Esen: When we landed at the primary research site, it was quiet at last. As I unstrapped myself and began to stand up, I started forming a list in my mind of all the tasks that would need to be completed.
As a first order of business, I walked over to the other side of the flight deck and began to inspect the hull breach. The hole that had been formed in the side of our ship was smooth on the inside. There was no evidence of any tearing or fragmenting, rather, the metal appeared to have been melted.
“You know,” I said, “I don’t think this was from kinetics fire. It looks like a laser did this.”
“It was a laser,” Tsavolyn replied. “I could see the beam.”
“I mean, it makes sense ‘cause we were moving away from them so quickly.”
At this, commander Taylor spoke up:
“That reminds me, did I hear you correctly when you said that those attackers were pulling twelve G’s?”
“Yeah,” I answered.
“They… that’s not… they can’t do that, that should be lethal!”
“I know,” I said. “Maybe those two ships never had a crew to begin with, however, they weren’t acting like they were computer controlled either. Honestly, I’m even more impressed they didn’t damage their warp drives or stall their reactors pulling those kinds of maneuvers.”
“Unfortunately, we’ll have to worry about that later,” commander Taylor responded, “right now, we need to get our own drive back in order.”
The three of us began to make our way down to the cargo hold. Once there, I found the nearest control panel and instructed the cargo bay doors to open. Sunlight flooded into the compartment.
The first thing that jumped out at me was that, unlike Earth’s spaceports, our landing pad seemed to be entirely makeshift. The bay doors led directly out onto a platform surrounded by guard rails and supported by a steel lattice structure. From there, a set of stairs connected the platform to the concrete floor below. Besides the platform in front of us, there was a concerning lack of service structures.
Then, I saw the rest of the world beyond the guard railing. The human-built structures gave way to rolling grassy hills with forests and mountains visible in the distance. From our vantage point, an abandoned alien city could be seen as well. The city was the reason for the outpost’s construction and was also the only obvious indicator that this was not Earth.
“It may not be quite what you’re used to,” commander Taylor said, “but according to the outpost’s inventory, everything you need should be here.”
I went over my mental checklist again before speaking:
“Alright. So… I need to swap out proto-segments three, seven, nine, fourteen, and… eighteen. We should probably start with three since that one’s kinda the whole reason we landed at all.”
“What is special about segment three?” Tsavolyn asked.
“Proto-segment three is
all the way inside of the warp drive’s primary ring,” I answered. “We experimented with other designs that were easier to service, but none could match the efficiency of our current approach. So unfortunately, in order to get to segments one through four, you have to partition them and extract the surrounding buffer. It takes special machines to do this because the drive becomes inoperable if the buffer leaks out.”
“Plus,” I added, “that stuff is toxic and it aerosolizes at standard pressure.”
“We didn’t pack our own equipment because it’s very heavy and we wanted to stay maneuverable in order to give ourselves the best chance of survival,” Taylor said plainly.
The three of us climbed down to the ground and began our preparations.
“I’m going to need some way to get up top to the primary ring,” I remarked.
“There should be an articulated lift here somewhere,” commander Taylor responded. “I can get that set up while you go find any other tools you might need.”
“Alright,” I said. The three of us parted, Tsavolyn traveling with Taylor while I headed in the opposite direction towards the edge of the spaceport. The researchers had set up a collection of temporary shelters and storage units. These structures were built out of flexible plastic supported by metal framework, they were more like habitats than buildings.
Once inside one of the shelters, it was obvious that the outpost was abandoned in a hurry. A variety of tools and electronics lay strewn about on top of a foldable table along with a half eaten bowl of oatmeal and a tablet.
Out of curiosity, I picked up the tablet and powered it on. When the screen lit up a dim orange color and displayed alien text, I realized that the device was of tynaksian design; evidence of the expedition’s cooperative nature.
After turning the tablet off, I set it back where I found it and then got to work. I managed to find a small tool bag and began packing it with everything I would need. I took a set of wrenches, a small flashlight, and a multitude of powered screwdrivers. I also packed a set of pliers along with extra bolts and wires in case any got lost or damaged. As I was searching through various storage drawers, I caught a glint of something gold and shiny. I reached in and produced a roll of PI tape. Remembering the hull breach on the flight deck, I packed the tape as well.
The next couple hours were spent tediously replacing each of the modified warp drive components. Accessing proto-segment three was a delicate process that involved attaching several cables and hoses to the drive’s primary ring, engaging multiple safety mechanisms, and then having commander Taylor activate the extraction machine from the ground.
After segment three, the rest were fairly straight forward. I would simply unbolt a panel somewhere, replace the proto-segment, and then put the panel back. When that was done, I went back inside the ship and used the PI tape to patch up the hole in the side of the flight deck. I also realized, upon further inspection, that the laser beam responsible for the hull breach had continued on its path and damaged one of the control interfaces.
To prevent any complications, I disconnected the damaged interface and then began a diagnostic on each of the components that had been replaced. After that, I headed back outside, finding commander Taylor and Tsavolyn admiring the alien landscape.
“I’m running a diagnostic on each segment,” I told them. “Once that’s done, we should be good to go!”
“Alright,” Taylor responded, “let me know when—”
As he spoke, the commander turned around to face me before stopping mid sentence.
After a moment of silence, I realized that Taylor was staring at something behind me. Cautiously, I turned around and followed his gaze.
An alien stared back at me. Their skin looked like it was composed of very small scales, so they definitely weren’t tynaksian. Looking directly at them, their scales were a crisp white color, however, when the sunlight hit them at an angle, they took on a faint violet hue. The alien wore a strange cyan-colored uniform inscribed with markings that were barely visible, and they seemed to be carrying a small crate full of electronics.
Since they weren’t tynaksian, that currently only left one option:
This was a raknin, probably one from the enemy fleet.
As soon as I had that realization, the alien dropped the crate they were holding and bolted in the opposite direction.
“Hey, wait!” commander Taylor shouted before taking off after them.
The raknin had already reached the other end of the launch pad by the time I recovered from my initial shock. I too began to chase after the commander and our alien visitor with Tsavolyn following close behind.
The concrete floor ended and our chase continued through the tall, lush grass. The ground grew steeper and before I knew it, the raknin and commander Taylor had both disappeared over the top of a hill.
Reaching the top of the hill myself revealed both a large valley as well as the alien’s intended destination. A raknin spacecraft sat tucked away at the bottom of the valley, concealed previously by the surrounding hills.
Taylor was gaining on the fleeing alien, and as they neared the bottom of the hill, the commander leapt forward. He collided with the raknin and the two of them tumbled the rest of the way down.
The alien quickly recovered and continued running. Commander Taylor took longer to get his bearings allowing me and Tsavolyn to catch up with him.
From there, it was a dead sprint to the spaceship.
When they reached the base of the rocket, the raknin scaled a ladder leading up to the cargo hold.
We weren’t far behind.
When I made my way to the top, officially boarding the alien craft, I was greeted with the sight of commander Taylor tackling the alien to the ground.
The alien tried to escape but couldn’t. As they struggled, the commander managed to look at me and shout:
“Tape! Tape! Give me the Tape!”
Tape? And then I remembered: I still had the polyimide tape!
I opened the tool bag and retrieved the roll of tape I had used to repair the hull breach. I tossed the roll to Taylor and then helped hold the raknin down while he restrained them.
Once the alien was immobile, I stood up and took a step backwards. As I did so, my hand collided with a hard surface and I cried out in pain.
I turned around to see what I had hit, but there was only empty space in front of me. Confused, I looked down at the back of my hand.
There were burn marks. Tsavolyn:
While Esen and Taylor were handling the fleeing raknin, I had the wherewithal to check if there were any other crewmates aboard the rocket.
I had been on a couple of raknin spacecraft before, but this one was different. It was like the whole interior had been emptied out and replaced with a strange metal lattice. This lattice was densely packed with hundreds of some kind of tetrahedron-shaped device. These devices covered every wall and ceiling. Even the floors were nothing more than a thin metal grating with more of the strange instrument underneath.
It looked like this vessel had been turned into some kind of detector array. I wasn’t sure what kind of array this was or why this had been done, but I figured the flight deck might hold some answers.
Besides us, the ship turned out to be empty; the raknin we encountered had flown here alone. When I reached the bridge, the first thing I noticed was a message displayed on several of the control interfaces warning of damage to the electrical systems.
I picked one of the control interfaces and sat down. As I was in the process of opening the diagnostics menu, Esen came in.
“Hey, do you think you can communicate with our new friend?”
“Probably,” I answered, “but I can’t guarantee that she’ll cooperate”
“I’m hoping they’re at least willing to tell us what they have down in the cargo hold,” He said.
“If you’re referring to all the devices on the walls, I can probably figure that out from here. I have some experience with these ships from before our falling out with the raknins. If I open the diagnostics interface, it will list every subsystem on the ship’s network.”
“Yeah, finding out what those are would also be helpful,” Esen said.
“Also? I thought the hold was otherwise empty.”
“Oh no,” Esen replied, “there’s definitely something in the middle of the cargo hold. We’re not sure what it is because it’s invisible.”
“Invisible?”
“Yeah,” he answered. “It’s surrounded by some kind of cloaking field. Also, the field isn’t safe to touch.”
Esen held up his hand revealing burn marks on both sides.
“Okay, that’s strange. Wait, you touched it twice?” I asked.
“Science has to be repeatable,” he said with a chuckle.
“Okay, I have the diagnostics menu up. It looks like they have… actually I’m not sure how to say this in English. It’s a type of particle, low mass, no charge, emitted during nuclear processes…”
“It’s not in the nucleus of atoms, right?” Esen asked.
“That’s right,” I answered.
“You’re probably thinking of neutrinos then.”
“That sounds correct,” I responded. “In that case, this ship has an array of neutrino detectors.”
“That’s probably what the things on the wall are for then,” Esen said.
“That would be my guess as well. Okay, this I don’t recognize.”
“What is it,” he asked.
“It’s a system listed as ‘frame capture,’ and I have no idea what that means.” I said.
“Could that have to do with our strange object?”
“Maybe?” I answered. “I’m not sure though because this is listed along with the warp drive and the drive complement.”
After a moment of contemplation, I selected ‘frame capture’ and ran a basic, full subsystem diagnostic.
After a few moments, I heard the ship’s reactor change output modes followed by the unmistakable rumble of the warp drive activating. This was confirmation that whatever the frame capture system was, it had something to do with the FTL drive, however that still left a lot of questions unanswered. I had never encountered it before, so it was either new technology or something that had been kept secret.
The diagnostic continued without issue until suddenly, a warning flashed on the screen. I didn’t have time to read it before the control interface went dead. The warp drive powered down along with the reactor leaving us in total silence.
“Hey!” commander Taylor shouted from below, “You two should get down here!”
Esen and I made our way down to the cargo hold. The spaces between the flight deck and the hold were dark now as, apparently, the entire spacecraft had lost power. Fortunately, the cargo bay doors were still open and thus the deck was illuminated with sunlight.
When we reached the hold, we both stopped in our tracks. Something was definitely different.
“Whatever you did caused it to become visible,” commander Taylor said.
He was right. In the center of the room sat a strange metallic object. It had a thick outline in the shape of a dodecahedron, however, the space in the middle was filled with a forest of thin metal strands. It was spiky, messy, and in some way, almost organic.
“Can you ask the raknin what this is?” Taylor asked.
I glanced over at the pilot thoroughly restrained with the shiny, high performance tape. She was staring at the now-visible object, and the fear in her eyes was contagious.
I looked at her and saw myself as a kid lost in the woods.
“Hey, are you alright?” the commander asked.
“Sorry, I’m fine,” I said. “I think the silence is getting to me again.”

2023.05.29 16:28 uslvdslv Recession Update: 6 Weeks to go Before Entering the Critical +/-1 Sigma Birthing Zone for Economic Contractions (The Cradle of Recessions)
| At this point in time, there is an 84% chance the next recession will begin within the +/-1 Sigma zone, with the most-likely start date being centered around early December 2023 (+/- 4.61 months). Looking at the bottom graphic, our current position on the probability distribution is shown by the solid red arrow that is pointing upwards. From that point forward (sliding right as time passes) there is approximately six more weeks before we enter the left side of the +/-1 sigma area underneath the curve. The +/-1 sigma area under the curve is a very significant zone where seven of the last eight recessions began. Typically, the stock market will begin a long-term downward trend as we enter this critical zone. Top Graphic Explanation: Over the past +50 years, inversions of the 50 day SMA of the 10 year treasury rates minus the 50 day SMA of the 3 month treasury rates have all preceded the start of a U.S. recession (there have been no false indicators or exceptions to this rule). The 8 recessions that occurred over the last half a century have started within an average of 12.18 months from the first day that their 50 day SMA inversions began). Bottom Graphic Explanation: Recession probability distribution showing the positions of the last 8 recessions (over a +50 yr. period) superimposed on the curve with each recession's position based on the time from the first day of their respective (10 Yr. minus 3 Mo.) 50 day SMA inversions to the first day of the start of their corresponding recessions. Normal distribution used as best fit with a mean of 12.18 months and a standard deviation of 4.61 months. Our current position on the probability curve is denoted by the solid red vertical arrow (the red arrow pointing upwards), which started from time zero (1st day of the latest 50 day SMA inversion) and which is sliding rightwards as time proceeds. Prediction of a 57% probability that a recession will start on or before late December 2023 and a greater than 95% probability that a recession will start on or before late July 2024. 2023.05.29 16:25 Obility Condom broke during sex but I didn't finish. How screwed am I still?
So long story short. Last night me and my girl friend had sex for quite a while and the condom broke possibly mid way. I didn't finish inside of her but I feel like we were still having sex for quite sometime unprotected. It's been about 8 hours but I bought plan b for her but she said this is one of the worst days for this to happen for her. Didn't ask the details but I'm assuming she's ovulationg or something like that. How screwed are my chances? I'm pretty much giving myself a reason to worry but it's still worrying. I know she would have an abortion but I'm my heart I'm pro life but also pro choice. She also has PCOS so I'm not sure how that changes things.

2023.05.29 16:21 Vethalos How do you keep working when you're tired and your head went blank?
I'm currently a graphic design student who also has been working freelance on the side, I decided to switch to graphic design as a career change in my mid 20s and I realise that I'm too old. I'm taking a short, 1 years course to understand the design fundamentals. I understand that the quality of education won't be equal to 4 year courses in term of project and ideation, so I have to self study a lot, there's also a pressure of realising that I'm very old and very late in life, therefore I need to work hard to catch up.
I'm currently spending 8-10 hours a day trying to work on my assignments, working on freelance works and reading design/typography related books, and oftentimes I'm getting frustrated that my work are not currently very high quality yet, because I know, at this age, I should have done better.
However, at the end of the days, I usually find myself wanting to take a break, go to bed or go do something else, because I cannot think of new work ideas anymore. And it's frustrating because i feel like I'm too old and therefore I am wasting time. I have motivations and willpower, but my brain is not clear and if I continue working I'd be staring at my screen moving things around instead of being productive.
How can I work more without taking a break?
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak

2023.05.29 16:21 External_Shoulder541 90 days reflect
This is not my first streak, as I've been practicing SR on and off since late 2019. I’ve had two longer streaks in the past, and they both ended in me entering a relationship. In both cases, the girl pursued me, and I just went with it. The initial stages of the relationship were great, but over time I would always return to baseline and crave that sense of solitude again. In my most recent relationship, I was with this girl for about 7-8 months. During the relationship, I was open about not wanting to have sex too often, and she obliged. But the nature of being in a relationship dictates that you won’t be able to go long without any sexual contact, and I could clearly feel the difference in myself when I retained vs. released.
So, in mid-February, I decided to call it and told her I no longer wished to be in a relationship. I was frank with her about not wanting to compromise on my time since I felt I still had lots of growing to do on my own. With that, I began my current streak on 2/25/23. The past 90-something days have been absolutely transformational. Now, this is not my first time - which means I haven’t watched P or anything related to that sort of content for a good 2-3 years now. I also don’t have any social media. So I guess I was able to “get to work” at a relatively quicker pace than a first-timer.
I won’t go into all the energy, discipline, and female attraction benefits. They are all there, but I no longer pay much attention to them. What I want to share is how this streak has transformed how I view life. Especially how my affinity for the esoteric has grown tremendously and how applying these principles has helped me develop a deeper sense of connectedness with myself and the greater universe.
I believe life to be a game, as many of us do, I’m sure. If that is true, then a set of rules must govern this game. Through my research, I’ve come to realize that, for me, these rules are the natural laws. (The Hermetic Principles) Having learned these rules and now using them as a framework, I can clearly see and feel that we are the creator of our experience. - “The mind is all; the universe is mental.” It is truly not what happens to you but how you respond that matters.
This concept has been mentioned time and again in countless books like “Principles” by Ray Dalio and “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. The one principle tool that connects what you desire to what you experience is ACTION. That’s it. It’s so so simple.
Action is the only thing that will change our reality. To perform the action, we must have FAITH to keep us going. There is a saying, “A reasonable man has never achieved anything.” So don’t be “reasonable.” Dare to dream, but put in the work to deserve your dream.
- Identify your goal.
- Think backward (For me to achieve my goal, what do I need to do)
- Break each step into smaller steps, small enough that you will take action.
- Transmute your sexual energy to perform said actions.
- When faced with roadblocks, understand that this is PART of the PROCESS. You declared your intention to become great so the universe will challenge you. One of my favorite saying by Charlier Munger is, “Deserve what you desire.”
- Understand this, the universe itself wants to evolve. It will naturally assist entities contributing to this evolution—greater the goal, “harder” the process. Because you are not given anything, you must earn everything.
- If you want something, make sure you deserve that thing by putting in the work. To do the work, transmute your energy.
The elusive “they” do not have some magical ways to impede our progress, but they do have tools designed to stop us from performing effective actions. Taking away time means fewer resources for effective action. Less action means less change. = status quo. No need to be angry about “they. Remember, this is all a game anyways. Ultimately, you cannot blame someone else for your inability to take action.
Finally, at this 90-day mark, I feel like I’m only getting started. I only got a tiny glimpse behind the curtain. I’ve promised myself that I will no longer release unless for reproduction. Let’s see where this takes me.

2023.05.29 16:11 __Whiskeyjack__ Advise for Home NAS setup needed, feeling very lost :(
Hey everyone, I’m really at my wits end, I’ve tried to research as much as I could but I could really use some help at this point in the process..
Objective:
I’m basically trying to build a NAS to:
- put all my data (currently on a bunch of 2.5” externals), and have it be something me and my family can access over the internet. Primarily movies and tv shows, PLEX / jellyfin server, but also as a network drive for file access for photos and docs
- I would also like to be able to do things like run a torrent client on the NAS remotely, to download files, but also to seed, as i don’t have a desktop
- maybe have it transcode media before serving it if that’s possible? (the movies can be up to 60gig remuxes, and the devices accessing them will be basic laptops and TVs) - low priority
- I’d also probably want to run a virtual machine on it, but i haven’t done any further research on what that would entail.
Tentative build:
- Processor - Intel I5 12400
- Motherboard - ASRock Z690 Steel Legend Motherboard
- Ram - Corsair vengeance lpx OR Patriot Memory Viper Steel; both DDR4 64GB (2 x 32GB) 3200 - 3600MHz
- Cabinet - Silverstone CS380 ATX Mid Tower Case SST-CS380B - this is one of the only ones with 8 HDD bays in the front - hot swappable
- Graphics - currently nothing, just the integrated intel 730, but thinking of the GTX 1050 if you feel it’ll be required
- HDDs: 2-4 to start with, but eventually 8x 20TB WD Ultrastar HDDs
- OS - FreeNas, with a windows VM if feasible
- PSU - HELP - I’ve basically modelled this as a DIY version of the Qnap TVS h874 with a better motherboard and more ram.. the Qnap only uses a 250W power supply but I’m thinking this is nowhere near enough?
Questions / Issues:
- How important is ECC Ram? Not sure how much of it is marketing and how much is legit… I‘ve read that it isn’t supported on intel consumer Level chipsets and processors, but that it is on AMD… is it worth going back to the drawing board to see what i can build with AMD instead just for this support? It will likely be a fair bit more expensive for an equivalent config (~$100 or so) - I live in india so while i have access to parts, prices can vary wildly.
- How do i figure out whether my motherboard can support SAS? I can shortlist by 6Gb/s SATA ports, but nothing specified on SAS.. will i need a separate Pcle card or something? The cabinet supports SAS HDDs, but i can’t figure out how to check if any of the motherboards can.
- Follow up - will SAS be worth it on my setup? What kind of performance increase can i expect? The mobo has 1x 2.5G Ethernet port
- Is one 2.5G ethernet port enough? I know i can add another vie Pcle, but they’re pretty expensive, i think a 10G expansion slot costs as much as my processor :/
- For the love of god, someone help me choose a PSU, I’m lost AF .. is it enough if i just filter by number of SATA drives it can power (8) and leave it at that? What wattage will i need? I’d like to plan ahead and include power for a graphics card (GTX 1050 or similar), but other than that nothing.
- what filesystem do i use? I‘ve read that ZFS is great, but can i use ext4? The only reason I’m considering this is because of what i saw on the Qnap QTS os - the ability to add HDDs to the pool afterwards - I wont be able to afford all 8 drives at once, I’d ideally like to start with 2 and build my way up from there, but with ZFS that isn’t an option unless i create raid1 pools or something.. is ext4 and the addition of drives to the pool even an option with freeNAS?
- How real is the strain or stress involved in re-creating a pool in the event of a single drive failure? A lot of videos on the subject make it sound like the stress involved in recreating the pool can in itself cause another drive to fail … is this actually likely or more like a small possibility? Additionally, will a raid5 on a 8x array put more stress / likelihood of failure than a raid 5 on a 4x array? Basically, does increasing the size of the (single) pool from 4 to 8 make raid5 an unwise choice? I’m maybe considering (very very $$) starting out with 1 pool of 4 in raid5 and then adding another pool of 4 in raid5 in a year or so, making 2x pools of 4x drives in raid5.. $ aside, would this be better, worse, or equivalent to 8 drives in raid6?
- How many additional NVMe / SATA SSDs do i need? I’ve read people talking about not just boot drives, but also cache drives and arch(?).. can someone please recommend how much of each I’ll need, and what this arch? type is? Can i get a larger one and partition it, or do I have to use different physical drives?
- Is Unraid a better choice than freenas?
PLEASE feel free to tweak / modify my proposed build, I’m not really married to any of this and its been more than a decade since i built a PC.. cost is a factor but i also want this to be something i don’t have to touch for at least a few years, so please let me know what you think
Thanks in advance, I’m in your hands!

2023.05.29 16:09 oceanview1975 [QCrit] Mystery Suspense - THE SHRINE MAIDEN [85k, sixth attempt]
Hello again! This is the third evolution of my query, following an extensive novel rewrite and a little more research into what makes a story a story, as opposed to a bunch of stuff that happens (Save the Cat Writes a Novel, and Story Genius are the two main books I’ve consulted.) I hope the stakes and motivations are more specific and compelling now (?) Any feedback would be highly appreciated, as always! (Without this community, I would have already queried a novel that didn’t work, and probably would have flamed out already.)
-------------------
THE SHRINE MAIDEN is a mystery suspense novel complete at 85,000 words. Like Sarah Pearse’s The Sanatorium, it features a traumatized protagonist trapped in an isolated facility with its own dark past, and the secrets and resentments between the characters echo the murderous friction of Lucy Foley’s The Guest List.
Eloise never expected to end up 6,000 miles from home, teaching English in Japan. But after being wrongfully implicated in a violent crime, all she wants is to start over, get past her feelings of misplaced guilt, and learn to trust people again. The problem is, she’s developed crippling social anxiety, and the only crutch available to her—besides alcohol—is an anonymous online support group.
When she’s invited on a trip to tropical Okinawa, it’s the support group that urges her to face her fears and go. So she joins rising YouTuber Tate and his group of six to shoot an extreme tourism video in the ruins of an abandoned resort. The old Oceanview, located on a remote uninhabited island, has been decaying since the mid Eighties. And an online tip from one of Tate’s fans claims it’s cursed—by the spirit of a shrine maiden who purges impure souls.
But the resort turns out to be a trap. Someone cuts their boat loose, stranding them. They catch glimpses of an eerie figure on the cliffs, in shrine maiden garb. Then members of the group start turning up dead, messages scrawled on the bodies in red spray paint: 1/8 INGRATE. 2/8 ADULTERER. 3/8 PREDATOR...
As the numbers, and the bodies, keep coming, Eloise realizes two things. One, she was right—she can’t trust anyone. And two, this has to be connected. The murders, the shrine maiden, the resort, its abandonment. And the incident in her own past that drew her here. But if she can’t put the pieces together in time, she’ll end up as dead as the others. And her guilty heart knows, too well, what the writing on her body will say.
I’m a freelance translator from (x). The novel was inspired by my appreciation for the works of Agatha Christie and the Japanese “Honkaku” mystery novel genre. It draws on my experience working in Japan straight out of college, and the resort in the novel is inspired by a real place, the abandoned Nakagusuku Hotel in Okinawa.

| I’m looking to purchase a new dining table and am looking for opinions. Both on the look and overall quality and durability. I have narrowed down my selection to the Ovilla and Alfie tables by Four Hands. Ovilla is birch, Alfie is pine. I’m looking for more of a French countryside sort of look, but something that won’t clash with mid century items in other parts of my home. submitted by nj5009 to HomeDecorating [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 15:44 OmniscientwithDowns There have been 8 Waystar CEO changes in 2 and a half years
For anyone thinking Shivs decision was smart at all I just want to remind you (including Interims) there have been 8 ceo shift in 2 and a half years that is this series
Logan
Ken (interim)
Logan
Rhea
Logan
Gerri
Logan
Ken/Roman (interim)
The CEO position is not a permanent position and there's tons of reasons why someone will leave or be removed from that seat
Willingly selling off your company just to be close to the current ceo is an asinine decision.
Even if she hated giving her Brother the 'win' there's a high likelyhood they can have him removed later and she could be in the running to replace him
They are mid 30's/early 40s they have another 35-45 years of owning this company and a lot of play left to be had if they kept the company
It was a very stupid emotional knee jerk decision

2023.05.29 15:41 SomeMarbles Insomnia due to 450->300 XL reduction???
Two months ago, I decreased my dose of Bupropion XL to 300 from 450 (went 300 -> 450 about 5 years ago).
The first couple weeks I was sleeping longer and felt more refreshed. That tapered off back to my normal sleep pattern (which is usually not getting enough, but that's on me).
Last week, I started waking up anywhere between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours early. This has been going on every day since. Some days I have no issues with less sleep. Others, I can barely stay awake in the mid-afternoon.
Has anyone else seen this with a dose reduction?
The almost two-month gap has me thinking it is something else, but at the moment I can't think what.
I've always had an issue for as long as I can remember of not being able to fall asleep if I wake up after 4:30 am. Well, almost always. That had not been happening as much until this last week... and I *am* waking up after 4:30.
When I originally started about 8 years ago, it took about a month before I started to lose a lot of weight (not why I started with it). So, a delayed reaction wouldn't completely surprise me.

2023.05.29 15:40 saucity I just wanna sit outside with my Guinea pigs, reading and listening to music…
My piggies are very old. Their life span is like 5ish years, and my girls are 8.
Lately, I’ve been keeping them around me constantly, in a cute little portable home, and giving them lots of outside play time in their little outdoor pen.
Pig Tax 🥰!! The only part of my yard on a sunny day with shade is right out front, under my tree, highly visible to everyone. They need shade 💕 🌱 I’m in a very small town, and all my neighbors are acquaintances I’ve known for years, and in general it’s very acceptable to talk to strangers here.
When people see cutie pigs in their pen, they want to say hi. People walking, neighbors passing, little kids, etc -
and I do not mind one bit. I’m usually laying down, reading on a blanket, with headphones in. Not someone
I’d personally approach (general rule is “headphones = don’t talk to me” lol) but the curiosity of cute little piggies outweighs that, and again, I’m an introvert, but I have good social/conversation skills, and am happy to share my sweetie girls.
95% of the time, I truly do not mind chatting, and letting people pet or cuddle the piggies. They love the attention, and they cheer people up. Therapy pigs!
The people that come to chat are great at picking up social cues - a polite 5–10 minute convo, then they excuse themselves. “Thanks, I’ll let you get back to it!”
…Except my one neighbor. For too many reasons to type here, I’ve know him for 14 years now, and I
despise him.
Racist, beyond obnoxious, textbook narcissist, a real manipulative creep, one of these “Q” people, neglects his dogs (lets them howl all day, and/or escape and eat my trash) and kids (I can’t count how many times over the years his kids have come over, terrified, asking to use my phone to find him; or asking me to watch them for “30 minutes” which turns into like 5 hours, no exaggeration.)
I KNOW (but can’t prove) that he’s broken into my house and stolen my cannabis oil, has begged me for some of my pills when I was too injured after surgery to drive and had his wife get them for me (I’m disabled, so…. HELL no? You’re pathetic?) and when I told him I’d quit drinking and had a problem years ago, back when we were on speaking terms, he’d stop by with whisky. “Come on. Just
smell it.” Malicious bastard.
Picture the Big Lebowski, but evil, cosplaying as Crocodile Dundee - shirtless with a tiny leather vest, creepy waxed mustache, Australian-style cowboy hat, flimsy boxers ( 🤢) cowboy boots, just drunkenly sauntering around the neighborhood at 10am with a 711 big gulp of shitty wine.
He sits out front (maybe 30ft away from me) and just stares. All the time. (Creep, like I said. I’m not saying I’m ‘all that’; I think any woman would do 👀 ). I’m at the point where if I’m out there (without pigs) and he starts yammering at me, I will turn around mid-sentence and go inside, or get in my car and leave.
I’m a big, non-confrontational weenie (he knows this), so this is stressfully exhilarating for me, and wayyyyy outside what I’d normally do to someone. I don’t even bother with an excuse, “oh no, look who’s calling, I have to go!!” I just glare, turn, and walk away. And he
still keeps trying, no matter how many times I coldly ice him. He WANTS me to to tell him to fuck off, and I won’t give the satisfaction.
Anyway. I’m thinking of illegally parking my car on the street instead of my driveway so we can’t see each other.
When he’s out there, I sadly put down my little book and blanket, and go back in, waiting for him to leave. But he’s an unemployed, self-proclaimed ‘Boulder collector’ so he’s out there a lot.
I just hate that this bully makes me uncomfortable in my own yard. I have to plan to go out there when his car is gone. I’m so sick of dealing with with him, but I know he’ll ruin my peaceful time outside. I shouldn’t give a fuck, but I know him, and I do. He makes it impossible to ignore him.
Sorry this was so long; feel free to share your own bully or bad neighbor stories 💕 and thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

2023.05.29 15:34 StylesFieldstone Got these two recently, my first Japanese pressings
| I got these for about $22 each + $5.99 shipping. I don’t think that’s a great deal but for the condition + the OBI which I think is cool I am happy. The jackets and discs are in great shape, sound perfect and make me want to get more Japanese pressings. This guy had 2 records and a bunch of non music stuff for sale, so I think I got lucky to find the only two records he was selling. submitted by StylesFieldstone to vinyl [link] [comments] |

2023.05.29 15:25 atomicbblonde Things I wasn’t prepared for as a first time Dane owner
Things I wasn’t prepared for as a first time Dane owner
This list is meant to be funny but maybe a little helpful to other first time Dane owners. We felt a little more prepared because we previously had a large, goofy, prone to health issues breed (Doberman) but there are some things I never would have thought of.
- Food being stuck in his jowls so when he goes to drink water chunks of food go in the bowl. If you’re lucky you have other gross dogs who then fish the soggy food pieces out of the water bowl
- The moment they learn you cannot physically move them or make them do anything because they are so big.
- The amount of diarrhea that can come out of a 120 lbs puppy.
- The amount of hamburger and rice required for just a few days due to said diarrhea.
- Typical puppy play nipping is a whole different ball game with giant puppies.
- Getting whacked in the face with a giant paw while sleeping.
- The amount of slobber one giant can produce.
- How much space one dog can take up - in the bed, on a couch, in a car.
- Trying to fit a 120lbs puppy in a bathtub…. And keep him there.
- Watching one dog put another dog’s ENTIRE head in their mouth when playing.
- Catching the attention of every person on the planet when going for a walk
- The amount of horse/saddle/“you can ride that thing”comments.
- What “typical” puppy destruction looks like when the culprit is 120lbs
- More seriously - the rules/tips and constant fear regarding health things like bloat and torsion, heart, joint, etc. (We were more prepared than most due to our Doberman having every health issue under the sun)
- The damage a giant tail can cause!! Both to humans and things around the house.
- Dane zoomies!!!! Watch your knees!
- Trying to correct a dog that is bigger than you not to jump on you when you walk in the door.
- Growing out of more collars in the first year of life than most dogs do in a lifetime
- The mid-high top table your husband built so that your “big” Doberman couldn’t reach it suddenly being the perfect height for a puppy to rest their head on while you eat.
- Your puppy being able to reach every high spot in the house where you hide non-puppy things.
- The grumbling!!! Am I the only one whose Dane talks back like a sassy teenager!?!? Is this a Dane thing!?
- How absolutely amazing snuggles are with a giant baby.
- 120lbs worth of puppy eyes that will melt your heart no matter how much he tests your patience.
