2023.05.28 03:55 disenchantedgrl What's the best job title for my volunteer work?

So I'm currently volunteering my GIS skills for a non-profit (nobody else is getting paid so there's that).
I'm not sure what job title I should put on my resume.
I'm currently researching census information and creating shapefiles to use. Sometimes I find the shapefiles from the county or state, when that happens I'm just doing data cleanning and "quality assurance." Sometimes that means writing emails to ask questions to make sure the data is correct. I also do some spatial analysis as we are looking for potential sites for our work.
Lastly, I also write reports and presentations to the team, so I interact with people not familiar with GIS.
What position does that put me in? Is that more of a GIS Analyst or Technician.
ETA: would saying GIS consultant work?

2023.05.25 23:32 matchamapper GIS Parcel Technician: $24.58 to $33.88 per hour

Great Entry Level Job Opportunity as a GIS Parcel Technician for Scott County, IA.
$24.58 to $33.88 per hour
This is a great opportunity for those who are entry level or just want something very consistent.
It is not remote and does not have the option to be remote. The office is very calm and an easy going work environment. They will train on how to use the plat books and how to work with deed transfers so if you are new to the GIS work force don't be intimidated to apply! Those tasks only need to be done on occasion as back up to the Plat Room Clerk. This is a position that requires you to answer phones and work with the public so I recommend only applying if you are okay with doing those things. :)

2023.05.25 18:50 greyjedimaster77 Any entry-level remote GIS opportunities in the US?

Besides looking for a traditional in-office GIS job, I’m also considering remote ones as well. I usually see a few openings on Indeed and LinkedIn which I applied to about several but sadly never got contacted from any of them. I always make sure beforehand that I’m fully eligible to apply especially qualifications and residing within the job location. Some remote GIS jobs require you to live within the city or county or state depending on what the company is asking. I’ve seen a few that don’t mind where you live in the US even if its across the whole country.
If you or your company is hiring remote GIS people, I’d be glad to apply as long as its entry level and I can meet the qualifications so I would like to hear from you!

2023.05.24 18:04 Oakleypokely Tips getting first Planning job with the City/County?

A couple months ago I graduated with my degree in Urban Planning and a minor in Sustainability. I also did a lot of coursework in GIS so I have some skills there as well but not advanced yet.
I live in a small city currently with a population around 200,000 people (my husband is in the military and we are stuck living her for the next 2-3 years). Obviously the goal is to move to a larger city when our time here is up but for the meantime I am looking for a job to get my first initial experience in the field.
It’s been tough because there aren’t many job openings for the city I live in. I interviewed earlier this year for a city planner and environmental planner position for a small outlying city and didn’t get either job because they only have 1 other planner and whoever they hired would have been placed on the commission and had more experience. There are no Planner 1, 2, 3 etc, levels here since the city is too small.
I also applied for a couple GIS jobs and I interviewed for one at a utility company and did not get it due to lack of experience and GIS knowledge (even though the application stated you only need basis GIS skills which I have).
Anyway, I noticed a neighboring county is hiring for a Planning Associate and Planning Technician 1. Neither position even requires a Bachelors degree but the Associate Planner prefers it. My application has been recommended to the hiring manager and now I’m waiting. Any steps I should take? Should I call them? If so, what should I say when I do?

2023.05.23 20:11 ThrowawayNC1313 Speeding ticket

As the title suggests, I got a speeding ticket recently. I was going 21 over, 66 in a 45 I think. And in Buncombe county (Asheville) if that makes any difference or helps. I've gotten speeding tickets before in other states, and you just pay it and move on with your life. For some reason I can't pay it in NC, I have to go to court???? For context, there was no car wreck, no damage, no drinking, no extenuating circumstances. Just a simple speeding ticket. And now I am getting mail from law offices!?!? Asking me to hire them to represent me in court??? WTH is all this about? Should I hire a lawyer or just go to court and tell the judge "Sorry your honor, I haven't had a ticket in around 5-6 years, please have some leniency." I realize we aren't supposed to give or take legal advice on Reddit, but some tips or pointers would be helpful. Thanks!

2023.05.23 06:57 Ordinary-Entrance-20 Best way to buy unlisted land

I’m looking for the best way to go about buying land near my families lakehouse to build a barndominium on & store cars, bikes, boat, and other offroad toys.
There are plenty of people throwing up barns to do the same across the street from the lake. But not entirely sure on the best approach to buy unlisted parcels of land that are just sitting and doing nothing.
I can pull up owner info with GIS and county tax records. But just not entirely sure what to do with the info without being annoying/pushy. Hire a broker? Reach out myself and explain the connection i have to the land? Or are there any direct mailer services that can send out to all these people asking to buy their land?

2023.05.23 05:10 TheMouthSpeaks What to do when you suspect a seller is not disclosing something during a bidding war?

My partner and I are putting in an offer on a property in California and there is a bidding war going on. Even before we made an offer, we noticed on the county assessor's GIS (satellite imagery / lot line information) that there appears to be an encroachment on the seller's part onto a neighboring landowner's parcel.
(Sorry but I am being intentionally vague as this case is currently "live")
On the offer contract, the seller did not disclose any encroachment, and when we asked if a survey had ever been done, they are unaware of one. I am 99.9% that an encroachment is occurring, and that would be devastating to either the seller or the future buyer if the offended neighboring parcel owner were to evoke their rights (again, vague I know, but for sake of argument just assume I'm right on this part when giving your advice).
My partner and I have added to our offer that we want the seller to pay for a survey to be done. We've told them if the survey comes back fine, we'll reimburse them for the survey costs at closing.
I can easily imagine the seller would NEVER choose our offer, because I suspect they know of this issue and once a survey is done they won't be able to pretend they don't know about the encroachment. It's better for them to take the next best offer (assuming ours was the best) and move on. Yes, this is a bleak outlook on the selling party, but.. it's human nature and probably true about them.
Is there some way I can tell the other parties what might be going on? Or somehow force them to address the issue (with all parties)? Sure, I selfishly still want the property but then at least we're all bidding on a fair playing field if we all know of the potential issue. But I also don't want some poor sap to buy this and get screwed (if it's an issue). Do we have any options here? I don't know it's an issue, but the only way to know for sure is to get a survey done, and I don't think (especially with a bidding war going on) that the seller has any motivation to choose our offer that requires one. It seems unfair for our offer to be rejected because we're asking some questions they'd rather not think of. Thanks in advance.

2023.05.19 07:34 gabesmith63 Web scraping ArcGIS Map Scene

I have some data layers compiled into an ArcGIS Map Scene and I have some saved searches for particular criteria amongst 6-7 real estate websites. I am trying to utilize webscraping to make the ArcGIS areas of interest into a table format so I can easily check the properties against the criteria.
Any suggestions on how I can grab the info from the ArcGIS map and make it into a table? An example of how I want the data to come out in columns would be:

What I am trying to do is to have create a list of unique TAZs from the data already selected and iterate over that list and subselect all the rows that have that taz then check if they have the

2023.05.17 05:08 webtechnick Smallest project needed for building permit

I have a small cinder block building on a pad that I am working on renovating. I will be moving into it as it's 45 minutes away right now so I can only work on it weekends. In order to move there and receive mail I have to get a registered address with the e911 service. I've been informed by the county and GIS that the quickest way to get a registered address is by submitting a building permit for a project. Question 1.. is this true? Question 2.. what's the most inexpensive project that would require a permit other than the porch I'm planning on later. County: Pittsylvania (Virginia)

2023.05.17 03:13 BobThompso Help an old dog out?

I've got a copy of QGIS on my computer and access to the tutorials, but after a few hours of poking around both of them, I still have no clue how to use it. And at my age, with my inclinations, (rebuilding an old roadside motel, planning a major horse fence for my lady, a micro hydro plant for the heck of it and some sanitary considerations for the local government) I don't think I'd ever really use it more than once for a real project. All I really want is a .DXF of the contour lines in 2' increments of the terrain between 86 -43-48 and 86-45-24 (deg-min-sec) West and 39-18-54 and 39-19-39 North. For most of the counties around here that data is provided on the county gis site, but not this county. I don't mind paying for the data, but the quotes I got from a couple of engineering firms made me think they weren't really interested in generating it for me from the lidar data our tax dollars have already payed to collect. I'm just using it for planning purposes and I know for some of the things I'm planning I'll eventually need an engineers stamp, but not now. If anyone wants to generate this DXF file for me for a reasonable rate or knows of some organization that would do so, please let me know. Thanks!

2023.05.16 22:34 brianomars1123 Please help advise on the tools I can use for this analysis.

I'm not 100% good with ArcGIS Pro so I need help with this.
I have 4 polygon feature classes:
  1. Feature class of all the counties in 4 states (AL, GA, MS, FL). Would call this data A
  2. Feature class of physiographic regions - coastal, piedmont, blue ridge, etc. Would call this data B
  3. Feature class of forest type groups in those states. Each forest structure/stand is assigned a type by FIA. Would call this data C
  4. Feature class of forest land ownership in those states. Whether the forest is owned by FG, state, families, etc. Would call this data D
Now I first want to find out what the most common forest type and land ownership is in each county. So I want to use A to break B, C, and D into segments (counties). Then in each of the counties in C and D, find the most common occurrence of forest type and land ownership.
After doing this, I'd have B, C, and D broken down into counties. I then want to sort of merge all 3 into a new dataset such that each county would have a label of what the physiographic region, common forest type, and common land ownership are. For instance, the map should show that lee county in Alabama has mostly Longleaf/Slash pine forest type, has mostly federal forests, and is in the coastal region. For another county, it should show that it has Loblolly/shortleaf pine forest type, has mostly family-owned forests, and is in the Piedmont area, etc.
I'm going through youtube trying to come up with a methodology for this but decided to post here too. I'd appreciate any help.

2023.05.16 18:35 goshawkgirl Resolved: Abducted girl who was featured on Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries, found safe in Asheville

From the article: “The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) announced Monday, a girl who had been missing from Illinois since 2017 and was featured on the Netflix Unsolved Mysteries reboot, has been found in Asheville.
Heather E. Unbehaun, 40, was taken into custody on May 13 on Westgate Parkway.
NCMEC says Kayla Unbehaun was 9 years old when she was abducted by her non-custodial mother, Heather from South Elgin, Illinois on July 5, 2017.
The Asheville Police Department tells News 13 that the girl was spotted on Saturday, May 13, at a business in the Westgate Parkway area just before 7:30 p.m. An employee at the store recognized the missing child from a "well-publicized media" and contacted the police.
After further investigation, officers confirmed this was the missing child. The abductor, Heather Unbehaun, was arrested and booked into the Buncombe County Jail.”
Apparently a store employee recognized her and alerted the authorities. So glad that this has ended with her safely back home! I can’t imagine what an adjustment this will be for her, six years later.
