2023.05.29 17:30 MR_PHOENIX_JI [7 minute read] Observations of a first timer - Feel free to add
Learnings from a first timer :
I quit my job in Nov, travelled overseas for a while and started prep from Nov. As of 28 May morning, i had put in 1463 hours into my attempt (yeah i measured every single minute) . I am expecting 100+ in paper 1 and on brink (fingers crossed) in paper 2 and might fail in just average to worst case.
Here are my learnings:
- PERFORM PERFORM PERFORM : You have to perform in those exam hours. Knowledge, books etc ARE helpful but only till a point. IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO YOUR PREPARATION AND HOW YOU WRITE THE EXAM. Writing the exam is a CRITICAL skill that no book or coaching will teach, CAN TEACH AND ARE PERHAPS - INCAPABLE TO TEACH. EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT CONTENT AND OUTCOME - NO ONE TALKS ABOUT THE PROCESS YOU SHOULD PURSUE TO DIGEST THE CONTENT AND ARRIVE AT THE DESIRED OUTCOME. Everyone can solve a paper afterwards - but doing so in those 4 hours IN THE EXAM HALL counts. IN THE HALL, have to perform like a machine with RAW UNADULTERATED RUTHLESS FOCUS. YOU SHOULD NOT MAKE MISTAKES - AND NOT PANIC WHEN YOU FIND YOU MADE SOME. If you panic, you should know how to calm yourself down. Easy said than done but this should form a major portion of the preparation. In the end, its not about from where the paper comes, but how you do in whichever paper comes.
- PLANNING : You have to have a plan - for difficult paper, easy paper and what will you do in each case and what if all plans fail and at the same time not to over plan. You have to take crucial decisions in exam hall in case the paper is a googly. You have to remind of what has to be done in every case and what has to abstained from in ANY circumstance. You have to train to control your emotions and apprehensions. I remember story about a person from IITB(my sister went there, i didn’t) who used to set alarms in night and write an answer and then sleep. He would evaluate it in morning. He wanted to get an idea of how he would perform. That is the level of dedication you are up against. so better plan.
- MIND OVER MATTER : This is another overlooked factor and most important in my opinion. It is not about strategy x or strategy Y. Its about keeping your cool and self mastery. You should see that you have an effective response to probable contingencies. I saw a video of a guy emotional after screwing up interview. I feel you bro, but you just let your emotions get the better of you. So many hours wasted over a moment of laxity. As for me, I felt the pressure in CSAT after i could solve only 15 in first hour, ended up doing some stupid mistakes due to that and on the brink currently. IMO, You have to be so strong as not to crumble in the cumulative weight of your untamed expectations. YES EVERYONE IS EXPECTING, EVERYONE IS HOPEFUL, but you have to detach yourself from everything and perform when the bell rings. Remember, only your actions can free you from these petty distractions. Watching LBSNAA and royal entry videos will only condition you and attach you to what should be done REALLY SURGICALLY, DISPASSIONATELY AND METHODICALLY. Truly great ones add a factor of delight with their process while performing. Without optimum performance, you can never beat the best. AND REMEMBER, ONLY THE BEST MAKE THE CUT. MY SENIOR IN SERVICES TOLD ME - ONE MISTAKE AND YOU LOSE A RANK, TWO MISTAKES YOU WILL MISS THE CUT OFF. DON’T LET THIS EXAM BECOME THE BOULDER OF SISYPHUS.
- CONSTRAINED PREPARATION: I feel preparation should always be constrained. In prelims, you must complete the exam in 2 hours. While preparing in mocks, i set random alarms in between to simulate the times invigilator would interrupt me. I took printout of OMR. I sat near window in afternoon to simulate the case where my seat would be near a sunny window in afternoon. I woke up after sleeping three hours to check how i perform in mocks if i am not able to sleep on night before prelims. I really poured my heart out and still i am not sure. That’s how this exam is. Asymptotic scale and a gazillion probabilities - but only 2 outcomes. In Mains, you must write answers fast. If you don’t complete the paper in time, you are done. In Interview, you must calm yourself in the time and sing when your turn comes - without letting your emotions get better of you. I say we should also learn to control ourselves within a timeframe. So, the question is - WHEN THE EXAM PERFORMANCE CONDITIONS ARE CONSTRAINED, WHY SHOULDN’T THE PREPARATION BE? Quality folks will say do everything with quality, relax and read a book till you touch its soul - i say do the job in the stipulated time with desired quality. There is no end to quality. You just must reach the quality UPSC desires. Time is the REAL thing. THERE IS ALWAYS THIS CONSTRAINT OF TIME that will haunt us through our journey. At any given time, you HAVE TO DELIVER IN A STIPULATED TIME. You can study all books in the world you want, do everything XYZ sir recommends but if IT DOESN’T SERVE YOU IN EXAM HALL, I SAY ITS PRETTY DAMN USELESS. PREPARATION SHOULD ALSO BE VERY FUNDAMENTAL.
- FUNDAMENTALS OVER EVERYTHING: People will always whine how was this paper. People will always do after every paper. Yesterday was difficult, but kinda possible. S wave, P wave - DRC question - Somalia one - Coup one from 2022 PYQ and vision places in news, ballistic missile cruise missile - It had its share of easy ones also. UPSC can never deviate from syllabus. Foundations must be covered in any case. It can never go away from syllabus. There is a truth that is true for a certain time(age). When that truth becomes widely known such that it starts destroying the level playing field UPSC envisages, UPSC changes the game and ushers in a new age. Yesterday’s prelims heralded a new age. Prepare yourself for a series of coaching institutes start the claim game and DISCOVER NEW PATTERN.
- MARKET ECONOMY: UPSC has a flourishing market around it. Our veterans joined the coaching institutes and good for them. Nowadays, THERE IS LITTLE TRUTH AND TOO MANY LIES PEDDLED. Coaching Wallas also know they will get a new flock of sheep every year, regardless of how many candidates are failing. It's a set business. Only problem is, it is built on the dead aspirations of aspirants who gave it all but didn’t make it. FEW PEOPLE SUCCEED FOLLOWING THEIR ADVICE, but most fail. Some might say, 99% will still fail. But problem is, if you moved from the 1% to 99% due to wrong advice of someone you trusted, is it not their fault? Yes, you are responsible but is it all your fault. The best way to absolve is reflect on your own and find your own truth. STOP BEING THE PLAN B OF PEOPLE. YOU ARE NO MORE THAN A VIEW FOR MOST OF THEM. THEIR STRATEGIES ARE POOR GIMMICKS, THEIR ASSURANCES A JOKE - DROPPED AT THE FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE. STAY CLEAR AND USE THEM - DON’T LET THEM USE YOU.
I have said about “What” above - “HOW” everyone does it and “HOW” diligently we do it determines our fate. I think many successful candidates' folks have crossed IT know it better than me. Hell, i don’t even have a moral responsibility guiding folks when i am still at the gallows - but i thought i should speak what i feel. Let me know if i am wrong. Feel free to add your view guys.
PS : Also comment for flow and coherence guys. Its essay length already.
Yours truly, Fellow aspirant.

2023.05.29 17:25 IskoLat Mikhail Kalinin. "The People of Lithuania Are on a New Path"
| https://preview.redd.it/5688p24fwr2b1.jpg?width=895&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3021b4d79926759d554a2a85c503a6ff45ccadc9 On July 14-15 of 1940, elections to the People's Parliament [Liaudies Seimas] were held in Lithuania. These elections had an unusual content and significance compared to previous elections. Here the false declarations and unrealistic promises of all kinds of benefits to the people, which the bourgeois parties usually made, were put aside and pushed into obscurity by two cardinal issues: 1) On the proclamation of Lithuania as a fellow Soviet Socialist Republic and 2) On the accession of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic into the Soviet Union as a Union Republic. The overwhelming majority of the population took part in the elections - 95.51% of voters compared to 38% of voters who actually took part in the last elections. Moreover, 99.19% of voters voted for the candidates of the Union of the Working People of Lithuania. And this is natural, because the question was clear, understandable to everybody and affected every Lithuanian in one way or another. So, by voting for supporters of Lithuania's accession into the Soviet Union, one thereby determined his attitude to this issue. By voting in 1940, the Lithuanian people, perhaps for the first time in their entire history, could freely reveal their will and their aspirations as a whole, as a people, and, taking advantage of this opportunity, demanded the Soviet system of governance for themselves. https://preview.redd.it/orkigsid6s2b1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=600a561bbc9a4a8db02c0db02471c3b7d7b5d9d1 Reactionaries, enemies of the Soviet system of governance, were enraged by this result. Even the liberal democratic circles threw up their hands in surprise. Unable to find, and unwilling to look for the real reason for such a turn by the Lithuanian people, in the specific conditions of their life, they sought to discredit the elections themselves, the voting procedure. But even here these people suffered a fiasco: the genuine democratic nature of the elections did not give any real grounds for defaming them. And, nevertheless, this did not prevent the reactionary press from coming out with hostile articles and bringing forth, as expected from them, facts invented in the editorial offices. One should not be surprised here. On the contrary, it would be surprising if, say, not the reactionary, but at least the liberal-bourgeois press reacted to these elections positively. In fact, how much work was spent for the political deception of the people, for propaganda and agitation, for school "education", religious influence, administrative pressure, etc.! Mountains of slander were pushed against the USSR, against the Soviet government! It is difficult even to name all the means the Smetona government used to influence the Lithuanian people in order to discourage them from any desire to find out the truth about real life in the Soviet Union, in order to isolate the Lithuanians from even the slightest influence of Soviet culture. For this purpose, it sought maximum isolation of Lithuania from the USSR, not only politically and culturally, but also economically. It seemed that there were no channels, no ways through which the Lithuanian people's ties with the Soviet Union could develop. However, the actual reality cruelly mocked those who worked so zealously to darken the consciousness of the Lithuanian people, those who tried their best to introduce inertia and indifference into the consciousness of the people. At the first opportunity, the Lithuanian people loudly declared: I want to be a member of the Soviet Union! That's what infuriated the enemies of the Soviet form of governance and still infuriates them to this day. What mean reasons pushed the Lithuanian people on the path to the Soviet system, to its accession into the USSR? There are many very convincing reasons. That they are serious is clear to every Lithuanian, because with his mother's milk he was instilled with the thought that the most valuable thing is the independence of his own country, its greatness. But reasonable people had doubts about the "independence" that Lithuania had, uncertainty about its reality, because the facts contradicted it too much. No sooner had the republic organized itself and the government settled in its capital, Vilnius, than a certain Polish general with his detachment of troops seized Vilnius, expelled the Lithuanian government, and the capital of Lithuania was annexed to Poland, and Lithuania lost its largest and most industrialized city. For the sake of decency, the press made a little noise, and that was the end of it. The suzerain powers did not even lift a finger to restore the violated rights of Lithuania, because the attacker was also patronized by them and probably more valuable as an open enemy of the Soviet Union. With Hitler's rise to power in Germany, the specter of Lithuania's "independence" has diminished even more. In 1939, Hitler seized Klaipeda, and the Lithuanian government, filled with fear for its own existence, was glad that the seizure was limited only to the Klaipeda region and the treaty, which in effect included the entire Lithuanian economy in the German economic master plan. I do not want to accuse the government that existed of not wanting to do anything to defend the country, but only to illustrate the phantom nature of the "independence" of Lithuania during that time. It would be a mistake to think that the Lithuanian people did not strive for real independence. In 1919, after the expulsion of German troops, the Soviet government was established in Lithuania, which signed an alliance with Soviet Belarus. But the real independence of Lithuania was quickly liquidated by the Entente and the German troops called into the fight by it. In the language of the European bourgeois press, this was called the "restoration" of Lithuanian "independence". The country's politics and economy developed in accordance with external conditions. After the defeat of the Soviet government, a democratic government was organized. (It was impossible to immediately install a fascist regime after crushing the Soviet government). It didn't last long. Apparently, the common path of development of the Baltic countries was manifested here: the suppression of the Soviet government -> democracy (as a transitional form of power) -> fascism. Obviously, for some "champions" of democracy, fascism is more acceptable, because any democracy, even by a tiny bit, at least for appearance's sake, must do something in the interests of the people. Fascism does not even concern itself with such tasks. That is why fascism in small countries is encouraged by the big "guardians of democracy". The establishment of the fascist regime in Lithuania, the Smetona regime, made Lithuania into a cash cow for German capital. The Germans were not content with just subjugating the Lithuanian economy to their plan. They methodically introduced themselves into all the avenues of Lithuanian life, turning Lithuania into a springboard for an attack on the Soviet Union, which, in fact, they did not hide from Smetona, who shared their thoughts. On the contrary, the preparation of Lithuania's territory for military purposes seemed to justify the introduction of Germans into all the pores of Lithuanian life. In this way, the Germans killed two birds with one stone: 1) They prepared a military bridgehead and 2) Quietly adapted Lithuania into a German Hinterland. The Smetona government saw the danger that threatened the independent existence of Lithuania, and, in fact, did not resist German aggression, trying to curry favor with Hitler, with whose support it now owed its existence to. The only hope of Smetona and his supporters was that they would remain in power under German fascism in one form or another and would exploit at least some part of the people's labor. The above facts clearly show what was really hidden under the decorum of Lithuanian "independence". Smetona's internal policy naturally corresponded to the external one. It consisted in imitation of German fascism, in adapting it to local conditions. Now even the blind can see that fascism with its ideology and politics is a terrible social evil generated by the era of imperialism. Anyone who has been to the south has seen with his own eyes how a huge tree - pine, oak, cypress - was wrapped by a parasitic plant with bright green leaves. With its stems, it presses tightly against the tree, and numerous shoots dig into the bark and pull out the juices. It is possible to save a tree from death only by destroying this parasitic plant. Fascism is a parasite of the state tree. And if the people do not destroy it in a timely manner, it will inevitably lead the country to the greatest of disasters. Experience has shown that fascism is equally fatal for both large and small countries alike. Having no desire to awaken the creative forces of the people, on the contrary, deliberately putting them to sleep, so that it would be easier to turn people into an obedient herd, the fascist leaders, for example, in Hungary, Romania, etc., shouted furiously: "Great Hungary!", "Great Romania!". It was laughable. But all the fascist meanness was hidden behind this farce. As for Smetona, he did not even have this prop. His main desire was to cover up, if possible, his dependence on Hitler, to disguise it in front of the Lithuanian people. The task is difficult and, in fact, impossible, because the Germans climbed and penetrated into all the holes and cracks, seized banks, and through them the industrial enterprises, wholesale trade, flooded the country with their literature, films and generally felt no worse in Lithuania than they would at home. In short: there was, perhaps not quite noticeable to the eyes of an ordinary person, but an inevitable process of germanizing Lithuania [1]. Relations between Germany and Lithuania progressed towards not only the actual but also the formal transformation of Lithuania into a German colony (Smetona's request to Hitler about the entry of German troops into Lithuania). If Smetona, seeing all this danger, even wanted to prevent it, then, having neither material nor military resources, and most importantly, not using the moral support of the Lithuanian people, he would not be able to resist German aggression. Smetona had only one path left, which he followed: no resistance, but harmonizing the life of the whole country with German demands and humble obedience to Hitler. With such a "policy" he decided to prolong the appearance of Lithuania's "independent" existence. Naturally, such a government could not satisfy the people. It could not and did not want to serve the interests of the Lithuanian people. The narrow egoistic interests of this government were closely linked with German interests, and its spiritual demands were related to Hitlerism. It means that the entire state policy of Smetona's government rested on the enrichment of a small handful of people, on the systemic robbery of the people, on the strangulation and all-round emasculation of their national culture. Perhaps there is no country - both in Europe and in the Americas - where Lithuanian migrants who fled from their native country not only from political repression, but even more simply from hunger, would not be found. The Lithuanian intelligentsia, especially the progressive intelligentsia, was not in the best position either. The opportunity to live and breathe was only in leaving, because they had no work in their native country, and fascism stifled every free thought. The fascist octopus tightly wrapped itself around the Lithuanian people and led them to their imminent death. https://preview.redd.it/ipp1pzqt3s2b1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=1de6d0bb0a3864dd560557346226e8f300cfb67e These are the reasons that prompted the Lithuanian people to vote for Lithuania's entry into the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Of course, when voting, the Lithuanian people not only desired to get rid of the unbearable conditions in which their life took place, but they fully took into account the benefits and advantages that the Soviet system brings them. One of the serious factors is that the Lithuanian people, having joined the USSR, acquired real independence. The enemies persistently insist that Lithuania is dependent, since it is one of the sixteen republics in the Union. But these are all enemy fairy tales. Why are entrepreneurs organized into government trusts, syndicates and enterprises? They will say that there is a naked calculation of increased profits from the monopoly. Yes, that's right. True, some of the propertied classes hypocritically condemn them for this from a "moral" point of view. But only the workers' organizations are really fighting them. And trusts, syndicates and enterprises are developing and growing stronger. At the same time, it does not occur to any entrepreneur that he is losing his industrial independence. I will give other examples. Now everywhere workers and employees unite in trade unions. Who can say that they lose their personal freedom and independence at the same time? Moreover, the trade unions of workers and employees of any state strive to be members of an international professional organization. And this is quite natural, because each of them understands that this is the only way the one can defend personal freedom and independence. Furthermore, a peasant, protecting his well-being, enters a cooperative, and the coop association formed in the country links up with cooperative organizations of other countries, and there is already an international cooperative association - the alliance. Only moneylenders, predatory traders and speculators can shed crocodile tears over the fact that peasants that are united in cooperatives cease to be independent landowners. Every association is an organization that restricts an individual to one degree or another. For example, the same peasant, who is a member of a cooperative, undertakes to hand over all or part of his marketable products to the coop. This restricts the peasant in his freedom to dispose of his products in a way. But in reality, the coop protects him from a predatory buyer. The USSR has sixteen Union republics with a well-known, but equal limitation of their sovereignty. They form a single union state with a different national way of life, with a diverse national form of culture and historical past. Only the Soviet system and Lenin's national policy ensure and guarantee them unbreakable unity and genuine friendship, real freedom and independence. Protecting the whole, the Soviet system and Lenin's national policy give full opportunity for the unlimited development of each republic, every nationality… The enormous work by our party to create and strengthen the multinational state has been a complete success. Comrade Stalin said the following: "The absence of the exploiter classes, which are the main masterminds behind the international conflict; the absence of exploitation, with its mutual distrust and brewing nationalist passions; the presence of power of the working class, which is the enemy of all enslavement and a faithful bearer of the ideas of internationalism; the actual implementation of mutual assistance of peoples in all areas of economic and social life; finally, the flourishing of the national culture of the peoples of the USSR, national in form, socialist in content - all these and similar factors have led to the following: the appearance of the peoples of the USSR has radically changed, the feeling of mutual distrust has disappeared in them, a sense of mutual friendship has developed in them and, thus, real fraternal cooperation of peoples has been established in the system of a single union state. As a result, we now have a fully developed multinational socialist state that has withstood all the tests of time, the strength of which could be envied by any nation-state in any part of the world" [2] During the Great Patriotic War, the strength of the cohesion of the peoples of the Soviet Union, based on Lenin's national policy, withstood enormous trials. The war with fascist Germany and its satellite states clearly showed how valuable the Soviet Union is for every Union Republic. The enemy occupied all of Lithuania and went far beyond its borders to the east. It seemed that the country had perished under the Nazi boot. But far from the Lithuanian borders, near Orel, a Lithuanian division fought in the All-Union Red Army. And in the capital of the Soviet Union, Moscow, there was a Lithuanian government that called upon and organized, as much as possible, the forces capable of fighting inside Lithuania. No matter how loud the German military drums thundered, no matter how much fascist propaganda tried to distort the actual situation on the fronts and in the rear of the Soviet armies, no matter how cruelly the Gestapo tortured Soviet patriots, the Lithuanian people heard and saw that a fierce struggle for their liberation was going on. This undoubtedly inspired him with great confidence in victory, inspired the partisans in their difficult and daring struggle in the distant rear of the enemy, and their heroic actions, in turn, raised the spirit and morale of the people. The names of Marytė Melnikaitė, Urbanavičius (Kurmelis), Apyvala, Vladas Baronas, Jacinavičius, Motieka and others have earned glory not only by themselves, but also because they embody the best traditions of the Lithuanian people, their heroism and boundless devotion to their Homeland. Bronius Urbanavičius Next, let's take the work efficiency of the people as a whole. Statesmen, industrialists, journalists of capitalist countries continuously call for increased labor productivity as the basis of the country's well-being. The fascist Lithuanian government was not far behind in this. But with the policy pursued by this government, with Lithuania's economic dependence on Germany, the limits of increasing labor efficiency were very limited, and this increase was mainly directed at greater exploitation of the workers. Lithuania's economic development also had purely objective limitations: the small territory of the country, the absence of the main elements necessary for production - coal, iron and generally valuable ores, its predominantly agrarian nature. All this, as it were, naturally predetermined the backwardness of Lithuanian industry and, what is most tragic, the lack of prospects in the future. By joining the Soviet Union, the Lithuanian people radically transformed the economic situation of their country. From an appendage of Germany, from the backwater of Europe, Lithuania received unlimited opportunities to turn into an advanced and highly developed national republic, as a full member of the great Union. Now her household will be built in a new way. The structure of the industry will change, it will acquire a character corresponding to modern advanced state of technology. It is now provided with a powerful raw material base and an unlimited market for the sale of its products. There are no objective obstacles to specialization, and hence to increase in the efficiency of labor, as the basis of welfare of the people. In fact, what can now prevent the construction of any factory specialized in the production of any type of goods? Nothing but a shortage of skilled workers, engineers and technical personnel among Lithuanians. I will illustrate my point with an example. In Lithuania, for example, a machine tooling or machine-building plant is being erected. The Union as a whole needs thousands of machines, the plant also produces thousands of machines, but the Republic of Lithuania can use only hundreds or dozens of machines - such is its need for the kind of machines that this plant produces. Wouldn't it be better for the plant to produce machines only for this republic? Of course, technically it is possible, but economically it will be irrational, unprofitable, production will become artisanal and, most importantly, the quality of products will be worse, productivity is much lower. In this way, not only will we not get closer to the American technological level, but we will move away from it, even if the plant had first-class equipment. But the socialist economy strives for a higher productivity of labor than that which capitalism is able to create in its most advanced countries. Thus, in order to have high labor productivity and its efficiency, it is not enough to have a wish and even a desire to have it, but we also need the appropriate economic and social conditions that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics gives to all constituent republics. With these arguments, I do not want to belittle or downplay the importance of local or Republican industry, which mainly fulfills local needs. But local industry can also work productively only if it is abundantly supplied with good machines. This is well understood by the leaders of the Republics, who also bear responsibility for the enterprises of all-Union significance. The Soviet government invested a lot of money and labor in the development of agriculture, which became the largest and most mechanized agriculture in the world. It has become productive, of which the best proof is the satisfaction of its military needs. Lithuanian agriculture is considered productive, it produced significant products for export. But we cannot close our eyes and ignore the fact that this productivity was based on the enormous exertion of the peasantry, on the hard work of the middle peasant on his farm and the farmhand in a larger farm. Physical labor took up their entire lives, leaving no time to satisfy their spiritual needs. Under the Soviet system of governance, the Lithuanian peasant will not agree to such a life. His public interests are rapidly expanding, cultural demands are growing, which require time to satisfy themselves. The Soviet government highly values labor, celebrating labor feats with awards. But at the same time, it spares no expense to increase cultural and political education of the village. All this imperiously requires mechanization, the introduction of modern agricultural machines adapted to Lithuanian conditions. These are the ways and means by which the Soviet government increases labor productivity both in industry and in agriculture. Undoubtedly, the Lithuanian people are using these opportunities to their fullest. Of course, it is not easy to move forward the economy and culture of the entire country, especially if it has a lot to catching up to do. But the life of the people, their well-being, demand this first and foremost. The creative forces of the people are inexhaustible, you just need to be able to awaken them. The questions that I have asked casually and slightly indicate the enormous and complex nature of the tasks facing the Lithuanian people and its intelligentsia. Fulfilling the program set by the Communist Party, the Union Government not only protects, but also ensures the flourishing of national culture of each Union republic, the established customs and, in particular, the native language of its peoples. It creates all the necessary conditions for the fruitful work of the intelligentsia in its field. Therefore, the Lithuanian intelligentsia bears full responsibility to its people for the cultural prosperity of the republic. The national school is the first step in human development, the most important stage in the process of forming an active citizen and a patriot of his Homeland - therefore, it must be at the Homeland's top priority. During the implementation of this program, the Homeland should instill in the younger generations a love for their native language, folk songs, native landscape and at the same time expand the horizon of students as future citizens of the Soviet Union, and collectively instill in them a love for the great and multinational Motherland – the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. From this we see that the understanding of all-Union Soviet patriotism is not opposed to the local one. It is from local patriotism, as a popular source, that patriotism grows towards the Soviet system of governance, towards the USSR as a whole. I think the Lithuanian government helps a lot and in the future will allocate even more of its resources towards the development of literature in the Lithuanian language, especially original fiction, drawing its plots from Lithuanian folk life and contributing to the awakening of new creative forces in the people. Without a doubt, Lithuania will take an honorable place among the Union republics in the development of all kinds of art and sports, and its folk choirs will be an inexhaustible source for the development of national music and theater. https://preview.redd.it/5oo4a5c1fs2b1.jpg?width=805&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7d15083c272edffd9f4f5f3a8e8285210e4f05f8 The war is over. The shackles that bound the creative forces of the Lithuanian people have been removed forever. I sincerely wish the Lithuanian people success in building their Soviet state, in the development of industry, agriculture and culture, national in form and socialist in its content. Ko-fi *The Solstice army was formed by Asumpta, it is her pride and joy and I look forward to fucking her upon a field of her dead comrades. *
The late Prince Lewis. They found themselves in a wide room with a singular chair in its midst, the chair occupied the center of the room and behind it stood the Solstice army of women. Three hundred captains representing three hundred regiments stood behind the chair. And Asumpta, leader of the Solstice occupied the chair which was in fact a throne.
Before her stood Honey Badger, Tweek, Juice and Astro Boy.
Honey Badger had changed of his Lethal strapper and wore a blue robe made of linen, smooth to the touch and soft to the feel. Juice had been given a similar robe that was conjoined of two robes in order to cover his bulk. Tweek still wore his blue shirt complete with the yellow tie with red polka dots and black pants. Astro Boy stood in his green Adjunct to be robes. Together they stood in silence and faced the woman on the throne, their eyes occasionally darted to the women behind the throne whose silence spoke volumes of the prestige such a gathering held.
"Tevorah." Asumpta started. "By your help we have brought down a tyrant who'd sought to enslave us all beneath a heel of tyranny. It is due to this fine gesture on your part that we have called the council of the Solstice to a meeting so we may know of what reward you desire in turn for your good efforts to purge us free of Prince Lewis and his band of buffoons."
"We desire only your heart." Honey Badger said while taking a step forward and out of line. "I desire your heart." He corrected.
Asumpta suppressed a smile and there were a few giggles from the women behind her. "My heart belongs to the Solstice, it is sworn to it for all eternity. I am a woman of war."
Honey Badger nodded. "Okay then, on second thought, we desire the Solstice army."
An eruption of muttering filled the chamber. Asumpta shook her head from side to side. "You have given us our home world back to us, liberated it free of the enemy but asking for the army to be your own simply cannot be, we are vowed to serve the needs of Zagarath."
Honey Badger nodded once more. "Listen, women of the Solstice. We are at war with more than just a singular Prince. Us Tevorah are doomed to be the hunted, to forever flee for our lives and cower in hiding for fear of our throats getting slit." He raised a hand, palm up. "We wish to be free of this, to hunt down the suitors instead of them making sport of us. We wish to liberate ourselves just as you have been liberated. We seek freedom." Honey turned and regarded his friends, Tweek was shocked at his eloquence. Honey turned back to Asumpta and her army. "We also require milk–"
Tweek stepped forward. "Okay that's enough." He interrupted Honey. "What my companion is trying to say is, we are at war without an army."
Juice stepped forward. "And what we require is an army to attack the suitors."
Astro Boy spoke from where he stood. "That is all we may require of you."
A silence engulfed the chamber they were in. Lyan stepped forward, free of the captains behind the throne, she leaned down and whispered into Asumpta's ear. Asumpta perked up at the words whispered by Lyan. She raised a hand and Lyan retreated to her position behind the throne.
"Tevorah." Asumpta started. "We do not have an army to give you that can fight all your battles but we can spare our army for one battle. There is a woman among our ranks who thirsts for war, she is currently in a holding cell under strict orders from me to be contained so she wouldn't charge Prince Lewis's army by herself. We shall offer her to you, to accompany you on your missions and with her will be a beacon, one that will signal us for one battle and one battle alone, we shall come to the beacon's call and fight for you Tevorah as you have done for us."
"That is an acceptable gift." Juice said. "One battle owed is a fair deal."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
They sat in various poses within the warship, awaiting the delivery of the mystery woman who was to accompany them on their missions.
"What if she has teeth like a crocodile?" Honey Badger asked.
"Nobody has teeth like a crocodile, you'd require a snout like a crocodile in order to have teeth like a crocodile." Tweek said from his position on the chair flanking the pilot's seat where Honey sat.
"There's a procedure you can do to have crocodile teeth." Astro Boy said from his position on the seat behind the captain's chair.
"Why would anyone want to do that?" Tweek asked.
"It's the surest way you can have sex with a crocodile." Juice said from where he stood, all heads turned to him, he peered around, puzzled. "It's not rocket science guys, if you want to approach a crocodile to have coitus with it you should at least resemble it."
"I second that!" Honey Badger said while raising a cup holding some mead that the women had delivered to their ship in bulk as a parting gift.
A short silence ensued that was punctuated by Tweek. "Say, why did the women usher us so fast into our ship?"
"They want us gone from their lands." Honey answered.
"Why?" Tweek asked. "You just won them a war that's been going on for over two decades, they should at least have let us stay for a while."
"We are Tevorah." Juice said.
"And what's so bad about that?" Tweek wondered.
"It means the suitors are coming after us, what's the point of winning one war just to fight nine more." Astro Boy said to which Tweek nodded though he wondered as to the meaning of Astro Boy's 'us'.
Suddenly the Droid floated into the cockpit.
"Three women at the ship's entrance." It intoned.
The four of them stood up and moved with an almost childlike eagerness to the side of the ship's entrance where a ramp ejected itself from the ship's hull to come to a stand beneath the ship where three women stood.
Two towering women had a small lithe woman in their midst, the woman had chains akin to the ones they'd been put in and the two women flanking her spoke to her and brushed at her amber mess of a tangled mane upon her head.
"Everything is going to be very bloody Zahara." The woman on the left said.
"There will be a lot of blood and gore." The woman on the right added.
"You'll love it." They said in unison.
Zahara mumbled something incoherent and the two women nodded. "Yes, there will also be decapitations a lot of beheading." They led her up the ramp and Tweek noticed the muzzle wired around her mouth with a keypad dangling over the left ear.
As soon as the two women delivered the woman they retreated hastily down the ramp and one screamed from afar. "The code to her locks is three double four."
"What?"Tweek asked as he stared at the small woman before them.
The woman immediately tilted her arms outwards and bent them inwards, through the chains her fingers reached the keypad holding the chains around her. She put in the code and the chains dangled free of her. She moved like the wind, turning on the first person close to her. Tweek received a knee to the groin, he doubled over, mouth heaving a pained breath. In an instant she was among them, mumbling incoherently through her muzzle. She pounced on Astro Boy with an upward jab, the Adjunct to be backtracked a step and the jab missed. She dove forward with her shoulder and connected to his chest. Both of them tumbled to the ground, Zahara reached for the keypad of the muzzle, she input a code while her legs were spread over a pinned Astro Boy, the muzzle came free and she brandished dagger sharp teeth that seemed to have been sharpened.
"She's a crocodile." Astro Boy said and screamed.
She lunged forward with her teeth, aiming for Astro Boy's neck but a hand around her neck stilled her attack.
"If you continue on your current path, I will snap your neck." Juice said, leaning over her with a hand to her neck. "Now nod if you understand me." She nodded. "Are you the one promised us?" A nod. "Do you have the beacon?" She dug into her pocket and raised a circular object that blinked with a blue light. "Good." Juice eased his grip on her neck. "You're Zahara I presume." Nod. "I am Juice. Here beside me is Honey Badger, the man you're currently on top of is Astro Boy and the one you kneed to the balls is Tweek." Tweek groaned from his position on the floor. "I'm going to let you go now, if you promise to act civilized." A nod.
Juice let go of Zahara. She turned her neck around to regard the men all around her. "I was promised a war." She said, her shrill voice carrying through the ship.
"Stick with us lass, and more than one war will find you." Honey Badger said. "Love your teeth by the way."
"I didn't curve them so they could be loved." Zahara said while getting off of Astro Boy. She wore tight leather pants and a Lethal hauberk of a rusty grey color. "I sharpened them so I can bite down and rip necks free of the spine."
"Im going to love having her around." Honey Badger said.

2023.05.29 17:09 EnvironmentalSun5882 POOR CARTER
2023.05.29 17:09 Log_F i just feel like i'm wasting my life
i really only have 2 friends. one of which doesn't even go to my school, and the other is somewhat in a similar situation as me. i don't "go out". like at all. never have, tbh i just don't know what i would even do. what''s even more infuriating is that my younger brother goes out with his friends all the time. also i should mention he's at a new school. so within 1 school year he's already made like 6 friends that like do stuff. i literally don't even know how to talk to people. all i do is waste my life with stupid shit like 3d printing and fucking 30 year old computers. like why can't i be interested in sports or cars or something normal. another thing that annoys me is school, i spend7 hours a day at school not being able to pay attention for even 5 minutes and then i get home and spend another 7 hours trying to rebuild a computer from 1993 or fixing the 100th broken part of my 3d printer, all while being as focused and dedicated as a person possible can be. like how does that work. idk what the point of this post was, congrats if you've made it this far. i'm just tired. of everything.

2023.05.29 17:00 woah-im-colin Anyone know of any seat covers for the Scram 411?
2023.05.29 16:56 Glum-Poet-5780 Did I overreact to this?
Hey I’m 21F now, the instance I’m talking about was from when I was in 17. I was hanging out with a few of my friends and we were all getting drunk at the beginning of the night. I was starting to sober up more around 3-4 am but still was a little bit drunk. (Not drunk enough to not remember anything) My friend was also 17 and was hugging me a lot throughout the night but I didn’t think it was weird I’ve usually been always physically affection (hugs and cuddles) with all of my friends, and nothing sexual ever came out of it. I knew this guy for about 4 years at this point. I got hungry and I wanted to go to McDonald’s at like 5 in the morning so we all loaded up in one car. There was 6 people and only 5 seats, so I just sat in my friend’s lap. The whole ride there I could feel him grinding on me. I didn’t wanna make a huge scene because there was alot of people in the car that I didn’t really know that well, so I didn’t say anything. Whenever we got back to the house I was really scared to move at all because I didn’t want to give him the wrong impression. After everyone got out of the car he reached his hand over me and started rubbing my vagina through my leggings for like a split second before I pulled his arm away and got out of the car. He hopped up and said “I’m sorry I’m sorry” then went back inside really quickly. The next morning I asked him why he did that and he just said “I don’t know” and went back to sleep so I went outside to smoke a cigarette. His brother was another close friend of mine and he was asking to come smoke with me and I told him what happened. Him and his brother started gaslighting the fuck out of me saying that he didn’t even remember that happening, we were all drunk, and he even said “how do we know you weren’t going around touching us?” So I just started crying and I left. He texted me again trying to apologize but he was still saying he didn’t remember doing that so I went off on him pretty bad. He worked with me so I went to work and went off on him again (he got in trouble 🫣 but no one said anything to me lol). He grew up in an abusive home and got removed a little after I first met him. His brothers mom adopted him. He ended going to prison maybe not even a year later (not really sure what for). I feel really bad for treating him that way now because I know he didn’t have much guidance growing up and I don’t really know if I should’ve been so mad about that. Was that even a sexual assault? Or should I just let it go when he said sorry the first time?

2023.05.29 16:54 mohoe87 2023 Kia Sorento Seat Cover
Hey all! We recently got our Sorento and was looking for a child seat cover (mat) for the Captain's chair style seat. All I could find is the weather tech style, but they do not fit properly. Any suggestions?

2023.05.29 16:52 AggressorBLUE Best forward facing Car seat for 19’ Passport?
Hi all! My parents have 19’ Passport, as the car seat we just picked up (Graco Tranzitions 3-in-1 Harness Booster Car Seat) just did not work. Part of it seems to be a poor design of the seat; when using the regular belt to secure it (my 4 YO is now past the weight limit for the Latch system), there’s no way it could ever work; the angle it holds the seat at leaves way too much room for ‘yaw’ side to side. (FWIW, we also tried the seat in our 19’ Odyssey, had the same issue). We’d buy the model seat we’re using in our Ody, which has been great, but it’s now out of production.
So I figured I’d ask the Passport loving hive mind what models they’ve found work best. :)
(PS: You all have great taste btw! It’s an excellent SUV, my parents love theirs! I’ve been eyeing up the Ridgeline myself…)

2023.05.29 16:50 Panasit My Students Tried to Eat My Liver
I taught at a strict vocational college that forced students to wear uniforms and bow to elders. As someone who let students call him by his first name and played Valo with them, I was not surprised when my boss called me into his office. I was ready to defend myself, but I was hit with:
“Are you aware that your students are descendants of a cannibal?” Truthfully? Sort of. I knew that in 1600, colonists invaded the island and enslaved the natives. A pirate named Sur-Linyao slaughtered the colonists and became the island’s folk hero.
Murals and statues of Sur-Linyao were all over the island. His signature look was his
very long tongue sticking out of his mouth. The symbol on his pirate flag was a six-dot triangle. Technically, Sur-Linyao didn't eat ALL of the colonists, just one organ. First, he tied each colonist to a tree. Sur-Linyao then
cut out each man’s liver and ate it raw with chili paste while staring into the person’s eyes. Sur-Linyao then threw that bleeding and squirming colonist into a dirty shallow pond, where Komodo dragons, attracted to the blood, devoured the victim alive.
The school rector handed me a photograph. It showed a male Westerner smiling while kicking a statue of Sur-Linyao while two women cheered him on. The three in the photo were humanitarian workers. Traces of candle wax at the base of Sur-Linyao’s statue showed that the islanders worshipped the liver-eating pirate, and for some reason, the workers felt they needed to do something about that. The three thought that their 6 months long relationship-building with natives on the island earned them enough goodwill for them to get away with that kind of stunt. Just a few hours after the photo was taken, the hacked body parts of all three were found scattered all over the beach. Their livers were missing.
The rector then stared right at me, preparing me for his next sentence. “Before you think that I’m a racist who is prejudging the modern-day natives as liver-eating savages based on what their ancestors did hundreds of years ago, you should know that the killings happened in 2017. To put things in perspective, the Nintendo Switch was already out.”
The rector then revealed that he called me into his office to ask me about an incident a day before.
There was a report that a White man with a goatee whistled at a native girl inside a convenience store on the south side of the island. He asked if that was me.
I was shocked. That was the reason he called me in here? I told him no. Apparently, there were only about 30 Caucasians on this island of 20,000 people, and only a few had a goatee. The rector then told me that a cop and the girl’s father and an older brother went to my dorm to look for me but I wasn’t there.
After seeing the look of horror on my face, wondering what would have happened if I was at the dorm, the rector told me not to panic and that he will talk to the cop and the girl’s family on my behalf. The rector ended our meeting with, “Just be careful AJ. We are the minority here. I hope to god you know what that means.”
For the past few classes, I started letting my students analyze Western media and culture. Thanks to globalization, these island kids watched and played the same media content as others their age around the world: Stranger Things, MCU, Fortnite, etc. As their teacher, I was often asked to comment on controversial topics like: “AJ, what do you think about a Neo-Nazi being punched before he does anything?” “AJ, what do you think about Black Lives Matter?” “AJ, what do you think about Go Woke Go Broke?” “AJ, what do you think about Don’t-Say-Gay-Bill?”
My answer was always to not ask me what I think, but for them to gather information from various sources and come to their own conclusion. Since more than ⅔ of the class were teenage males, their views were… not very much aligned with mine. But even though I disagreed with them, I felt like we had a healthy discussion.
I then noticed a student, Stephanie, seemed very unhappy as she shoved her notebook into her bag at the end of class. “You know I used to love your class. But I think these past few classes were shits.”
I was confused. Stephanie was one of my best students. She always sat in front and answered all questions correctly last semester. I asked her right away what was wrong.
“Is it going to kill you to just outright say that racism is wrong, misogyny is wrong, homophobia is wrong, and Naziism is wrong? Why does it have to always have to be a healthy debate?” I was shocked by her response. I told her that I don’t think a teacher should just outright tell students what to think, especially when it comes to social issues.
I mean, of course, I think racism, misogyny, Naziism, and homophobia are wrong. But I guess I would feel like I was brainwashing the students if I just tell them: this is what you must believe.
Stephanie scoffed. “Well, now Benny and his gang think that you approved of their homophobia and misogyny. You didn’t want to correct them not because you are this free-thinker, but in reality you just want them to think that you are a “too cool to care” edge lord just like them, right? Do you think the disenfranchised people enjoy watching others debate whether or not they should have the right to exist and feel safe? How would you feel if one day the island natives have a healthy debate about whether you should live or die?” Stephanie then stormed out.
Needless to say, I was not in a good mood that evening. I took it out on the students playing survivors while I was playing as a killer on Dead by Daylight. After getting slaughtered the students were not happy.
“AJ, why were you tunneling me?” A student named Benny asked after I sacrificed him within fifteen minutes. I thought that was rich coming from Benny, who, as a killer, only played Leatherface and Facecamp-ed all his victims the entire match. My response was snarky. “Benny, why don’t you try hiding like the other survivors instead of running around the map like a decapitated chicken?” The other students laughed. Benny didn’t respond right away, which made me feel kind of bad. Benny eventually responded after about two minutes.
“I can’t wait to eat your liver, AJ.” My heart dropped to the floor. Did Benny just threaten me? I was waiting for the other students to call him out on that comment, but they were silent. After about thirty seconds, Benny continued,
“I bet your liver tastes delicious, AJ. I bet it is so sweet and juicy I won’t even need a chili sauce.” The day after, I tried to spin that whole experience as a teachable moment. I decided the next class lecture was going to be about influential people and why people are so divided over them.
I listed some controversial ‘a hero to some, a villain to others’ figures for them.
Che Guevara Napoleon Edward Snowden Hoping to have some more healthy debates. But the students do not have strong enough opinions about the figures that were so distant in relevance to them.
So, I did something that was probably the biggest mistake of my life. I asked them about the island's liver-eating hero, Sur-Linyao. Benny said that there’s nothing controversial about Sur-Linyao unless some douchebag wants to sympathize with the genocidal colonists he slaughtered.
I reminded Benny that if someone were to hear his comments in the previous class, they could accuse him of sympathizing with sexist racist homophobic Nazis too. Like an arrogant idiot, instead of leaving it at that, I decided it was healthy to hit them with some truth about Sur-Linyao.
Sur-Linyao was a horrifying villain to the islanders before the colonists arrived. He was a pirate after all. Sur-Linyao would regularly pillage several villages on the island, killing several innocent people in the process. Seeing the six-dots triangle jolly-roger from the distance must have been a nightmare for the islanders at the time.
And Sur-Linyao didn’t kill the colonists out of the goodness of his heart. There were pieces of evidence that showed Sur-Linyao worked with the colonists for years, and in the end, betrayed the colonists just because he wanted to rob them. Benny shook his head. He told me that several people in this class were direct descendants of Sur-Linyao, including him. I chuckled, thinking that he just WISHED he was a descendant of Sur-Linyao. But Benny said he could prove it.
More than half of the male students in the class stood up. They slightly tilted their head down but their eyes kept on looking forward, staring at me. Suddenly, their tongue started to slither out of their mouth. The tongues were too long, longer than a foot, but it was not the length that unsettled me, but the way it wiggled out of each of their mouth as if they were separate creatures. I was horrified looking at the dozen students standing in front of me, staring at me with their long tongues dangling out.
Benny then said, “Do you know what the six-dots triangle means, AJ? It means that the man seeing it was about to lose his liver.” I always parked my car a bit further away from the school because I didn’t want to fight with other faculty members over the parking space underneath the building. Besides, I didn’t mind walking a bit since there was a nice view of the ocean. As I was getting out of the car, I saw that someone painted the six-dots triangle on an abandoned water tank in the middle of the field. It was new, I didn’t see it the day before. And I was more than certain
it was meant for me to see. No one parked where I parked and the surrounding area was abandoned.
I went and told the school administrator about this. They said that the six-dot triangle symbol was a symbol of Sur-Linyao who has pictures all over the island, including that symbol on his forehead.
It was not an intimidation symbol like a swastika and that I should relax.
Frustrated, I went back to my dorm. The view from my balcony was almost great, but there was a weird Ferris wheel-like structure blocking part of it. I didn’t even know what the circular structure was, but there seemed to be a bunch of neon light bulbs attached to it. I hoped it never got turned on or else I wouldn’t be able to sleep.
As I went into my closet, I found a T-shirt that was not mine. On it was a phrase, ‘I’m the Other White Meat’ on it. Why was this in my closet? Did the dry cleaner mix in someone else’s clothes with mine? Who would dry clean a T-shirt? I realized then that my room may have been broken into.
I was nervous and scared out of my mind. Am I being targeted or am I just overreacting? Is the entire island gaslighting me, or was it just Benny and his friends? Heck, it could have been Stephanie doing this, trying to teach me a lesson.
I opened Discord to see if some of my students want to play some games, but none of them were online, at least not in the group chat I set up. Some of them changed their profile picture to a six-dot triangle, including Benny.
That evening, I went to a gas station to fill up my car. As I was just about finished, I saw a truck coming down a steep hill, heading straight into the station. It was an old truck, but an intimidatingly large one, and loud. Then, I saw the six-dot triangle symbol painted on the side of the truck.
Logically, I shouldn’t have panicked. The symbol was a symbol of the island’s folk hero and the gas station is brightly lit and full of people. But out of nowhere, this feeling of dread overwhelmed me. The hair on my arm just rose straight up. I felt chills as if something was telling me to get out of the gas station now. I trusted my instinct and quickly started my bike and bolted out of there.
The next day, I walked past a hallway where a colleague named Beth was putting up a poster made by her students. The poster was showcasing English words that came from French. For some reason, there were also photos of faculty members floating alongside words like “Garage”, “à la carte”, and “Cache”.
I stopped in my track when
I saw my photo with the word, ‘Foie Gras’ underneath it. That word and my picture seemed so out of place being in its own little corner on the poster. I almost had a panic attack right there. Another threat? Are you kidding me? I thought. Beth asked me what was wrong. I decided to tell her.
That evening, I went to have dinner with Beth and her husband Jan on the beach. Just three White expats talking. I told them about what I had been experiencing in the past few days. The three dotted symbols painted where I parked, the comment from the student made on the game chat, the mysterious T-shirt, the racial profiling, all of it.
“You are being very racist,” Beth said right at the very second I had just realized that I never really liked her.
She continued, “Don’t you get it, AJ? The students are threatening to eat your liver because they know you are a racist white man who thinks they were going to eat your liver. Kids will always try to exploit what they think the adults are afraid of. It’s your fault for showing them your cards.
Have you ever been outside of the States before? Do you not know how to be a minority? You came to an island paradise with so much special privilege but you suddenly have a male Karen racist nervous breakdown moment because you think that your teenage students are going to eat your liver? Quite frankly, I am very disappointed in you."
Her husband Jan tried to save the mood of the dinner. “So AJ, what are your plans for when the island shut off the power on July 7th?”
For one day every year, the island shut off all electricity for maintenance. Nothing electronic will work on that day, most importantly the ATM and the Internet. People, even the island natives, would go to the mainland for one day. There’s a problem with that idea. The ferry itself takes 3 hours to reach the mainland. And, with so many people thinking of doing the same thing, the line at the dock will be extremely long, both to the mainland in the morning, and back from the mainland in the evening.
For the last two years, I rode out the annual power outage by just chillaxing on the island. But this year, a Facebook post by Benny made me reconsider.
“I just want to say, my favorite teacher is AJ. He surely delivered. And soon I will de-liver him.”
Jan said that he and Beth will drive their speedboat to the mainland, which is 5 times faster than the ferry. They are also taking the rector with them. Judging from the way Beth glared at me, I don’t think she will say yes if I asked her if I could come too.
On the day of the power outage, I waited almost five hours in line to get my car onto the ferry. The ticket machine no longer works so everything was written on a notecard with pen and paper, which I found amusing. When the ticket man came to my car. He said to me that I have to wait for the next one. I looked at the ferry and it was not even half full. I asked him why and he pretended to suddenly not understand English.
I looked in my rearview mirror and then saw it, the truck with the six-dot triangle painted on its side only three cars behind me. How did it get there? I didn’t see it behind me before. I realized then that the truck wanted to get on the next ferry with me. I told the ticket holder that I will leave my car there and I will get on the leaving ferry with just me. Before he could say anything, I quickly maneuvered out of the line and parked in front of a cafe. The ticket boy said I couldn’t park there. I asked him if he owned the cafe, then quickly ran and jumped onto the suddenly departing Ferry.
After riding the ferry many times, I figured out that the top deck gave me the least motion sickness. I climbed up there and found a surprising person. Stephanie. She smiled at me, which made me so glad. I didn’t think what I did was something so bad that she would be holding a long grudge anyway. We made small talk, I asked her about what she was planning on doing for the day, etc. After a bit, I couldn’t help myself and showed her Benny’s Facebook post. I always thought she didn’t like Benny. I told her I was disappointed in him and was so shocked that he would threaten me like that.
I looked up at Stephanie and was shocked to see her eyes bulged out and her foot-long tongue dangling from her mouth. “Just like Voltaire, I may disagree with what Benny says, but I will defend to the death his right to say it." I was so scared, I backed away automatically. But, the teacher in me still corrected her and said that Voltaire didn’t say that. She laughed, “Good. Voltaire was a smart person. Only an idiot would say something like that.”
I moved down to the lowest level where the cars and the smoking passengers were. I tried not to fall asleep as I could feel the eyes of the other passengers staring at me.
The sound of people barfing almost made me want to barf myself. I went and sat on the edge of the front of the ferry. The wind blowing into my face did calm me a little. I was scared and frustrated. I wondered if I should just never go back to the island after reaching the mainland.
After looking at my watch and realizing that it had been three hours, I looked out the window and saw what made my soul leave my body.
We were heading to the island? I didn’t even realize we had turned around.
I asked the ferry driver what was going on. He said there was a storm coming and he has to head back. Besides, it was already close to 5 PM, and the power should be coming back on soon.
I was extremely angry that I was about to be back on the island. Stephanie was nowhere to be found on the ferry also. Since I was farsighted, I could see the tires of my car were slashed.
There were also a couple of men standing there doing nothing, blocking my path toward my car. There was no longer any doubt in my mind that the natives were planning to do something to me. I was targeted and was about to be beaten or killed for whatever reason.
I surprised them all by jumping from the ferry before it was properly docked and sprinting in the opposite direction of where my car was. I climbed up the steep hills next to the road leading to the dock and disappeared into the woods The light was not coming back on and it was getting dark.
I was shaking in fear but I had to calm myself so I could think of the next move with a clear head. I wondered if Beth and Jan came back from the mainland yet. I could ask them to use their boat or at least hide me, and if they say no, at this point, I was at a level of desperation where I was willing to just cause chaos until they let me. On my way to their house, I had to pass my dorm. I considered going to gather some of my things until I saw something moving in the dark.
I almost peed my pants from fright when I saw
a floating pair of eyeballs approaching my dorm. Despite everything else being in complete darkness, the eyes of a person and his dangling red tongue were glowing in the dark. I had never seen anything like this. Several more pairs of eyeballs and long red tongues emerged from the dark woods.
I couldn’t tell if the floating eyeballs and tongue belonged to Benny or any of my students, but they were right outside my dorm. As my eyes started to get used to the darkness and started to see shapes, I could see that they were each holding a machete. I quietly made my way to Beth and Jan’s house. When I got to their boathouse, there were flies everywhere. I tried to brush them away, but I could feel the thickness of the swarm. I felt like I was touching a bunch of floating chunks of meat.
I saw their boat at the dock. So did they come back? But why wouldn’t they turn on their boat’s light? I finally decided to use my phone flashlight to help me search for the boat key inside the boat house. I didn’t use my phone earlier because I was trying to conserve battery and also I didn’t want to draw attention to where I was. As soon as I shined the phone’s flashlight inside the boathouse, I was shocked to find the hacked-up heads of Beth, Jan, and the school’s rector covered in flies. Suddenly, I heard a wood creaking sound coming from outside. I quickly grabbed the boat key and jumped into the couple’s speed boat.
I hurriedly start the boat and just drove off, not caring about anything else. I used my phone’s compass to find the direction towards the mainland and I just kept going.
Suddenly, lights came back on the island. It shined brightly behind me as a nuclear bomb had just been detonated. I couldn’t help but look back, and then I saw it: a giant face formed by the neon lights, making the entire island look like it had a demonic face. The circular Ferris-wheel-like structure that was outside my dorm’s balcony was part of one of the giant face’s eyes.
I told myself to just ignore it and kept on driving. It was their world and they didn’t want me in it. I could do nothing but kept on going into the darkness.

2023.05.29 16:45 frenchynerd Buick LaCrosse 2012 - reliable?
Following a recent post I did where I was explaining my difficulties with modern car seats. Because of my scoliosis, all the bumps, humps, angles, they all poke me in the wrong spots, causing me pain, which is a safety issue as it makes me lose focus on my driving. I'm looking for plush traditional comfort with a seat that has an as low as possible number of humps, bumps, and angles.
I've come across a few ads for 2012 Buick LaCrosse which would be in my budget, including a rarer EAssist one.
From the pictures, the seats seem comfortable.
How is the reliability on those models? A lot of GM engines from those years seem to have issues.

2023.05.29 16:40 FoxtrotCharlie6 Miscommunication during insurance call.
Me and my friend are both mixed-race. I'm a 16 year old kid who was sitting in the passenger seat, and my friend is 18 with a drivers license. I speak Thai (not fluently) but as a 2nd language, but my friend speaks little to no Thai at all. He's got the 1st plan which supposedly covers all sorts of accidents or incidents. He was dropping me off at my neighborhood and keep in mind that my neighborhood is very run down, meaning that most houses are empty, abandoned, or do not have any sort of CCTV.
I barely had any sleep the night before so during the call with the agent my mind wasn't really thinking straight I sort of just blurted the information out. At one point during the call with the agent, I must've accidentally misinterpreted the question and told them that I was the driver. Currently, I feel that the agent is very suspicious that I'm the driver but in all honesty, I had a car accident ever since I was young and I don't ever really have plans of driving cars in the future. (I despise driving and cars, in my opinion they're just killing machines with wheels.) My friend's car doesn't have any dash-cam or anything so there isn't a sort of evidence other than my neighbor which saw the accident.
No one was hurt and the damage to the car was minimal. Looking at around maybe 10-13k THB. He was backing up the car when his foot slipped off the brake. And the 3rd party damage is basically nothing. A flower pot got destroyed but it belonged to an abandoned house so I don't think it counts. During the time with the agent, I was very nervous and since I was the only person which spoke Thai, I sort of explained everything, I think I was also blurting stuff out which might not be confirmed. Currently they are investigating the case by listening to the phone call but I'm not sure if I said that I was the driver in my own words. Like I said, I did not have any sleep for about 25 hours and I wasn't thinking straight. I was not the driver and I don't ever plan on driving a motor vehicle in the future other than my small motorcycle. Even if I did say I was the driver, would they be willing to listen to me and my situation with cars? Would they understand that I misinterpreted the question and that Thai is my 2nd language? It's hard enough being pressured by my parents to speak 4 different languages. Would it still be possible if they deny the insurance and could me and my friend sort of argue with them or show them more evidence? Would my friend's insurance be revoked or something? How far would they go to investigate?

2023.05.29 16:40 Far-Individual5863 No one ever talks about this part
Is/Was anyone else extremely overwhelmed with the financial aspect of loss?
It’s been almost 3 months and although mentally and physically I still feel like my head is barely bobbing above water, I am really trying to figure things out. I finally confronted my bills and it made things even worse to the point where I had a panic attack.
We were a dual income household and now i’m left to pay everything alone after depleting savings for the funeral. His parents and my parents helped me as much as they could but transparently they don’t necessarily make that much and I can’t ask for any more handouts.
This doesn’t even feel important truly but i’m so scared of losing more than I already have. I lost my best friend and the love of my life and the fact that I also have to worry about going to work to not have my car repoed sounds like insanity.
Family friend set up a go fund me which covered the unexpected costs that me and his family couldn’t but I missed 2 months of work unpaid and I truly don’t know if i’ll ever recover because I already felt like drowning and now I have this anchor of debt bringing me down with it.
Im only in my 20s, it wasn’t supposed to be like this … we were supposed to spend this summer having silly adventures but yet this is my reality.. Alone and suffering

2023.05.29 16:37 lordfartquadshunk I threw away my prednisone
I cried on the phone to both my insurance and doctor to get some kind of medication to make my flare go away, well. . . I was in a gas station in Georgia trying to get home five hours away, my phone wasn’t charging and I was freaking out over not having a gps. I quickly cleaned out my car at the gas station and now I can’t find the medication anywhere in my car, I don’t know what to do, I doubt insurance will cover another dose and I have leave for two weeks in two days. I’m super upset and stressed, any advice would help.
(p.s.) I hadn’t started taking them yet, so not in danger of withdrawals.

2023.05.29 16:34 solipsismcritic i jumped off a building yesterday
I’ve been thinking about suicide for a while, or for my entire life actually since I was 10 maybe. I never had the guts to do it though. I would always think to myself “what if tomorrow is a better day? what if a miracle happens tomorrow?” A miracle actually never happened and my life got progressively worse over the years. But I really thought I could be strong and withstand the pain but I just broke yesterday.
My parents and I were on day long road trip going home from my family house in the village which is a very traumatic place for me. The roads were deserted and gloomy at night so while my parents stopped at a gas station, for some reason, I just decided to take a walk far far away from them.
I crossed the wide street and went to a motel type place that was a bit far. I went inside and there was just a woman inside and asked me to be careful while walking outside in the dark. The motel had a nice antique decor so I wanted to explore and she allowed me to. I went through every hallway in all 7 floors which I’m pretty sure were completely empty. And there was a green light EXIT sign on the 7th floor that lead to a door. I expected that the door to the roof would be closed but somehow it wasn’t. I went out, felt the breath of the air on me and within a minute I decided to jump. In another minute I was to the edge of the roof at the back of the building so nobody would see what I’m doing and I saw desert sand staring right back at me when I stood over at the edge.
I thought to myself “there’s no way i will survive this fall, i should do this, im not gonna end up paralyzed” but to assure myself I searched up online on my phone whether jumping from a 7 story building on sandy rock type terrain would kill me and it seemed like it would.
I waited for a minute to think about my life. There was something that I had to deal with very soon that would result in my family hating me which could possibly ruin my life. I thought it wasn’t worth it to move on. I thought about how I should jump but I really didn’t know how someone should jump from a building.
I just decided that I would try to land on my head but I didn’t really know how to do that.
I don’t really know how to explain it but in a split second I just decided to jump. The fall was even faster too and I really didn’t have time to think to land on my head. The fall was fast when I remember it now but I think during the actual fall it was a lot slower as well. I landed on my legs and the rest of my body landed a second later and my survival instincts kicked in and I was covering my head for the impact. I blacked out for 1?2? seconds and when I opened my eyes, my entire body was throbbing. I knew I had broken my legs but I felt like the rest of my body was fine. I gripped my hand on the sand around me and realized how soft and deep they were, they must’ve softened the fall for me.
I sat for 5 minutes there and decided to kinda half walk half crawl back to the front of the building to the lady in the help desk. She asked me how I fell and that she heard a loud thud but I just told her that I tripped really badly on the stairs but she didn’t believe me since I came in from outside and she kept on asking questions but I ignored her and moaned in pain instead. She called the people in the gas station and my parents came and my dad carried me to my car and he drove to the nearest hospital 1 and a half hours away.
I immediately slept on the hospital bed. They did some tests on me and said that both my legs were broken but nothing unfixable. I’m doing a short surgery today to fix something in my right leg. The doctors didn’t question my story but my parents who are doctors as well said that my story made no sense.
I’m tired of lying.
I feel a deep sense of shame for what I did. I don’t know why. I don’t think suicide can ever be the answer. It felt terrible. I feel bad. I disappointed my parents and most importantly, I wronged myself. How can I be mad at other people for what they do to me when I’m the biggest villain in my life? I know about all the struggles I have had to deal with in my life, I know about all the kind words and actions I have done for other people and I know all about the hopes and dreams and aspirations little me had and yet I still decided to brutally jump off a building.
I don’t know. Life isn’t that deep. I should just live one day at a time. I should be happy and try to see what life has in store for me. I never thought that I would see myself jumping off such a tall building and surviving but life has many surprises. I’m happy I survived and I’m happy that I got a second chance to die more peacefully in a less self hating way that would better honor my life.
I’m very happy now even though my parents are very stressed and worried now and my hospital room has no AC. My parents are praying and are deadly worried over some small surgery. I don’t really care though, how could anything hurt someone who survived a 7 story fall?
I know suicidal thoughts and depression can’t be simply fixed by reading a Reddit post but I hope you guys can see how suicide is the cruelest thing you can you do to someone and especially yourself.
I used to always browse this sub on the website but im very happy I wrote my first post here to say my thoughts even though I hope this will be my last post here.
Thank you for reading my mentally ill rambles on the aftermath of what happens when you decided to jump off a building in 5 minutes. I’m always open to messages from anyone who needs help. I’d really like it if people learned from my mistake.

2023.05.29 16:32 RakimWebster MIAMI ROLLING LOUD TIPS & THINGS TO KNOW
This will be my 5th Rolling Loud (3 in NYC, 2 in Miami). I’m 28 years old and frequently go alone. I always see people asking questions about this festival before going so hopefully my prior experience can help answer those questions:
1) Set lower expectations. I go to Rolling Loud simply for the artists and being able to rage and mosh with other fans. A lot of people leave this festival upset because of shitty security, long lines, a lot of people, some rude people (mainly teenagers), pick pocketers, artists cancelling/arriving late. Basically, I think rolling loud is a shitty festival but it’s the only place you get to see mainstream artists and new artists for a fairly cheap price. For that reason, it’s worth it.
2) I’m traveling from NY. Travel tips: Get an Airbnb close to a shuttle pick up locations. Buy the shuttle pass and take the shuttle to and from the concert. It’s worth it. You can’t rely on Uber or other car services given the high volume of people who will also be looking for an Uber. Plus, prices will be jacked up. Shuttle is convenient and worth it
3) Bring clear bags. It is their policy. Don’t risk bringing non clear bags and getting it taken.
4) security is different when entering the festival. You might get lenient security or you might not. I got my doob tube taken away last year by security. Hide your drugs just in case.
5) Essential items you may want to bring with you: phone, phone charger, empty plastic water bottle (to fill up at water stations), ID, debit/credit card (maybe some cash too, but I wouldn’t bring your whole wallet)
6) Non essential items: weed, lighter, towel (it will be sweaty), cooling rag, sunglasses, COVID mask (I got COVID last year after RL), shorts with zippers, clear bag to hold your things
7) Always be aware and alert. It kinda sucks but if your bringing valuable shit, always have your hands on it/know exactly where it is. You don’t want to lose anything.
8) if you’re nervous about the crowds, then don’t get close the the stage, the closer you get the stage, the more jam packed you get. Hang out in the back and you’ll be fine.
9) There will be 4 stages. You might have a dilemma with wanting to see 2 different artists on 2 different stages that perform at the same time.
10) Please be fucking respectful. You can rage and go nuts and ballistic, while also being considerate of others and helping those around you. If someone falls, help them up. We’re all here to have a good time.
I think that covers most of it. If you have any questions, I’ll do my best to answer or hopefully another redditor can answer. If someone wants to add to this list, please comment. Hope this helps some of y’all. Gang.

2023.05.29 16:31 SleeplessFromSundown The Séance Club - The End of Windhaven Manor [Final]
This post is the final part of this story. Sorry it has taken so long to get through. And I'm not sure I even understand all of it yet. If you're new, this all started
here. The previous part (Part 7) is
here. Thank you to everyone who followed along.
-----
“Do you see her?” I asked in a meek voice.
“You mean that girl in black?” Harvey answered.
It was her, in the flesh. Her lips parted and formed a malevolent smile. Her dark eyes fixed on mine. My legs turned to solid lead. My feet refused to move. The anxiousness to reach Parker and Juliet and Beth in the cellar crumbled like the wood turning to ash behind us. She demanded my attention.
A hand rocked my shoulder. Harvey. I pushed him away.
“You have to go. Help them. I’ll take care of her.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll be right behind you.”
A mirage of Harvey flitted past Ally and disappeared into the kitchen. Everything blurred, everything but her.
She tilted her head to one side and bridged the gap between us with four slow and deliberate steps. She pushed her right hand out from a long sleeve and ran the black painted nail of her index finger across my cheek, the smooth lacquer cold against my skin. I shuddered as the chill spread like ice creeping up a window.
“It is such a shame to be losing you so soon. We’ve only just met, and yet I feel like we’ve known each other our whole lives. Do you feel it too?”
I shook my head. “Let me go.”
“We’re past that now Sam. I considered if we could coexist, you and I. It gave me a thrill knowing there is another one out there like me. But you insist on meddling with my work.”
“You mean locking all those girls in that filthy dungeon where they met their end? And Jane here.”
“The work is sometimes unpleasant.”
“But the pay is good?”
“This isn’t about money Sam. You and I are the same. The pain you felt from not fitting in. The lonely nights lying awake, wishing you could be like everyone else. The stares and the whispers. The rejection from those who are supposed to love us the most. I too know. But where you hid, I searched out a path where my talents were appreciated and rewarded. You don’t hate me Sam. You hate yourself for not thriving like I have.”
“Thriving? Is that what you call it?”
“By all measures yes. I am good at what I do. The best. The only. Or so I thought. And then there is you. A naïve, sheltered little boy who can barely put on his own pants in the morning. It is such a shame. And these so-called friends of yours, that was always doomed to failure. Oh and if you harbour any thoughts of them escaping, know that we blocked the little secret entrance the stable boy showed you. There’s no escape except through the fire. When they pick through the ashes of this building they will find their bones, and yours. Is this how you imagined it turning out?”
I flexed the muscles in my legs, but they refused to move. Ally smiled.
“It’s useless now Sam.”
I heard the faint whisper of Juliet’s voice in my head. She pleaded with me. Come on Sam, you can do this. I remembered the last encounter with Ally, outside the wall separating Windhaven Manor from the world. Ally had put me in the white room. I had broken free. I had overcome her power once. I had to do it again.
I took a deep breath in through my nose and cried out and willed my feet to move. Electricity coursed through my body and I directed it down to the floor. My left heel separated from the floor and that set the whole thing in motion. The dam burst. I lurched forwards and overbalanced and sprawled to the floor.
Ally crouched beside me and chuckled. “Some would call it a tragedy for a child to die so soon after learning to walk.”
I looked back towards the front of the house. The fire burned hot. Thick black smoke circled up the huge open space of the gallery. Portraits hanging on the wall bubbled and curled as flames consumed them.
A figure appeared at the foot of the staircase. The spectre of Crown. The goons had dragged his lifeless corpse out of the house, but stood before me was the spirit with unfinished business. The ugliness of his actions showed through now in death. His skin was sallow and wrinkled. His head too big for his body and his teeth yellowed. A grotesque monster made worse by his mortal demise.
Ally whispered in my ear. “He knows it was your meddling that brought about his end. I’ll leave you two alone.”
She brushed my cheek with the back of her hand and stood. As she walked away leather straps materialised out of thin air and pinned my body to the floor.
The spectre of Crown grew before me, swelling in size until he had to crouch to stay below the chandelier. He clenched his fists and with burning red eyes let out a guttural growl that skipped my ears and penetrated directly into my skull.
I tried to pull my hands to my ears but they would not come. It made no difference. The roar coming from Crown stabbed the inside of my head like a thousand daggers. I lifted my head and the growl grew to a scream that ricocheted around the inside of my skull. I couldn’t take much more. It felt as though my head would explode.
Guilt bubbled up and mingled with the fear and I shrank into the floor and wished for it to swallow me. They were down there, the only friends I had known, banging against a locked door denying their escape. I sobbed. I sobbed like I had the night my parents turned from me.
In the pit of my stomach something else grew. A seed of frustration born of a lifetime existing in a world that didn’t make sense. A world where I had no idea who I was and what I could or should do. A world in which I hid. I couldn’t do that now.
Juliet’s voice as clear as day, cutting through the racket of Crown’s scream. Do it Sam. I gritted my teeth and electricity buzzed somewhere deep inside, at first dull and imperceptible, and then amplified and resonating until it peaked into a deafening roar.
Above Crown the bulbs in the chandelier glowed white. He swivelled his head and watched them dumbly.
I concentrated, felt the energy forming an extra limb. Like the arms and legs of a newborn it flailed spasmodically. I fought to control it, to turn it to my will. I focussed on the straps pinning me to the floor. The electricity fed into the straps and turned them hot. For a moment I feared they would scold my skin, and then in a moment of release they split and flung upwards.
I picked myself up off the floor and faced the spectre of Crown. Like a spent boxer throwing one final punch I threw out my hands and screamed, willing Crown to be quiet and be still. Demanding he be so.
The floor shook. The dozens of bulbs in the chandelier shattered. The giant spectre of Crown diminished and the screaming inside my head softened until it was no more. Crown’s eyes opened wide as his mouth stitched together and his arms wrenched behind his back. I flicked my hand like I was swatting a fly and Crown flew into the corner of the room and slumped to the floor.
I bent over and rested my hands on my knees. My muscles ached, like I had run a marathon. Shadows played on the floor. I sucked in air and smoke and spluttered and coughed.
In the hallway the silhouette of Ally. She turned and shook her head. The heat of the fire intensified and crackled at my skin. If we were to make our escape, she could not be here to block us. I straightened and strode towards her.
I cycled furiously through the events of the last few days, searching for something to defeat Ally. I had to do to her what she had done to me. The time for running and breaking her spells was through.
I closed my eyes and concentrated. I stripped away everything except for the two of us. The crackle of the fire replaced with silence. The smell of the smoke disappeared. The heat washed away. One by one I shut down all my senses. When I opened my eyes a monotone room of white. Sterile calm had replaced the burning insides of Windhaven Manor.
Her eyes scanned the room and she giggled. “Cheap tricks won’t get you far,” she said. “And you learned this one from me.”
The white rippled as if the walls were made of water. She was fighting it. I concentrated, focussing all my energy, all my will. The ripples slowed and then stopped.
“You’re a fast learner,” she said. “But I have been doing this for more than a weekend.”
Strips of colour permeated the white. A rectangle of tile appeared on the floor. And then some blue from the curtain. Enough of a smouldering wall to let in some smoke. The acrid smell reached my nose and I spluttered. As each wedge of colour appeared, I filled it back in white. But it was a sinking ship and the pail I held to bail out the water would not be enough.
Ally grunted under her breath. A grunt of frustration. The white room shook and made a sound like a train bearing down.
I had to bind her. I raised my palm and coils of rope rose from the ground and oscillated like snakes around her. She swatted them away and wrenched them from the ground and flung them at my feet, limp and unmoving.
“It won’t be that easy,” she sneered.
My arms jerked behind my back. She bound my wrists and then my ankles. She pursed her lips and blew as if extinguishing a single candle on a birthday cake, and it was enough to send me to the floor. I couldn’t do this on my own. I needed help.
I shut my eyes and concentrated my energy not on my bindings, but on the woods at the back of Windhaven Manor. On the girls who escaped the dungeon and now roamed the forest, watching the house burn from behind the barrier Ally constructed.
I fed the energy coursing through my body into the giant snowdome structure until it burned hot and then like the globes in the chandelier, it cracked and exploded into the night sky. The spirits of the girls watched the shards disappear and then strode towards the Manor.
I turned my attention to the tiny room beside the pantry, where Jane Laughlin lay bound to the bed. I stood beside her and lay my hand on the shackles binding her to the bed. She shuddered as the mask came free from her mouth and then stood as the shackles broke.
I opened my eyes and the white of the room flickered off and then back on again like bad reception on a television. I had to keep the white walls up long enough for them to draw near. For them to be ready when the façade fell. Ally strode towards me, exuding confidence.
“You can’t beat me Sam.”
Ally squeezed her hands into fists and screamed. In a burst of energy she wiped the white room clear and we were back in the burning house. The air was thick with smoke. Behind me a timber beam tumbled from the ceiling and crashed to the floor. The heat and smoke sucked the moisture from my insides and I heaved out a series of coughs.
Ally opened her eyes and smiled. She had bested me. But then they came. The girls from the dungeon and Jane Laughlin surrounded her. The sum total off all the pain and hurt inflicted in this place. Everything Ally had worked to keep hidden from the world.
They lurched at Ally. She raised her hands and pushed them back one by one as they went for her. She spun on the spot, trying to keep them at bay. She could not hold them all back. The sheer weight of numbers overwhelmed. They leaned in and pushed their heads into hers and showed her what those men had done. Made her feel it. The fear and despair and anger of each individual stacked together and Ally crumpled to the floor holding her head.
“Make it stop,” she said.
They kept at her.
Jane Laughlin sidled over to the base of the stairs where Crown sat, bound and with his mouth stitched. She considered him, restrained and helpless on the floor as she had been. He fought with his restraints, and then whimpered, as she had. As I ran for the pantry and the wine cellar, the corridor filled with the muffled sound of his screams.
The door to the cellar stood open and I made the descent of the stairs in three leaps. The enclosed space already full with smoke. At the end of the long corridor leading outside, Parker and Harvey shouldered the door. Juliet and Beth screamed encouragement. The door would not budge.
“We can’t go that way,” I yelled.
They raced back up the long corridor. A sudden rush of emotion bubbled up to the surface. I was so happy to see them all still alive. My lower jaw rattled and my hands shook. I fought to hide it.
Beth reached me first. “Sam, you’re ok.”
I blubbered a response and took in a lung full of smoke. We had to get out.
The fire raged outside the kitchen door. A wave of flame climbed up and spread across the ceiling. A subtle cracking sound from above intensified and a chunk of the upstairs floor came crashing down through the ceiling, blocking the rear door. We couldn’t get out the back. The only way now was back through the house. A ball of flame whooshed through the doorway and I put my arm up too late, my eyebrows wilting in the heat.
We crouched together in the middle of the kitchen, lowering our heads to get the last of the remaining oxygen. Malicious red flames and choking black smoke surrounded us on all sides.
“Where do we go now?” Parker’s words came out between coughs. Tears streaked down his cheeks. Soot covered his brow. I wished I had an answer.
Then he was there, standing over Parker’s shoulder. Leon. With the protective bubble gone, he too was free to come in the Manor.
“The fire has not yet consumed the dining room. But you don’t have long.”
I looked vaguely in the direction of the kitchen door and blinked back the stinging from the smoke. “I don’t think we can find it in this.”
“Follow me.”
I pulled my shirt up over my head. “We have to go. The dining room, we can make it. All together on three.”
I shouted out the numbers, the sound drowned out by the roar of the fire. I grabbed Beth’s hand and yanked her into action. Leon led the way and I kept my eyes on his heels. Together we were a flurry of arms and legs bounding for the dining room. I gritted my teeth against the heat. We burst through the doorway and everything turned orange.
From below the sweater pulled tight down over my hair, I shot a glance over to the floor of the grand gallery where I had left Ally writhing on the floor. She was not there now. Nor were the spectres of the girls.
I followed Leon’s heels into the dining room. The great wooden table smouldered in the centre of the room. Brilliant orange flames consumed the thick curtains. Parker spotted his camera still atop the tripod and set to pulling the camera free before Harvey grabbed his arm and yelled something that sounded like ‘leave it’.
Harvey grabbed one of the heavy chairs with their high backs and velvet cushions and heaved it at the window in the back corner of the room. The chair disappeared into the darkness of the night and Harvey kicked at the glass shards left behind. Parker joined. We piled out the opening.
I drank in the fresh cool air of night, staggering over the narrow path beside the house and to the small strip of grass beyond. Parker collapsed beside me and pulled the laptop out from under his shirt. He tapped at the casing and for a moment a brief smile flashed across his face, but it did not last long. He wiped soot and sweat from his face with shaking hands.
Harvey checked us all in turn, like a parent fussing over their children. We had scrapes and bruises and our skin was red and raw, but we were alright. We had survived. He ran to the front of the house and came back with palms held out by his sides. The man in the black suit, the goons Ponytail and Beanie, and Ally were all gone, along with the black van and the BMW.
Huddled together, we watched the fire consume Windhaven Manor, bright reds and oranges lighting up the windows and thick black smoke tumbling into the purple haze of sky. It was almost morning, the horizon signalling the coming of the sun.
Leon stood apart on the grass. I went to him.
“Thank you for coming back for us.”
He shrugged. “It’s something. It isn’t enough to make up for the rest.”
“You saved our lives. And those girls, they had their chance to meet their tormentors. That’s something too.”
He nodded. “What happens now?”
I turned my head sideways. “I’m still learning how all this works.”
The red of the fire reflected in his eyes. “Me too. I might go for a walk in the woods. I always liked it out there.”
He glided across the lawn and entered the trees and was gone.
The sound of sirens fought with the crackle of the fire. The fire brigade and the police. I got to my feet and shuffled to the front of the Manor. The burnt out carcasses of our cars stood by the low height wall. Black soot smudged the stone façade above the windows and the doors.
By the oak tree on the ocean side of the house stood Jane Laughlin. She peered down into a hole dug at the base of the tree. A pale and withered hand poked up out of the dirt. Her hand. They had meant to remove the body, but had aborted the task and fled.
A fire truck appeared at the head of the driveway and then another. They sped down the gravel and came to a sliding stop. A lone police car followed. Harvey sidled over.
Jane looked to the horizon. Out on the cliff edge stood a figure in a red dress. She recognised her sister Kylie immediately and ran down the slope. The two sisters embraced in the first light of the sun. I turned to the whoosh of water through a hose from the fire trucks and when I turned back, the Laughlin sisters were gone.
The members of The Séance Club, which I now consider myself a part, sat together on the low-height stone wall as the firefighters extinguished the flames consuming Windhaven Manor. The house was quiet now. The nausea and vibration I had felt that first night replaced with calm.
The police stripped the compound clean for the best part of a week. They identified Kyle the sketch artist and Hugo from the teeth that survived the fire of the hovel built over the dungeon. Hugo’s wife lay on the back lawn where Beanie and Ponytail had left her. But as to specific evidence of the crimes that occurred, they could not find enough to put a case together.
The two fires and the disappearance of Crown made some headlines, but there wasn’t enough to hang anyone else. The police claimed publicly that there was no link between the fire at Windhaven Manor and the fire at the squalid residence over the back fence. At Harvey’s behest they searched the area with cadaver dogs for the remains of the girls, but they found nothing.
Parker turned his laptop over to the police. They identified the two goons, Ponytail and Beanie, low level thugs who had disappeared from the streets years earlier. Those in the know presumed them dead. It made tracing them almost impossible. Tracing their vehicles lead to a dead end.
The man in black the suit on the other hand might as well be a ghost. On him they found nothing. They have a face, but nothing else.
As for Ally, the girl somehow managed to always turn her face away from the cameras, as if she knew where they were.
I sat in a small room at the police station for three days with Harvey putting the pieces together. He showed me a photograph of an old and gaunt man with a bent back, the last owner of Windhaven Manor before it was sold after his death. He had to be the man with the bent back from the ceremony in the dungeon, but I could not be certain. I never saw his face. Of the faces I did see, we knew Crown and Kyle and Hugo, but the others were harder to pinpoint.
At the end of it all Harvey sighed. There was nothing more we could do. But we could rest on the knowledge that the key players in the ceremony were all now dead.
Questions nagged at me. Where was Ally and what was she doing? Would she try to find me? Who was she working for?
That was the biggest question of all. Who was at the top and pulling the strings? Harvey wasn’t giving up. He was a dog with a bone at the best of times, and now he had a taste of blood. He refused to go back to the police even after Crown’s departure, which he described as the removal of a cancerous limb.
Harvey called me after the dust settled on everything. I told him that the trail had gone cold and I had no idea where Ally was. For all I knew she had evaporated into thin air. Harvey thought it unlikely, and I agreed. He told me it was time for some old-fashioned detective work. The names of the goons would be a start.
And there was something else Harvey mentioned, something that I had almost forgotten. He had always believed that his investigation into the disappearance of the girls was the reason one of his colleagues was murdered. Crown confirmed as much in the bedroom right before he was shot. Harvey thinks there is something to it. Another thread to pull, and he has a hunch. For now he’s keeping his cards close to his chest until he has some proof. I almost pressed him on the issue but decided I’d rather put it all behind me.
The story made headlines in the local press for a while, but ultimately it fizzled into a non-story, quickly forgotten by a public with a short attention spans. We all waited for a reckoning from within the police ranks, but it never came. Harvey predicted that’s the way it would go, and he was proven right.
The one item they did recover was a gold necklace with a heart pendant. The necklace Jane Laughlin wore the night of her death. The police found it where the black van had parked. After a few days in the possession of the police, Harvey arranged to have the necklace released to the family of its former owner.
The following day Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin appeared on the local news, thanking the efforts of those who recovered the remains of their daughter. It was closure, though not the kind they had hoped for. Both their girls were dead.
A week later The Séance Club convened in Beth’s apartment. Parker and Juliet were already there when I arrived. It was cathartic to talk about the events at Windhaven Manor, to compare stories and scars. I guess that’s why they have the saying about a problem shared.
After a brief silence, Beth asked, “Are you going to talk to the parents of Jane and Kylie?”
I shook my head. “What will I tell them?”
“That their daughters found each other out by the cliff edge.”
“And what about the agony of their deaths? Should I tell them that too? Besides, it doesn’t feel right. None of this feels right to me yet. And what weight do my words hold over those of some Priest talking about how he knows their souls are at rest.”
“Because you really do know.”
I shrugged. “I can’t prove any of it.”
Truth was I had no idea how to integrate the things I could see and do into my life. From childhood all I had wanted was to be like everyone else. For people not to stare or whisper as I walked by. To find acceptance. Sitting with my three new friends at Beth’s tiny kitchen table, with our shared experience behind us, I finally had it. This could be the start of something.
Parker was already planning the next Séance Club trip. An abandoned farm up north with mysterious sightings going back centuries. Juliet was already on board. I told them to wait. I couldn’t jump back in right away.
I was the last to leave, Beth and I sipping mug after mug of coffee and sharing comfortable silence. When I sighed and told her I should go, she grabbed my arm.
“I’ve never had a real family, and then I found Juliet and Parker. The Séance Club became my family. Whatever happens we are there for each other. And we mean it when we say we want you to join.”
I thought about that all night, unable to sleep.
The next morning I called Parker.
An abandoned farm up north you say?
* * * *
I navigated to the narrow alley and checked the time. The Exchange should be open. It looked out of context in the Saturday morning light. No bright light spilling from the window. No surge of Friday night after work traffic.
I slipped in the front door. A lone man lifted upturned stools down from the bar. He had his back to me and I crept across the hardwood floor in the direction of the stairs down and the bathrooms.
The vibration swelled in my chest, but I did not fear it. A dull pain rose in the base of my skull, but I gritted my teeth. A man wearing a pair of rough leather shoes came from the other end of the corridor and stopped before me.
“Are you here to help?”
I nodded.
