants, the Mazda CX-30 is exactly the type of small crossover you're looking for. Its taller stature means it loses some of the agility provided by the lower Mazda3, but the primary control efforts and feedback are just as exceptional. When it comes to providing an engaging driving experience, no SUV comes remotely close in the CX-30's price range. There's even a case to be made that it provides more driving fun than a BMW X2. Along those lines, the available turbo engine is there to make the CX-30 feel luxurious and effortless, rather than burn rubber and set lap times like some turbocharged Mazdaspeed of old. On paper and in practice, none of its non-luxury competitors can touch it in a straight line – it obviously costs more, but it's the engine we'd certainly want. Nevertheless, the base engine is still a peach. It's more powerful than most competitors, boasts terrific throttle response and is paired with one of the smartest transmissions around. It always knows exactly which of its six gears to select at any given time, and when Sport mode is selected, it quickly downshifts when braking into a corner like the sport-tuned transmissions of luxury brands do. It also doesn't clumsily hang onto revs when accelerating thereafter. As a bonus, the Premium trim adds paddle shifters then let you have some extra fun if you're so inclined. What other Mazda CX-30 reviews can I read? 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo First Drive A lifted, almost-hot hatch The turbo engine was a new addition last year. It makes an already fun little SUV, even better, though certainly not to hot hatch levels. 2020 Mazda CX-30 Luggage Test Can it fit more than the Mazda3? Taking an in-depth look at the CX-30's cargo capacity to see how much luggage it can fit inside and how that compares to the Mazda3 as well as other small crossovers. We also compared it to both the Mazda3 hatch and sedan with surprising results. 2020 Mazda CX-30 First Drive The middle way Our first taste of the CX-30 features more in-depth information about its design and engineering. What is the 2023 CX-30 price? The base CX-30 2.5 S comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, automatic wipers, adaptive cruise control, a full suite of accident avoidance tech (see Safety section below), cloth upholstery, two USB ports, an eight-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and the Mazda Connect interface that includes an 8.8-inch display and center console controller. From there, you have a choice of three "packages" that are pretty much what other brands refer to as trim levels. We think the Select is best place to start your CX-30 shopping as for an extra $2,300 you gain 18-inch wheels, blind-sport warning, proximity entry, dual-zone climate control, rear air vents, a rear armrest, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and leatherette upholstery versus the standard cloth. The Preferred, new Carbon Edition (pictured below) and Premium packages add further luxuries, most notably a heated power driver seat with memory (Preferred) and leather upholstery (Premium). All new prices are below and include the $1,275 destination charge (add another $45 if you’re shopping in Alaska). S: $24,225 S Select: $26,525 S Preferred: $29,495 S Carbon Edition: $30,565 S Premium: $32,775 Turbo Premium: $35,075 Turbo Premium Plus: $36,675 What are the CX-30 safety ratings and driver assistance features? Every CX-30 comes with a comprehensive array of standard safety features beyond the usual airbags and stability aids. These include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking (Smart Brake Support), lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a driver inattention warning system. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning are included on all but the base trim. Beyond their simple inclusion, these features are also among the best-executed on the market. Most appreciably, they aren't prone to false alarms or constantly beep at you like a scolding nanny. The government awarded the CX-30 a perfect five stars in every crash test even before the updates Mazda made for 2023. The Institute for Highway Safety named the CX-30 a Top Safety Pick. It received the best-possible ratings in all crash tests and for its front-crash prevention system (both for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian accidents). Unusually, its base LED headlights got the best possible rating of "Good," while the curve-adaptive upgrade headlights found on the range-topping Premium (photographed above) actually got a "Poor" rating due to excessive glare. The CX-30 also received top marks for the ease of use of its child seat LATCH anchors. Source: Autoblog submitted by khoafraelich789 to CarInformationNews [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 16:01 Zypker125 Would you actually be interested in dating an idol?
Hello y'all, I'm back with another poll!
One of the most infamous preconceptions non-K-Pop fans tend to have about K-Pop fans is that they perceive K-Pop fans to be indulgent in the "boyfriend/girlfriend fantasy". Now, for many of us that are in the K-Pop community, we know that that preconceived notion can be a stereotype/overgeneralization.
However, because of the general taboo and negative stigmatization around this topic (especially in Reddit communities), it's difficult to truly ascertain what percentage of K-Pop fans (especially those in these international social media communities) would actually be interested in dating an idol
if the opportunity presented itself. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to run a poll so that we could see once-and-for-all what proportion of Redditors would actually want to date an idol!
Since the obvious answer to the poll would be "It's logistically impossible for me to date an idol because of language/country/communication/long-distance barriers", I decided to specify in the poll that "
If all the language/country/communication/long-distance barriers were removed, would you want to date an idol?"
I hope you have fun filling out the poll! You can view the results after you fill out the poll, and you can edit your response at any time. I'll likely publish the results ~3 days afterwards. Feel free to discuss your thoughts on the question/topic in the comments section as well!

2023.05.29 15:54 RBrim08 Update to my first major attempt to completed a Nuzlocke of FireRed.
Here is the previous update I posted, for those that didn't see it or wanted more context to go along with this post. After obtaining Zheos the Growlithe and leveling him up to a comparable level to the rest of my team, I headed west and took the underground path to get to Celadon City. The Rocket Hideout was uneventful and the battle of Giovanni was handled very well thanks to Hans, my Machoke.
I then went further west to hit up the grass on route 16 and, thank to duplicates clause, my only viable capture (aside from the snoozing Snorlax) was a female Doduo, which I captured and named Cerberus, who takes Ophelia the Butterfree's place on my team. I then took a short break to train up my team to level 30 and 31 in preparation for Erika. I had a huge surplus of money which I used to purchase coins to buy the Flamethrower TM, which I taught to Zheos the Growlithe and evolved him into an Arcanine. Cerberus the Doduo also evolved into a Dodrio at this time. Naturally, the two of them helped me sweep the entirety of Erika's gym, earning me the Rainbow Badge.
With the Silph Scope in hand and a decently leveled team, I made my way back to Lavender Town to tackle the Pokemon Tower and easily handled my Rival's team without any major damage sustained. Within the tower, my first encounter was a male Ghastly, which I captured and named Myon, after the admin on the Etrian Odyssey discord server I'm a part of. Myon takes the place of Skarner, my Beedrill, on my team for the time being.
After completing the Tower and getting the Pokeflute, I made my way down to Route 12 to face the Snorlax blocking the road (since the other Snorlax is on Route 16 and I couldn't capture that one). Attempting to capture this one proved very difficult, as it would rest spam when I brought it low. Eventually, I managed to bring its health down low enough when it was out of Rest PP and put it to sleep... but then it began to struggle when it ran out of
ALL PP. Thankfully, my last Great Ball while it was asleep and in the red managed to capture it. I named him Hortence, but choose not to use him unless absolutely necessary due to Snorlax's innate tankiness.
Now having access to Route 12, I make my way to the Fisher's house to pick up the Super Rod, before making my way back to Vermillion City. Since I never encountered a wild Pokemon within the city itself, I attempt to fish up a 'mon and find a Horsea... which I underestimated the frailty of and one-shot with a non-crit move. I move up to Route 6, which I was unable to catch anything due to the duplicates clause and fish up a Gyarados, which I already had.
Routes 17 and 18 also have no Pokemon for me to capture, due to the duplicates clause, so after making my way down Cycling Road, I reach Fuschia City. I head East to Route 15 and, thanks to duplicates clause, my only viable captures on this route are either Venonat or a Ditto. The former is the first one to pop up, which I capture and name Madame. Within the Safari zone, I attempt to make my way deep enough in for the hope of capturing a Rhyhorn, but sadly come across a Nidoran♀ before that... which instantly flees.
Being rather underleveled for Koga's gym due to the large level gap between Erika's ace and Koga's, I take the time to level up my team to his level. Without any way to exploit Koga's weaknesses with my current team, I decide to swap Myon for Ophelia, the only Pokemon in my box that knows any psychic moves. I level my entire team up to level 43, the level of Koga's Koffin, which allows Hans the Machoke to evolve into Machamp at level 37, thanks to the Ultimate Randomizer making such evolutions possible.
Koga's gym is mostly uneventful, though I forgot how few of his trainers actually USE Poison-types--I fought more Drowzees and Hypnos than anything--before facing the gym leader himself. Koga's Pokemon are swept most handily with Ophelia's Psybeam... before a hard-hitting Sludge from his level 43 Weezing takes Ophelia down from more than half of her health. Thankfully, she had weakened the thing enough for Zheos to come in and finish the job with a Flamethrower, securing me the Soul Badge.
With Ophelia gone, I bring Myon back into the team and take some time to train him up to level 43 with the rest of my team. He evolves into Gengar at level 37 and, now sufficiently prepared, I head into Saffron City to challenge the Team Rocket-controlled Silph Co. building. None of the Rocket members or Silph Co. employees prove to be too challenging and even my Rival battle and Giovanni prove to be uneventful battles, which I easily handle thanks to my team being strong.
Sabrina's gym proves to be not much of a challenge, either, using Madonna the Gyarados to easily handle all of the trainers and all of Sabrina's team with Rain Dance + Surf and the occasional Bite... until her Alakazam comes out. It keeps itself healthy by spamming Calm Mind and Recover, and when she finally attacks with Psychic, I see that Madonna takes 5/8ths of her health in one attack... unfortunately, Madonna is the one Pokemon on my team with the highest Special Defense, so I have no choice but to keep trying to take out the Alakazam with Surf.
Unfortunately, a combination of another Calm Mind + Future Sight and Psychic ends up taking out Madonna, my most powerful Pokemon. Thankfully, her death wasn't in vain, as she had weakened Sabrina's Alakazam enough where I could send in Myon and, despite the risk of her exploiting his weakness, finish it off with a Shadow Punch. The loss of Madonna is painful, but I will persevere, as I set my eyes across the ocean, to the Seafoam Caves and Cinnabar Island, where my next Pokemon and gym battles await.

2023.05.29 15:51 PapaSmurf22_ LH .308 Superlight or 6.5PRC Roughtech
Pretty much title. Getting my first bolt gun, ultimate goal will be to free up schedule to do some hunting with my Pops. Mainly Mulies but possibly Elk down the road. Some target shooting, nothing like PRS though.
Born with the lefty curse and, to a fault, partial to the “latest and greatest.” I have a LH 6.5prc Roughtech on backorder for 3 months now, but really looking into the Superlight’s as I can easily get them from a Cabela’s/Sportsman’s.

2023.05.29 15:45 QuantumRaygun UI Design on MacBook
This is a rant.
Tl;dr AppleTV UI sucks. Other complaints.
Who is in charge of UI design for AppleTV? Have they ever even used a streaming service before?
If I don’t know the exact name of the show I want there is a bat’s chance in hell I will ever find it. And then, even when I finally find a show I like, at the end of it they suggest like 14 different options and the default is NOT THE SHOW I WAS WATCHING!!!! Does no one ever binge shows in the AppleVerse?
The tabs titles are confusing. The random pricing shit that pops up is confusing.
The ads are omnipresent and ridiculous and just not even tailored to my tastes. It’s a “throw crap at the wall and see what sticks” approach.
And the selection is SO eclectic. Get some staple shows. Get some free with your subscription stuff that’s worth it.
I really want to love AppleTV. I’m mostly apple in my home tech. But the AppleTV stuff just sucks so much.
The AppleTV UI sucks and that is one of the things that is holding back adoption as a major streaming service. The content is decent. But the UI is just awful.
